Kiriona is legit just how someone speaking te reo Māori would pronounce “Gideon”. You roll the R a little bit and it should sound a lot more like “Kee-dee-oh-nah” sorry idk how to properly write out phonetics but you get it

Here’s another way to think of it: a prominent Māori woman named Kiritapu has talked about how her grandmother, of the same name, was called “Kitty” by Pākehā because “Kiri” (reo Māori pronunciation) sounded more or less the same to them.

I remember asking about this when I read Nona. And @necarion told me that "Kiriona" is how they render "Gideon" in Māori translations of the Bible.

and i can help with explaining the pronunciation; a slightly rolled "r" is essentially the same as the sound english speakers make for the "tt" in butter!
