thoughts on kisses

Hee, everyone wants to know how I think they'd kiss!

Well, first of all, even though by this point in the series I think it's canon, and obviously so, that Dean and Cas are in love with each other, it's still a pretty huge if they'll ever physically do anything about it on camera. And it's not because the TPTB are homophobic jerks, because they're not. But up to this point in the story, Dean's relationships have always been about exploring his emotions, while Sam's relationships are about his actions and physicality. That is, over and over again Dean is asked to confront "how does this person make me feel?" while Sam must confront 'what does this person make me do?"

It's a way to play off the themes of the masculine vs. feminine, of internal vs. external, which comes back to who you are vs. who you choose to be, etc. So I think it's no accident that the greatest love of Dean's life has no physical element to it (that we've seen; they may very well be shtupping each other like bunnies outside what we see); it's just the way the writers chose to emphasize Dean's character arc.

And it should be said that love doesn't need physical expression to be justified, or made real, or canon in a story. You can be in love with someone and never once kiss them.

But, all that said, if Dean and Cas do kiss (or more) on screen, I don’t think it will happen in Purgatory. My best bet is there'll be a bunch of “almosts” and “so close” moments, and maybe an emotional declaration or two, but they wouldn’t actually physically seal the deal in Purgatory, at least not in flashback mode, because that would be kind of crappy writing. If it does happen, then it needs to be when it’s the most inconvenient for the characters, and when they’ll actually have to stew around in the consequences of that decision and be forced to make new decisions because of it.  Storytelling 101. Which means the best time to do it would beafterthey’re reunited post-Purgatory.

If it were me? I’d probably make it happen as most first kisses usually do – not as the prelude to sex, or after some grand gesture of love, or even after a particularly great and portentous event; but in some otherwise unremarkable moment, over a beer somewhere or maybe while poring over books, a moment only made remarkable by the fact that these two idiots have finally realized the space between them is too much to handle.

But make no mistake: if and when it does happen, finally, it’ll feel no less than an apocalypse. Good first kisses always do. :)

So, considering that Supernatural often plays pretty loosely with its spells, magic, lore and etc., I’m probably reading too much into this, but in 7.22 and 7.23 it felt like they were pointedly drawing attention to Crowley’s summoning symbol. In the image from the finale (the one with the booze) the shot lingered on the symbol for AGES, forcing us to look at it. It has been pretty strongly hinted that Crowley isn’t a demon (or at least isn’t JUST a demon) and that got me thinking: is this supposed to be some kind of hint or was someone just very proud of their magical looking summoning circle?

Which lead me to wondering: have we ever seen this specific symbol before? And have we ever seen anyone use this symbol to summon Crowley before?

As far as I can tell, the answer is no.

Crowley is summoned in 7.01, but the shot is set up such that we never actually get to see the summoning symbol, just the bowl of herbs. So, I tried looking earlier in the show, Crowley was summoned by Bobby in 6.04 HOWEVER, he doesn’t use the symbol seen in season 7, instead he uses the Sigil of Azazel, otherwise known as the Seal of Saturn. He seems to have added some extra symbols, but that’s about the only difference from the basic symbol. John Winchester used this symbol in 2.01 to summon Azazel, but logically that makes sense.

I tried peeking around to see if the symbol actually appeared in any mystical or spiritual texts, but I couldn’t spot anything. However, it seems strange that they would draw so much attention to the symbol only to have it be completely meaningless? If anyone has any theories or if anyone can identify the circle I would love to hear from you.

Here’s a super rough mock-up for easier seeing.

Hmm. This was the one thing I didn't quite get about the episode, too. Why such a long shot on the symbol?

Or perhaps the relevant fact here is the a full glass of scotch inside the sigil--a hint that Crowley only goes when and where his favorite drink is being offered. After all, we see him drink both Dick and Bobby's booze when he shows up in their places too. (Not that any of the three parties knowingly offer up liquor as a sacrifice, only that it's present at all three summonings.)

If so, that's... kinda godly of him, or at least it lines up nicely with the way Old Gods have been portrayed in the canon. As far back as Scarecrow, the show has underscored that Old Gods need sacrifices to do their work. Usually that takes the form of human sacrifices, but there's no reason they'd all necessarily require it. Some might also take sacrifices in the form of libations, or drink.
