I like HoTD but I don't like people associated with that show if they're gonna talk shit about other fantasy shows to prop up theirs. Is this about WoT or RoP? If WoT, he thinks WoT isn't doing the work and doesn't have three dimensional characters? 🤨 I mean I have talked with some people who think WoT show isn't doing as deep character work as HoTD (but we're at the point in the series before that even starts in the books imo) but to say they're not three dimensional and you can't root for the characters is kinda insulting.
If it's about RoP I still don't agree cause I also like the characters in that show even if I'm not quite as attached to them as I am to WoT characters
always infinitely funny to me how the dance of the dragons is about the futility of both sides of the struggle as they tear each other apart and doom the realm. and the fandom looked at that for all of two seconds before deciding to recreate it online

The High Valyrian Writing System
I wasn't sure if I'd posted this here before, so I thought I would. This is the intro to the High Valyrian writing system I posted on Instagram (only this time the images didn't get weirdly cropped).
I finally found out why the Laena/Daemon match made me so uncomfortable 😵💫
Are you really going to tell me that a little girl went from this:
To this:
In three years? 🧐🧐🧐
It makes me so upset that hotd makers really casted another actress for Laena making a 16 yo effectively look ‘elder’ and ‘grown up’ and ‘seeking’ Daemon. They’re actively feeding stereotypes about girls of color growing up faster, wanting men’s attention earlier or being ‘more developed’ than their white counterparts. Alicent and Rhaenyra, two characters who are in universe older than Laena, kept their actress after the time lapse.
Laena Velaryon’s age and appearance seems to fluctuate however it’s more convenient for Targaryen men. She’s just a cute kid when Viserys is searching for a wife, making Alicent the ‘more sensible’ choice. She’s a beautiful young woman when Daemon needs to get away from Rhaenyra for a bit. She’s a middle aged woman who’s getting boring when he needs to come back.
Also, why did they change the actress (again!) after the time lapse? Only 12 years passed, at most. And teen!Laena is 16.
Are you really going to tell me she looks 28? Don’t get me wrong, Nanna Blondell is beautiful, but she, as she should, looks her age (37). Laena didn’t need another actress for just an episode, showcase her youth and the tragedy of being a placeholder in Daemon’s life (who, btw, didn’t age a day. I’m starting to think he keeps himself youthful by feeding on little girls.)
Alas, it really bothers me. As a young woman of color, it always pisses me off whenever people find excuses to sexualize woc and especially prey on young girls. It’s even worse when big entertainment companies feed into it.
I was reading your wiki when I noticed that the HV word for amaranth is olzon.
Did you know that there's a song called Amaranth sung by a singer called Annette Olzon? (the song is actually from finnish metal band Nightwish, but she was their lead singer at the time)
That's a nice coincidence - or if it was intentional props for the easter egg, it was fun to spot! :D
It was indeed intentional. I've been a big fan of metal ever since I heard Megadeth's "Train of Consequences" on MTV in 1994 (though of course I'll also never forget the first time I heard "Welcome to the Jungle" in 1987). It was a winding path that eventually took me to Finnish power metal (Megadeth to Metallica to Ozzy Osbourne to Black Sabbath to Iron Maiden to Helloween to Stratovarius to Nightwish to Sonata Arctica to Amberian Dawn…), but it felt like coming home. There was so much that I loved. And in touring through Finnish power metal, it's hard not to be struck by Tarja Turunen, the first singer of Nightwish. It's so different from what you come to expect from metal. Certainly I never would've expected you could take a full on opera singer and have her front a metal band, yet when you hear "Bless the Child" for the first time, you're left wondering why all metal bands don't have an opera singer at the helm. One of my favorite singers of all time was Geoff Tate of Queensrÿche, and Tarja felt like she was evoking his aura, and surpassing it.
Naturally, the first time I heard Annette Olzon as the new singer of Nightwish, I was disappointed. I was disappointed at the way Tarja was dumped from the band (the rest of the band ganged up on her and kicked her out by surprise), and also by the fact that Annette is an entirely different singer. The thing that distinguished Nightwish was the operatic style of singing of Tarja. Without her, they were just an average metal band with, frankly, too much orchestra (especially the later stuff). Even so, I wanted to give her a chance. Two songs jumped out to me off her first album with them: "Amaranth" and "For the Heart I Once Had". For both songs, it's Annette Olzon's performance that makes them memorable; it's no the music. (The music is fine, but honestly, the orchestral bits in "Amaranth" or just pompy fluff.)
Another album or two, and then Annette Olzon was dismissed for the crimes of (a) getting sick while on tour, and (b) getting pregnant. She was replaced by another female singer, Floor Jansen, who could approximate Tarja a bit better, but also had a traditional rock singing style, as well. Floor is Nightwish's current singer.
The thing that struck me about all this is the one who seemed to get the trashed the most was Annette Olzon—not the band members who kicked her and Tarja out for ridiculous reasons. Basically, it was their band, and the lead singer was someone who got to perform for them, and that was pretty lame. Also hard to ignore that the lead singer has always been the only female member of the band.
