Hi, anyways, pheww that ending of the episode is brilliant I must say. Cause it seems like the end. It looks like the end with montages and go into the sunset but that's on the surface. But there's something hollow. Something missing. So I wanna know, what's your opinion? What's next for the boys?

Hi okay, thank you for asking!! I wanted to gather my thoughts before I answered but here, I think, is as gathered as they’re gonna get:

The ending of that episode was strange, hollow is the perfect word for it. It’s surface, like you said. I’m not going to say it’s fake as in it didn’t happen, but we also didn’t get the whole story - specifically, we were missing the boys’ emotions. They were often filmed from distant or off-putting angles, sometimes even hiding their faces from us. All of this was clearly intentional. We barely, if at all, got their POV in this episode. I am very, very interested to see how our perspective of this episode will change once we do. Dabb has promised a finale that is character-driven and focused on the boys and their found family. So, feelings are a must.

We know very, very little about how the finale will go down and I personally love it that way! So I don’t want to speculate about how the episode might begin, or specific endings for the boys, or ways things may or may not play out. But I feel like I can say a few things with some confidence, based on storytelling techniques and story structure alone:

  • I believe more than ever that Cas will come back, because they teased the possibility in multiple ways in 15x19, most blatantly (and cruelly) with the phone call using his actual voice. They are making the viewers want it, they are showing us how much Dean wants it, this is purposeful. Not to mention the Empty, where Cas has gone, is still in play as the only major player left on the board, and that Jack has recently made it “loud,” a pretty significant hanging plot thread.
  • If Cas comes back, then Dean must respond in some way to his love confession, because he hasn’t had his turn to say his piece.
  • If Dean must respond to Cas’ love confession, a response they saved for the series finale, as a major climactic moment... well, I just don’t think it’s going to be anti-climactic. If you know what I mean.

To me, everything I just said there seems like the epitome of logic and reason, but I know that many prefer to manage their expectations and I absolutely understand and respect that! We all must protect our hearts however we need to. I do it by having no expectations whatsoever for where our boys land at the end, or how they get there. It is difficult, especially, to trust television storytelling, when there are so many variables outside of satisfying story structure that can determine the way a story plays out onscreen. But this season has been all about story structure, it’s been written into the show itself, and Dabb has promised me an ending to honour the characters above all. I believe him.

For Sam? That is purpose and leadership and, they’ve made clear, Eileen by his side.

For Dean? That is embracing his whole self, everything he is and all the ways he loves, and being brave enough to say it out loud.

For Cas? That is accepting at last that he is loved, and deserves to be loved, not because he is useful, but because he is him. To choose to live.

They are almost, almost there.
