charlie trying to make spaghetti moodboard
- “charlie, i have to get out of here. i can’t live in forks anymore.”
- she’s running through the house, throwing things into her suitcase
- her hair is escaping from her ponytail and she can’t seem to stand still
- charlie follows along behind her, patiently picking up the things she drops, his heart thundering in his chest as he tries to figure out if this time is for real
- “renee, i can’t just leave my parents. my job is here, we only bought the house a year ago we can’t just-…”
- “it’s not a ‘we’ situation charlie.” she snaps. “i’m sorry. i’m not asking you to come with me.”
- “not a ‘we’ situation? you’re my wife. we’re… we’re in love. aren’t we?” he stammers, his stomach twisting as he realised that it wasn’t true anymore
- her face and voice soften
- she walks over to him and puts her hand on her cheek, “charlie, i’ll always love you. you’re the father of my child, my first real love. but i’m not in love with you anymore. and i don’t want to live in forks.”
- “what about bella?”
- “she’s coming with me.”
- “like hell she is.” he snarls.
- renee rolls her eyes as though he’s being ridiculous, “don’t make this harder than it has to be charlie. i’m her mother-…”
- “…-and i’m her father. she needs me just as much as she needs you, and i love her just as much as you do. please renee, this is your choice. i’m not going to keep her from you, but i want her to stay in forks and live with me. even you must know that forks is much safer for a kid than any of the big cities you have your eye on.”
- “but-…”
- “please. please renee, if you’re going to do this, leave her with me. you need to find yourself, figure yourself out. having a baby in the backseat isn’t going to help you do that.”
- she considers this for several minutes, torn between the two lives she belongs to her; her own and her daughter’s
- “fine. okay charlie, you can keep her. for now. but i’ll come back for her, i promise.”
- “we can talk it over when you do.”
- “i’m going to stay in a motel tonight and then drive to arizona tomorrow. i’ll call.”
- “yeah, make sure you do. i want you to be safe.”
- “look after her charlie. and look after yourself. because i do love you,” she insists. “really i do. both of you. i’m not doing this to be cruel. i just… need to do what’s right for me before it’s too late. i need you to let me go.”
- “i can let you go… i think, as hard as it might be. but i can’t let bella go, renee.”
- “goodbye charlie.”
- charlie stares through the flyscreen as her taillights get dimmer as they get further away
- he watches the spot on the road where her car disappears and she leaves his life, in this capacity at least, forever
- the baby has started crying, maybe it was the slam of the screen door
- charlie takes the stairs two at a time and scoops her up into his arms, cradling her close
- “it’s going to be okay, bells.” he promises her. “we’re going to look after each other. you and me, we’re a team. we’ve got each other’s backs.”
y’all asked for it so here we go
- renee still saw bella a lot and was an active mother in her life despite the distance between them
- she visited forks several times a year, sleeping in charlie’s bed while he nobly took to the couch
- she then insisted bella visit her every summer when she was big enough to fly by herself
- but bella was daddy’s little girl and the two of them did everything together
- the rest of the town pitched in to help charlie raise bella but he didn’t need as much help as they all imagined he would
- bella was a chilled out kid and adored her dad
- they walked around town as a pair, bella chatting animatedly to him as she swung off his arm
- she took her first steps on la push beach while jake’s older sisters whooped and cheered alongside billy and charlie
- she took an interest in baking early on and charlie taught himself to cook and bake so that they could do it together, with bella perched on the countertop measuring sugar and cracking eggs with her dad’s help
- they took weekly trips to the library where they stocked up on books for her to devour
- he read to her every night
- she cries on her first day of school because she wants charlie to come too
- he’s called back to the school a few hours later to collect her because she thumped little mike newton over the head for trying to play “kiss tag” with her
- he rolls up in his uniform and tells mike newton off for five minutes before the teacher reminds him that bella is supposed to be the one in trouble
- she toddles into the police cruiser and he takes her for ice cream instead
- bella grew up hiking with charlie and he taught her all about the woods, especially the wildlife
- she’s best friends with jake of course, but because they never spend any time apart from one another they just remain friends
- when she gets her period she has no problem telling charlie and he drives to the store and brings back one of everything for her to try
- he stands outside the bathroom door calling out encouragement and checking she’s okay with everything
- then they go for ice cream
- long story short - charlie swan is bella’s best friend in the world
- they never fight, mostly because they’re both so relaxed
- her friends are all jealous of bella’s relationship with charlie
- one day a new family arrive in town and charlie tells her to make a special effort with them
- he knows how small-minded the rest of the town can be but he’s met the doctor and he likes him a lot
- so first day of school bella is assigned to one of the many new kids
- “i’m bella swan.” she says, smiling gently and extending her hand towards him
- “edward cullen.” he replies and shakes her hand briefly
- even through her gloves his hands are cold
- “welcome to forks.”
