In Austria, we call kittens at that age “Autodromkatzerl”, which translates to “bumper car kittens”, because of the way their tail sticks up. It’s not a really common word, but a very cute one, I think

this is a genuinely delightful bit of knowledge, thank you for sharing this!! omg

so this European clothing retailer decided to advertise their jean cuts on youtube and it's unintentionally the funniest shit I've seen today. why? well.

now important context here: in German, die (pronounced 'dee') is just a feminine article, it literally means "the".

but if an ad gets placed in the middle of an English video and doesn't use a single explicitly German word for most of the ad, even a native speaker is gonna think "they want me to die how?" it keeps getting funnier.

I mean, holy shit

i will use these as reaction images until i die

Ok so I’ve fallen down a rabbit hole of researching period food & recipes, and,,,,

"one fifteenth century recipe contains the word "Chickens" four times-with four different spellings, of which the first is "Schyconys.""

excuse me medieval people but what the fuck

there is a German cookbook, 14th century, where almost every recipe is titled "eine gute speise" ("a good food"), with notable exceptions such as "das ist auch gute" ("this is also good").

I am not a fan of all those lists of “untranslatable words” but I don’t believe that there is a translation of the word that can be as satisfying as “Feierabend” itself. One of the best German words. Incredibly good. 12/10. Everyone should feier their abend.

When I was working in Germany for a bit my coworkers kept telling me “have a good party tonight!” when the day was over because they thought they were being nice translating for me, and I had to explain that that does Not mean the same thing in English. It was very funny.

@polyglot-noodle it literally translates to “party evening” but describes the time of day after having finished work. No matter at what time your shift finishes and if you are only going to lie on your couch watching netflix after that, your coworkers will wish you a nice party evening. It’s also incredibly satisfying to close your work laptop and just exclaim “party evening!!!” to announce the end of your work day. The english language is really missing out.
