#neil gaiman – @folatefangirl on Tumblr

Fangirling and Writer-Nerd Chaos

@folatefangirl / folatefangirl.tumblr.com

I'm Cinnia, late 20s, she/her, a fan of the health sciences and many other things, and a former quiet kid who was abducted by the theater people. This blog is a semi-queued experiment to vent my endless energy for fandoms, LGBT+ content, writing, languages, religion analysis and ExMormon content, dancing, mental health, etc. I also run the Grate Scoff food blog as well as the Incorrect Rings of Power and Incorrect Thornfruit Quotes blogs.

From the Neil Gaiman: Dream Dangerously :) (you can watch it here in US or with US vpn :) <3)

Terry Pratchett: One day he rang me up and said, "I've started a book and, I think it's good, but I haven't the faintest idea where it goes." So, I said, "All right, well, send me the pages." And I read it and wrote him back and said, "I don't know where it goes either, but I do know what happens next."

Neil Gaiman: I was pretty much nocturnal then, so I would write my chunk of Good Omens before I went to bed, and I'd go to sleep about five o'clock in the morning and I'd get up about one o'clock in the afternoon and my answering machine would be flashing on, and I'd press the button and a voice would say, "Get up, get up you lazy bastard, I've just written a good bit."

Terry Pratchett: We did it as a kind of holiday, because if it crashed and burned, nobody would notice.

for people that hate the theater kids, antis would fit right in with their intense theatrics

Reminder that neil gaiman once told a story about how his aunt risked her life for a book, during a time and place where getting caught reading would have gotten her and her family killed.

Yeah, I think maybe there's possibly a reason why the guy is so staunchly anti-censorship, even of fiction that is disgusting to you personally. And no by the way, lolicon is not connected to real predators. It's actually more correlated to victims of real child exploitation, which really puts this unhinged rant at the end into perspective, doesn't it?

If antis put half their energy into the right place, we could have an entire group of Ashton Kutchers saving thousands of real people from human trafficking!! Doesn't that sound like a fucking utopia?? Instead we have them threatening an established fiction author because he doesn't want fiction banned due to personal distaste. Ugh.

Anyway, go support neil. His sense of humor created this website in the first place, and he's good at writing fiction too. 👍

I went back to find the quote, and I misremembered, it was his cousin not his aunt, but it’s on the importance of storytelling;

“My cousin Helen, who is in her 90s now, was in the Warsaw ghetto during World War II. She and a bunch of the girls in the ghetto had to do sewing each day. And if you were found with a book, it was an automatic death penalty. She had gotten hold of a copy of ‘Gone With the Wind’, and she would take three or four hours out of her sleeping time each night to read. And then, during the hour or so when they were sewing the next day, she would tell them all the story. These girls were risking certain death for a story. And when she told me that story herself, it actually made what I do feel more important. Because giving people stories is not a luxury. It’s actually one of the things that you live and die for.”

Stories, including the ones you don’t like, have their place. You cannot ban media on the basis of offense. We’ve all seen where that leads. Neil has seen where that leads.

We’re not eager to see a repeat, thanks.

People arguing for fascististic censorship don't get to call themselves antifa. What the fuck.

Not Anti as in Antifa but anti as in Anti (Against) ____ Fandom Thing; usually anti Anything They Personally Dislike and Make Liking (or simply interacting with) 'Thing' a Moral Failing and Supporting "____ Illegal Thing" Happening to Real People. In this case, not calling for complete censorship of all media they deem 'problematic' is "Pedo Supporting" behaviour.

Some of the anti greatest hits being; age gaps at ALL is pedo supporting, being short and dating a tall person is pedo supporting, being childhood friends before dating is pedo supporting, etc etc.

From my unfortunate dealings with Anti Culture, and relatedness to Antifa is coincidentally and not a core part of their believes nor any part of their goals, they are predominantly pro censorship and pro christofacism with a huge sprinkling of 'Woke' performative talk and very little irl activism.

The often will share REAL CSEM around their groups while harassing CSA survivors. Often the are more interested in reporting people for writing fanfiction they find distasteful about their Blorbos (this includes anything from underage shit to writing them with the "wrong" fictional age appropriate/gendered partner) than doing what they can to help irl victims.

