danneelackles512 Thank you John Dee and Edward Kelley for recording down for future generations the impossibly difficult to pronounce Enochian (Celestial Speech) language. For the record the SPN sound supervisor could easily teach a class in Enochian- his diction and gasp of the language is a bit unnerving! These people don’t play 😇 👻 dubbingday #sisterjo #spnfamily

Yes, this is quite possibly the nerdiest post I have ever, ever made.
I’ve listed all spoken Enochian in Supernatural Episodes with translations (as best as I could decipher!). If you know of any I missed, let me know and I’ll add them : D

Castiel isn't a native English speaker

and I wish the spn writers were more aware of it.

Do you know how many times I had to stop myself from using a German turn of phrase while speaking English or French?

I wish that sometimes Cas would use these really weird similes and metaphors that are a direct translation from enochian, so it’s Dean and Sam who have to ask for clarification to understand what he means.

In other words, I wanna see more scenes like “assbut” and “you speak with the mouth of a goat”.

On a somewhat similar note, there’s no spn fanfic trope I love more than “Cas swears like a sailor in enochian”.

Cas isn’t just a different species, he’s from a different culture and I wanna see more evidence of that!

He’s also ancient, older than humanity at the very least. Even if he speaks English fluently, he’s bound to have picked up some phrases that went out of use millennia ago.

I know those didn’t go out of use milenia ago, only a few centuries, but this really reminded me of this victorian slang post that crossed my dash a while ago.

Just imagine Cas at the dinnertable with the brothers:

Cas: I realise that you used to believe that I was really banging up the elephant …

Sam and Dean in unison: that you what???

Cas *hesitates*: Do you not know that expression? I heard it in London a while ago … Oh! Is it one of those regional expresion? I can never quite tell which ones are universal and which aren’t.

Sam: Cas, when did you pick up that expressin?

Cas: It must have been at some point during the 1800s, why?

Dean: then it’s not a regional thing, it’s a fucking century thing!

Cas *grumpily*: well, it’s not my fault that you humans don’t know what the word consistency means

Dean used to make fun of Cas for it until he realized Claire does the same thing to him with memes and stuff…

“I am NOT old like Cas. I’m not even forty!!”

“Yeah, so…you’re ancient. Just accept it, old man.”

The symbols themselves, I’m translating using this site

According to John Dee’s diary, Enochian is read/written from Right to Left.

The X-Ray made all of the symbols mirrored and flipped, but you can still read it right-to-left from this perspective, keeping in mind that each symbol is a horizontal reflection of its true form. (especially important when dealing with E, X and I, which all look very similar)

According to wikipedia and Benjamin Rowe, both C and K are used in different context, through the symbol for both is the same. Luckily, very few words actually use the K version, and I was able to use ‘C’ in all Enochian words.

Likewise, the symbol for U is also V and W

The symbol for I is also J and Y

If letters on the lines below are in parenthasis, it is because the letters themselves are not visible on the x-ray, and were inferred based on what word(s) contain the visible section. For instance, in line 2, CONISB is visible, and the only match was ‘CONISBRA’

A simple ‘-’ means the letter is illegible and unable to be inferred.

Right Side / Left Side

ENOCHIAN

1- ADOIAN / ABRANG

2- (AMGE)DPHAN T ADRE / ADGMACH

3- (ADG)MACH APILA / CNILA CONISB(RA)

4- ENAE GEIAD / LML OECRIMI O

5 - G PAMPHICAS / POILP PRAF PRD(ZAR)

6- (P)AULACARP PELE PRAP PRGE PUGO P

7- PIAD PAIMOE / PUIM QAA Q T QTING

8 - (Illegible)

ENGLISH TRANSLATION

1- The face / I have prepared

2- I begin anew, Angel of Fire / Much Glory

3- Much Glory, Liveth / of Blood, The work of Man

4- The Stars, Our Lord & Master / Treasure , Singing praises ….

5- (insult?), Divided / Dwell, Diminish

6- (name of an evil spirit), He who works wonders / Balance, Fire, as unto …

7- Your god, ???? / Sharp, Of your creation, or, also, The Rotten

8- ??????/ ?????

~~

Some words I cannot find a direct meaning for, such as “Pamphicas” in the 4th line which I cannot find any definition. It is listed as something that should be said with a ‘Contemptuous tone’ which gives the impression that it is an insult.