- that summer was the first time she ever argued with her mother about leaving forks for her holiday
- charlie was over the moon to have her stay at home because it made him think that maybe, just maybe, she would never want to leave forks and their blissful existence as a team of two could go on forever
- how wrong he was
- at first charlie is thrilled that bella has taken such an interest in the cullens, especially when it becomes clear that none of the other students are going to bother
- and since it’s a few years earlier than twilight is set (because they’ve only just got to town) bella’s a little bit younger and she and edward become firm friends before anything romantic even happens
- they become friends really fast and spend as much time together as they can, much to the confusion and chagrin to bella’s other friends
- they study together, competitively trying to get the correct answer before the other
- she lends him her favourite books and he reads them within a day and then returns them to her, commenting on the scribbles in the margins and how much he agrees with her thoughts on the characters
- in returns he lends her CDs and she falls asleep almost every night to his latest selection
- she introduces him to charlie and they get on pretty well
- charlie’s just glad she’s spending less time with mike newton - he never really forgave him for the first day of school incident
- one saturday, bella and charlie are out hiking in the woods and charlie is telling her a long story about something that happened at the police station the day before
- she’s half-listening, soaking up the peace of the woods at the same time when she sees something
- a flash of white so blurred she couldn’t be sure it had ever even been there
- she has no idea what it is - an animal maybe?
- she wants to follow the movement and find out what it was but something in her gut held her back so she returned to charlie’s story with added vigour
- on monday when she sits with edward and lunch he tells her, “you should really stay out of the woods, bella.”
- she scoffs. “i was practically raised in those woods, i know them like the back of my hand. and i-… hang on, how did you even know i was in the woods?”
- “bella, there are dangerous things out there and the woods are a breeding ground for them. i don’t want you to get hurt.”
- “you don’t know them like i do. if you did-… come with me.”
- “come with you? into the woods?”
- “sure! i can show you my favourite spot and prove to you there is nothing wrong with going into the woods.”
- edward agrees and the following sunday when charlie goes fishing bella meets edward and takes him hiking towards the meadow
- he’s amazed by how beautiful it is and how radiant bella looks in it, even as red-faced and sweaty as she is from the walk to it
- “what is this place?”
- “my dad used to bring me here when i was little. he said that we could talk about anything i needed to talk about because the trees were so thick nobody else in the world would be able to hear us. i told him all of my deepest darkest secrets here.” she flops down on the grass, finding a sunny spot
- edward stays hovering on the edge of the clearing. “and he loved you regardless?”
- “of course he did. charlie and i, we’re a team. we’ve got each other’s backs. nothing i could ever do would hurt him enough to stop him loving me and vice versa.”
- “bella, do you think if i told you my deepest and darkest secrets you would love me regardless?”
- “of course.”
- “even if the rest of the world would think me a monster and demand you stay away from me?”
- “who care’s what the rest of the world thinks? they’ll never know. it’s just you, me and the trees.”
I think they should have made Charlie a vampire too. Mostly just cause I think it’d be funny. He’d be so pissed at having to spend eternity looking at edwards stupid face. But like. Just living forever so he can remind Edward every day that he Does Not Approve.

Do you ever think of poor Billy Black who has to endure Charlie Swan after 4 beers on their football game nights and Charlie is just rambling about how wonderful Dr Cullen is and haven’t you seen his face Billy? I don’t know how anyone gets anything done with him around
I’m not gay Billy but if Carlisle ever asked, I’d kiss him. I mean Billy, who could give up that chance! I’d have to do it, for the nurses Billy. For the nurses.
Billy Black just takes another swig of his beer and wishes that he didn’t live in a town full of wannabe monster fuckers dear god