Anyway, Olzon ends in -on, which is a common noun ending in High Valyrian, and one often used for plants, so I thought it'd be cool to make the word for amaranth olzon. Incidentally, if you want to hear Tarja Turunen and Annette Olzon since Nightwish, Tarja has had a long and productive solo career (here's one of her songs I enjoyed), and Annette has a band called Dark Element with amazing guitarist Jani Liimatainen (one of my favorites is "Here's to You").
So yeah, good catch!
#our girl sees so far that she saw into another show
HOUSE OF THE DRAGON 1.09 “The Green Council” THE RINGS OF POWER 1.02 “Adrift”
A world where Rhaenyra got her wish and flew on dragon back with Alicent beyond the Narrow Sea and ate only cake.

Viserys and Daemon after killing their first wives and neglecting the children of their second wives
HotD had no excuse for having such mediocre costumes and wigs given the budget they had and meanwhile people gave RoP so much shit while it was miles better than HotD. Were the pompadours on the elves goofy? Yeah, but at least IT ACTUALLY LOOKED LIKE IT WAS REAL HAIR.
AGREED
Rhaenrya’s teenhood gold dress? unflattering as all get out!
Her tourney dress? Horribly fitted!
Alicent’s dresses? Horribly anachronistic in their fit!
The wigs? Terrible.
Seriously. Half of Milly Alcock’s dresses looked like they weren’t properly fitted, and given Rhaenyra is the princess and probably has every single outfit tailor-made, it just looks sloppy. The short sleeved dress looks especially jarring because NO ONE ELSE has a dress with short sleeves. Sleeveless? Yes. Short sleeves, no.
It would have made sense if Emily Carey had gowns at first that weren’t well-fitted (if you want to imply Alicent has Rhaenyra’s hand-me downs, which isn’t as bad as it sounds: ladies-in-waiting would get from the lady they served since fabric was super expensive back then and it was a very good gift). Emily Carey’s gowns meanwhile all look cheap minus one, and that’s the red dress she has here:
She has no excuse having her costumes looking cheap before she marries Viserys, because the Hightowers aren’t poor by any means, and they can afford fancy fabrics (compare that to Sansa’s gowns, since she sometimes had dresses with fabric that looked coarse early in season 1, but given she’s from the North and they’re above all practical and looking for fabric that will keep them warm rather than look fancy, it makes sense).
Alicent (the embroidery is nice, but you’ll notice when she moves the fabric seems very… stiff. Which is the kind of stuff you’ll use for furniture or curtains rather than clothing):
Meanwhile, here’s Sansa:
The fabric is coarse, yes, but it looks like some kind of wool that’s meant to keep warm rather than look pretty. And it also looks like fabric you’d use for clothing, and not to cover up a sofa!
And even when Alicent is queen, Emily Carey’s dresses look rough sometimes. The wedding gown (in a scene that was cut out of the episode) is… embarrassing, really (the crown is not too bad (but it’s too modern and looks like something you’d find on Etsy) but the gown? Yeesh, the dragon wings she has on her shoulders are pretty but otherwise, it looks unfinished)
And then, there’s the infamous green dress that’s supposed to be a big moment, but it looks like it’s a polyester gown you get on Amazon by typing “medieval dress”.
And honestly, that’s a problem a lot of the costumes in HotD have. The fabrics you choose *are* important. It’s not just a matter of “the colors are nice” or “it looks fancy”. The reason why people say a lot of the costumes look like Party City costumes are because they’re either made of polyester (and if you get polyester/nylon with a silky appearance, I can guarantee your actors will hate you because it’s one of the least breathable fabrics I can think of apart from latex/vinyl), either they’re picking fabric you usually use for furnishing. Which might imply they have a costuming team that isn’t used to work on historically inclined projects.
You know you messed up when cosplayers find better fabric than you:
(After a quick Google search, the head costume is Jany Temime… who worked on Harry Potter, Bond films, and is Emma Watson’s stylist… which makes a lot of sense lmao)
Like, look at the Star Wars prequels. They had the Jedi’s outfits made of rugged silk, because it would make their clothing flow around a lot more gracefully during fight scenes. Most of Padmé’s outfits were velvet or silk (and I will refrain from going on a rant about the sequels’ costuming, because every time I start thinking about Rey’s outfit in The Rise of Skywalker or Michael Kaplan bitching about Kelly Marie Tran’s silhouette, I want to murder a kitten).
And then there’s the wigs. All of the Targaryens except maybe Gerard Way Targaryen Aegon look like they have dry hair, and it’s unacceptable especially for Rhaenyra. Even if you want to go for the take that she doesn’t care about her appearance (not in the book she doesn’t lmao), she’d still have a flock of ladies’ maids oiling the shit out of her hair every day. I also want to talk to whoever chose that hairstyle for Rhaenys, because Eve Myles is a good-looking older lady with more of an angular face, but that hairdo does not do her any favors.
Helaena never has a decent dress despite being a princess (and if their excuse is that Helaena is autistic-coded and therefore doesn’t care about her appearance, MISS ME WITH THAT BS), but do you know who has wigs and dresses that are (relatively) consistently good? Olivia Cooke. So on that basis alone, I don’t blame people for feeling like Alicent is the main character to Rhaenyra’s detriment, because you can tell they’re putting more care into her appearance than they are for Rhaenyra, and that is a problem.
Alicent and her children.