A ‘????’ means that I cannot find any translation for that section

There’s the poem with verses divided by Side (Left or Right ribs)

The face, I begin anew, Angel of Fire,  Much glory, Liveth, The Stars, Our Lord and Master (insult) Divided (name). He who works wonders, Your god, ???….

I have prepared, much Glory, of blood, The work of Man. Treasure, singing praises…Dwell, Diminish. Balance, Fire, as Unto… Sharp, of your creation, or also, the Rotten.

Angels are said to sing praises to God, and Supernatural says their language is Enochian. You can actually find sites that have the Enochian scripts to ACTUAL god-praising song/poetry  (They’re actually really beautiful)

I also came across this lovely work called ‘The Vision and the Voice’ by Aleister Crowley.

So that was fun.

In the 7th rib on the right, it reads ’ QT QTING’ and when I first saw it, I imagined Castiel starting to write the sigils, intending to just write ‘QTING’ but accidentally making another ‘Q’ instead of ‘I’. Instead of scribbling it out, he tries to make it part of the poem.

I admit I laughed at the image of Castiel getting all huffy and defensive, if Gabriel questioned him about the terrible syntax.

DrSilverfish adds: Oh that’s wonderful, so in angelic colloquial the translation is, roughly:

This beautiful face and body I, angel of fire, recreated in glory from the Pit. This lovely form, full of stars, most delectable examplar of humanity, beloved work of God… if you should dare harm him, prepare for a smite-ing, thou beast!

Signed, Castiel Angel of the Lord etc…. #datassizpropertyofCastiel

This sigil-

really reminds me of this sigil-

which would make sense in the light of @mittensmorgul‘s  clever thought that Delphine’s mark is linked to the Hand of God (Gabriel being the Messenger of God and all).

Ooh. Interesting! It does have the same general shape… and the Horn of Gabriel could be a component of that sigil, based on @f-ckyeahfutbol‘s addition to that post about how sigils are created.

What did the Horn of Gabriel do, after all? It summoned angels. Castiel used it to gather his troops, and Gadreel had used it to lure angels into Metatron’s trap.

And I find this interesting for two reasons: If the similarity was intentional, it only adds to my conviction that Delphine’s sigil was designed sort of randomly (a la Cas’s Enochian Warding Tattoo), and therefore lack any real world significance outside the show (because if you google “horn of gabriel” you only get references to this image from Supernatural and renditions of Gabriel painted in classical art blowing on a literal horn, while googling “sigil of gabriel” brings up an entirely different set of images created in the rose cross method f-ckyeahfutbol mentioned). Second, could that mean Delphine’s sigil was created to represent the four archangels who initially locked away the Darkness, or even just symbols representing Michael, Raphael, and Gabriel (since Lucifer theoretically ended that confrontation bearing the Mark of Cain)?

INTERESTING.

The sign in the Horn of Gabriel is the Enochian letter for b or pa, with what appears to be the halo of the sun placed on top of it (the halo is not a part of the Enochian symbol system).

But the sigil on Delphine doesn’t resemble any of the other Enochian letters, so if it were a composite of letters of an alphabet, I’d rather look to the so-called ‘celestial’ or ‘angelic script’ from the 16th century. I can sort of make out the letters he, pe and zade.

The similarity in shape, however, is not necessarily co-incidence because they both kind of resemble the heart.

And… this is the entrance to the rabbit hole of potentially plausible paths to traverse in decoding that sigil. I think i’ll tweet bobo and ask if he knows who designed it…

Good call! I don’t have a twitter but Wanek might also answer to a question of this kind.

The thing is, I wouldn’t be terribly surprised if it featured the name of Castiel since his name literally means “the shield of God”.

I’ve tweeted at both of them, but no reply yet.

In the meantime, I’ve been playing in the rabbit hole. This is “Castiel”

for elizabethrobertajones Pronunciation of Enochian letters as per John Dee in Quinti libri Mysteriorum (Sloane MS 3188 folio 94b)  These are for the letters, though, probably not the calls (or keys) themselves, which are where all of the vocabulary is from. I have no reason to believe the letter names are “proper” Enochian pronunciation, since there doesn’t seem to be any indication the calls were delivered in the Angelic Alphabet. For anyone who is more familiar with Enochian magic, Click here for interesting narrative on the reversal of the Holy Table (aka the Table of Practice) a la Casaubon All credit goes to the author of the article

Ooh, thanks. It’s great of you to offer yourself as a resource to this strange fandom which has latched onto your thing when you have no reason to do anything other than roll your eyes at us for butting in on your thing and filling your tag up with spurious talk about fictional angels. :P
