I'm Cinnia, late 20s, she/her, a fan of the health sciences and many other things, and a former quiet kid who was abducted by the theater people. This blog is a semi-queued experiment to vent my endless energy for fandoms, LGBT+ content, writing, languages, religion analysis and ExMormon content, dancing, mental health, etc. I also run the Grate Scoff food blog as well as the Incorrect Rings of Power and Incorrect Thornfruit Quotes blogs.

not to enforce gender roles but a computer should NOT fucking have apps okay. if I wanted an app I'd go on my phone my laptop is for Programs. I mean this.

really glad to see hate for this concept.

count me among the haters. i've been a hater since i first encountered this conflation of many different well-defined concepts into one ill-defined one

it's part of the general trend of hiding the inner workings of computers from the user, which is something i hate since it tends to promote computer illiteracy which tends to promote incompetence and dysfunction in society as a whole

I don't know who needs to hear this but please please please please please explore the settings. Of your phone, computer, of every app you use. Investigate the UI, toggle some things around and see what happens. You won't break anything irreperably without a confirmation box asking you if you really mean to do that thing. And you can just look up what a setting will do before touching it if you're really worried ok?

Worst case scenario you just have to change the settings back if you don't like what happened but it is so so so important to explore the tools available to you and gain a better understanding for how the stuff you use works.

Even if you already know. Even if you're comfortable with how you use it now. You don't just have to accept whtever experience has been handed to you by default and it's good for you to at least know what's available to you.

Yeah. I've been "good at computers" since I was a kid and since I was a kid I've been telling people that all it is is a willingness to look at settings and push buttons.

Computers are good at "are you sure?" and "reset to defaults". There's a safety net. Go look at the options, and push 'em if you're not sure. That's like 90% of being "good at computers" : not being scared to push buttons and fiddle with options when something is broken or you need to learn a new thing

It always astounds me when I hear people complaining about things you can just...go change in the settings. It's there. Right there. Did you look? (They never look.)

All you need to do is mess with things and search for questions. Admittedly the enshittification of google et al has made that second part harder, but it's still worth trying before giving up.

Yeah!

It's like:

Step 1: read what the program is telling you. Did you get an error message? Actually read it.

Step 2: look in the options. Is there something that sounds like it's related? Maybe try changing it and see if it fixes it!

Step 3: go search for information on this problem.

But 90% of the time people get stuck on problems solved by steps 1 and 2.

It's cool how this is a 60k note post when almost every word of it is untrue

wait fr? can you say more bc that post def freaked me out

Short version; no, "phone addiction" and "social media addiction" aren't real. Obviously it's possible to overuse them in unhealthy ways, but that's true of practically anything enjoyable. Checking your phone isn't going to give you brain damage.

The only reference backing up any of this scaremongering is an article on phone addiction from "Addiction Center"; an internet marketing website which takes commission from forwarding people onto paid services. There are four(!) referral links Better Help embedded in the article. This is not an unbiased source.

It does include citations, but the sources are either spurious or nonexistent. The research they reference on how phone usage causes brain damage isn't linked, for example, but after finding the paper it's based on an inconclusive study of 19 children. The other papers cited found depression and anxiety correlate with phone usage, but only correlation not causation.

do genuinely find it fascinating how indeed.com is like the biggest job-hunting website out there and yet manages to be profoundly useless in every possible way

i apply for a job. i never hear back.

i search for "entry level jobs". i am shown listings for things like "military intelligence officer", "senior veterinary surgeon", and "forklift engineer".

i search for "jobs in bookselling". i am told that there are 9 bookselling jobs in my area. when i read the listings, 8 of these 9 jobs are care assistant roles and the 9th is a pyramid scheme.

i search for "jobs within 5 miles of my location". i am shown jobs that are on the other side of the country.

i type in "proofreading". i am shown listings for "ai training".

i search "creative industry jobs". half the listings are for finance companies and the other half require a degree in data science.

i receive an email. "based on your profile, indeed thought you would be a great match for this opportunity!" the linked job requires a degree that i do not have and 5 years of experience in a field that i know nothing about. the email does not explain why this opportunity would be "a great match".

i receive an email. "based on your profile, indeed thought you would be a great match for this opportunity!" underneath, in the body of the emaill, it warns me that i will not be able to apply for the job it has sent me because i do not meet the criteria.

i apply for a job with a temp agency. i never hear back. 2 weeks later the agency website goes down and never comes back up again.

i apply for a job. 6 months later i get a stock email telling me my application has been unsuccessful.

i apply for a job. i never hear back.

For fun points, this is pretty much exactly what happened to Denethor. His phone (palantír) showed him vitally important information on very real threats, but also kept him in contact with misery and pain and malicious people who wanted to drive him into despair, and in the end, on top of tragedies in his own life, caused him to destroy himself (and nearly his family too).

So yeah. Be careful not to become Denethor?

i feel so out of touch with current events and the daily lives of my friends and acquaintances and estranged relatives. i should remake instagram. i should remake twitter. what am i thinking. actually i should delete everything and live in a wooden house on shore. i should keep tumblr. maybe i only really need a laptop. i should become a luddite. i should get a flip phone. but not 100% of the time maybe 50/50 cause what about the uni app. the poste apps. the qr code app. whatsapp. all the apps. everything in the world is about the apps. we are life forms based on apps. oh god i am so overwhelmed. isn't anyone else tired. maybe i should get more out of touch actually. i should burn all my electronics. but my beloved blog. but i love music. and art. I should

theres bikes around the city you can rent but you have to use an app that needs your drivers license. theres buses that drive right to your destination, but if you dont have change you need the app. you can wash your car here if you sign into the app. you can go to the bathroom here you just have to unlock it with the app that needs your location on. you can order at this restaurant if you scan the code and download the app. im losing my freaking mind

you guys know you can get USB connectable CD, dvd, and blu-ray players right. and you can buy external hard drives with crazy amounts of space for an amount of money that would make the average person from 2009’s head explode bc of how cheap it is. and if you do this and get ripping software such as handbrake for CDs and DVDs and makeMKV for blurays you can both own a physical copy of whatever media you want and make it accessible to yourself no matter where you are. do you guys know this

lots of people are reblogging this and tagging it #piracy—i should clarify, this is not piracy! ripping DVDs and CDs to have your own copy is fully legal, because it’s your legal right to do what you will with your property individually. it only becomes illegal if you then distribute that file on the internet.
