Thank you to the anon who donated 8.20 Pac-Man Fever (Studio & Network Draft) last night:

Just to remind everyone, this is the Studio & Network Draft, not the final draft, and that any changes from this version could be due to writing edits, directing choices, budget, acting choices etc.

If you want to help out with the project* join our discord server:

*You can see all of the other scripts we have here. To buy scripts we need donations, and the more people are involved the smaller the hit everyone takes. To help with this, we have set up a server. It is a fandom neutral zone so as many people as possible feel comfortable joining.

8.20 | Pac Man Fever

Can I just point out the fact that Dean is a medic here. Like we always see the big, macho hunter who takes no bullshit, and its often difficult to remember why Dean ever really hunted in the first place: he liked helping people. We forget that sometimes so seeing Dean here, while yes he is a soldier, he is also a medic which would mean that he cares for people.

I don’t remember the exact phrasing but i will never forget the scene in season 10 where Dean, in a rare show of honesty told Sam that at the heart of things hunting…and helping people in the process, is at the core where he finds his PEACE. That is SUCH a vital piece to know when you try and figure out who he is as a character. That Dean Winchester..who’s never felt whole or sufficient since the day his mother died finds relief from his pain by granting other people the exact kind of rescue and support that was absent for him. To quote another blogger, whose name i can’t remember (if its you please hit my inbox so i can sing your praises/give full credit) Dean grew up to be the rescuer he most needed but never had himself when he was the victim..

Something that really strikes me about 8.20 is how Dean is portrayed in Charlie's dream. Dean wakes up in a hospital. Charlie imagines herself a fighter. But how does she see Dean? A military doctor. A soldier, to be sure, and judging by the medals her dream decorates him with, an accomplished, brave soldier and protector. But above all he's a DOCTOR. Someone who heals, who helps people.

Isn’t that lovely? I love that Charlie knows Dean. And it makes sense, given the way they met and their interactions afterward. In fact, I think most people who meet Dean because he’s trying to save them from monsters would see him in the exact same way. It’s only John, and later the angels, who saw Dean as a soldier and a playing piece on a chess board. Unfortunately, John’s opinion formed Dean’s own opinion of himself, and it’s really a shame, because that’s just not who Dean is.

When Charlie met Dean, he (and Sam) were trying to save the country from Leviathons, and Charlie was so inspired, she volunteered to put her own life at risk too. And then Dean helped her through the conversation with the guard and later, when she met him again, there he was, trying to save more people from being hurt at the LARPing event.  And when she meets up with him again at the bunker, he’s trying to help Sam recuperate, keep him safe from the trials, and so he brings Charlie along on his hunt. And on that hunt, she sees him figuring out the monster, interacts with him in a sort of student/mentor kind of way. And her subconscious mind obviously knows he’s there to save her so it’s not surprising at all that her mind would dream up a job for Dean that fits him so perfectly.

Because, basically, all Charlie knows about Dean is that he’s dedicated his life to saving people. And that he takes care of the people he loves (the people in his unit, just like a military doctor), which now includes her. And honestly, I think that’s what most people who really know Dean would say about him. Because that’s who Dean is.

random fandom thoughts on 8.20

lookatthesefreakinghipsters always increases my appreciation of SPN episodes by a factor of like 50 billion, and apparently “Pac-Man Fever” (8.20) is no different. We were discussing how excellent it was to have Charlie as a sort of fandom rep within the show, with Dean and Sam being so chill with her fannishness and even participating in it (see: Dean’s confirmation that they’ll be coming to a Moondor battle and Sam calling Charlie “Your Highness”). Because this episode acknowledges fandom/fannishness as something other than “deviant and excessive,” the way it’s portrayed through Becky (or should we say samlicker81):

“And then Sam touched—” No. “—caressed Dean’s clavicle. ‘This is wrong,’ said Dean. ‘Then I don’t want to be right,’ replied Sam, in a husky voice.”

Instead, in 8.20, we see immersion in fan culture allowing a young woman to find a sense of connection with her lost parent, to deal with and (eventually) work through loss and grief.