Do some antis actually try and do good for victims of CSA, CSE, abuse, and human trafficking, of course! But usually that is separate from anti movements themselves.

Like I fucking hate stupid fandom discourse bs but antis take it too a whole new level of Way Too Online.

I get that but the usernames are "antifaspiderman" and "antifamutantdown", so what's the "fa" in that case? Fandom? And why... would anyone think it's anything other than antifascist?

I know what antis are, y'all, they spent years harassing my family, sending my daughter anon messages telling her I'm abusive and lesbophobic, telling my wife she's ugly and not queer and a lot of other awful things bc I'm against censorship.

But those usernames say "antifa," and if that's not what they intend, then that's ... very silly.

The two things are, probably not connected?  The antifa in their usernames maybe referring to antifacist but the stuff they’re discussing, about Neil Gaiman being an ‘anti anti’ and their whole anti mindset/culture is, unconnected to their usernames.

Yeah, that's my point.

You can't be an antifascist and be pro-censorship-of-fiction. The two are diametrically opposed and totally incompatible.

Rhianna Pratchett confirming her father wouldn't be a """gender critical""" activist (whatever the hell those GCs stand for) if he were still alive

The GCs are Terfs. A specific type of transphobe. Quite a few British celebrity got recruited to their ranks and they have the money and clout to do a lot of damage unfortunately.

Terry passed away before Rowling started her downward spiral and played a significant role in creating the current toxic atmosphere around Trans rights in England . It is good to see that his daughter ,who is also a writer, stands up for human rights.

That’s despicable trying to “recruit” someone who’s DEAD. Not to mention there’s NOTHING in Pratchett’s books—including the ones of essays, articles, and speeches—to suggest he join in if he was alive.

And obviously his own kid would know his private opinions so hopefully the assholes will see her tweet and back the fuck off.

(GC stands for “gender critical”, when you see that it usually means that you’re talking to/about terfs who are trying to rebrand their image).

For those of you who are wondering who else the original tweet is referring to, they are talking about Margaret Atwood, a very prominent feminist author (probably best known for The Handmaid’s Tale). Because she is a feminist the terfs assumed that she’d naturally side with them, and it came as a massive shock (for some reason) when she very publicly opposed and humiliated all of  terfdom.

But yeah I don’t know how terfs can possibly get through Discworld books without any kind of self-awareness but apparently they do. I’ve also seen them talking about how the Wives in the Handmaid’s Tale are all trans women (solely based on the fact that they are infertile). If you know anything about the plot or even the basic premise you’ll know how ludicrous that suggestion is.

Terf rhetoric basically revolves around throwing shit at the wall and then crawling around in anything that sticks, but the underlying transphobia is always present.

Rhianna Pratchett is the best.

“Terry Pratchett” is now a trending topic on twitter and everyone is just slamming the people who claim he would be transphobic. It’s been really nice to see

Also there’s this

I’d already seen most of this on Twitter, but the Tom Hatfield tweet was new to me and got some laughs.

Also, this is the one that made me get all teary:

It was taken in Kensal Green Cemetery in February.

Terry borrowed the white jacket from our editor, Malcolm Edwards, and grumbled that it did nothing to keep him warm on a very cold day.

“Sometimes you have to be cold to look cool,” I told him.

“It’s all right for you,” he said. “You’re wearing a leather jacket.”

“You could wear a leather jacket too.”

“I’m wearing white,” said Terry, pointedly. “That way, when they come after us for writing a blasphemous book, they’ll know I’m the nice one.”

(After the photo was taken we noticed the bat-winged hourglass, which we hadn’t seen during the photo session, and requested bat-winged hourglasses as a design motif in the book.)

I love that Tumblr is like “We got Neil Gaiman to do a question and answer session so send in your questions and maybe he’ll answer them!” as though the man hasn’t spent the last few years hanging out here answering random questions and cementing himself as a widely beloved fixture of this site

“We brought in Neil Gaiman”

the fuck you did, he lives here

“we brought in neil gaiman”

you pulled him unceremoniously from his bed to go sit on the couch is what you did
