not only are there no bad languages there are also no bad or annoying dialects

Every dialect you don’t like is a friend you haven’t yet made

everyone who wants to suggest a language that’s actually a bad language. No ❤️

btw it does not escape my notice that when people want to make fun of English they make fun of us Black English or uk multicultural London English or accents inflected by patois and when they want to make fun of French they make fun of québécois. Even when they make fun of colonial languages they colonise. There’s no such thing as a bad accent

This post was not about “making fun of” or joking about your accent or language or various varieties it was about the fact there are no inherently morally impure languages or dialects and your decisions about not liking languages and dialects are dumb.

there are no bad dialects ❤️

and the reviews:

#sounds like someone who hasn't been subjected to lingua bruixa #posts that let you know op has never heard of nynorsk Yes even scousers #this is wrong on so many levels#first of all have you heard dutch? ohhh youre a better person than i am LOL (i have a major bone to pick with swiss german) Even swiss german ? #this is false there are many bad languages and annoying dialects and i can make a list that i couldnt count on my fingers #wrong. example: śląsk #shut up i cant stand ljubljana dialect and some that sounds like speakers are swallowing whole words #ufff pero el acento de madrid te pone a prueba porque madre mia... #[through gritted teeth] even excessively upper class RP english #My only hated bit of language is Cockney rhyming slang#Which should die in a fire You will not stop me from laughing at the Québécois

look. i know that some of these are jokes, and I know that people are going to claim that some of these are hashtag class or decolonial warfare, but you cannot destroy an oppressive ideology (deciding some linguistic variants are good and some are bad) with the same ideology (deciding some linguistic variants are good and some are bad)

What accent coach is working magic behind the scenes of iwtv. A british man plays an american man with a thick new orleans accent that slowly fades to a standard american accent. Another british man plays an indian man with a french accent that morphs into a british accent. An australian man plays a french man with the strongest most unintelligible french accent youve ever heard

if you give “stupid” characters rural/southern accents i don’t like you and if you give “smart” characters rural/southern accents but it’s a punchline i don’t like you even more

the other day I was out at lunch with some people I don’t know too well & they got talking specifically about West Virginian accents in the context of a movie that takes place there & that the movie opted out of doing accents & one of them laughed and said “I mean, can you imagine if characters sounded like that in serious moments??” I was like yeah I can because everyone where I’m from does sound like that. Y’all are so annoying.

no need for a more specific word because it all falls under classism and/or racism.

west virginia is home to some of the strongest labor & union movements in U.S. history, from miners’ strikes to the 2018 teachers’ strikes (where 20,000 teachers went on strike together with community support).

For the last 100 years it has become very beneficial to those in power for the rest of the country to think of us as very stupid, backward, “inbred,” etc. It’s not an accident. there were real efforts made to create & proliferate the stereotype of the stupid hillbilly.

Likewise it’s not an accident that dialects like AAVE are treated as a joke. Easier to dismiss civil rights leaders if you think what they say is inherently comedic or uneducated.

Oh my god

@togrutahhh an actual example of the find and replace Italian:

Ahhh I see, it's the Agatha Cristie/JKR method of writing ESL people where they only use their native language for the simplest of words and immediately recognizable cognates + a horrid phonetic accent.

Because the leap from assistenza to assistance is too much but propitious is a word that Italians not only commonly use but also know the English equivalent of...

Also, free tip for people who insist on writing out Italian accents phonetically: we struggle with words ending in consonants because, aside from loan words, we don't typically have them. So we instinctively add a schwa sound to the end syllable: we pronounce "sport" as "sport-uh" and "bar" as "bar-uh", for example. The infamous "it's-a me, Mario" is an example of this: the ts consonant group is hard to pronounce so a person with a strong accent would add the vocal-y ending as a kind of crutch that helps pronounce it.

This person failed at this so hard that she only added the "a" after other vowels, literally the opposite of what even a mocking stereotype of an Italian accent would sound like 😂😂😂

Amazing. Thank you for the extra information! I'm sorry for inflicting this on you! (Not sorry enough to stop, obviously)

youtubers love to say “i hope i’m pronouncing that correctly” while recording themselves in a video that they upload to the internet, which they have access to

Hint: its because the video is not as well researched as its presentation implies

Hint: it’s because sometimes it’s hard to pronounce words especially if you don’t use them very often

Don’t leave this in the tags!! They’re good points! An attempt is better than nothing!

It’s one thing to listen to a correct pronunciation. It’s another to actually have your mouth form the words, especially when you’re using a sound you don’t normally use in your native language.

Maybe they’re not saying “I didn’t look up the actual pronunciation and I’m just winging it.” Maybe it’s “I looked it up and it uses a sound that I don’t use in my day to day speech and I don’t think I did it quite right but I tried.”

And sometimes, there aren’t sufficient resources to teach you the correct pronunciation! Sometimes you’ll get bot-made videos that contradict each other.

This this this this. As someone who struggles to pronounce a couple of words I use fairly often my FIRST LANGUAGE, thanks to those particular sounds just being difficult shapes for me to string together coherently, I am constantly afraid of fucking up words in other languages or even just with roots in other languages.

It’s one thing to not even try, but the “I hope I’m doing this correctly” isn’t always “I’m hoping I can just wing this word with whatever I think it’s supposed to sound like,” a lot of times it “okay so I’ve looked it up and tried it a few times so I’m really hoping its coming out right, but I’m not used enough to the language to really be sure .”

Languages are fucking DIFFICULT for a lot of people. Not just the repeating/speaking part, but also the ability to HEAR and RECOGNIZE the patterns and sounds.

not to mention the multitude of words, names and phrases that have more than one pronunciation depending on regional variance. but unfortunately that level of grass-touching really takes the fun out of "everyone but me is stupid and wrong"

when a british actor does an american accent everyone’s like “i didn’t even know they were british until they were on colbert.” but when americans do a british accent everyone’s like “they’re supposed to be from east cocksford but their glottal e’s are north dicksford. shameful.”

Saw an interesting interview with Hugh Laurie talking about this (on playing House and 'getting away with' doing an American accent):

".... because they're much less interested...they don't have that 'Professor Higgins' ear for.... class and background and geography and the way the British are much more attuned to wait a second where are you from and what trick are you trying to pull on me by... with that particular choice of words. I think partly again because it's such a big country nobody really.... it doesn't bother people so much where you're from or why you sound the way you sound. America's a country that's too big to know itself. Someone living in Florida's go no idea how people behave or what they eat or how they dress in Oregon, it's just so far away - whereas we know, of course, we know absolutely everything about... every British drama we watch, we're like, well that's High Wycombe, that could never happen because it's a one way system there! whereas America's so mythically grand, it's too big to know it'self, and that actually has an affect with things like accent. "

or do you just pronounce con (a fraud) and cone (a pointed object) the same or what

My Argentinean housemate just got a book on proper American accents and I’ve never felt more attacked

like why’s it gotta be so accurate

What’s fascinating to me is realizing that we simply ignore the glottal stop in every word that begins with a vowel when we speak quickly. Like unless you’re enunciating or speaking slowly you simply tell that glottal stop “fuck you” and hook the vowel to the previous consonant sound. Amazing. Glottal stops more like waste of time amirite

SUPER SALAD

Wtf we actually talk like this don’t we
