I thought I should answer a common question people are asking. “What if I find one on the beach?” First, check your local laws. Make sure that possessing part of an endangered species is okay where you live, and also verify what species you collected. Aside from that, it’s totally fine! The main purpose of this post was to discourage others from supporting the abalone poaching industry. If you buy an abalone shell, you risk supporting the very business that is leading to their extinction. But if you find one on the beach already empty, it’s the same as finding bones in a forest, or any other shell on the beach. No living creature is using it anymore, so it’s all yours! Doesn’t hurt to thank Mother Earth before taking it, but that’s up to you. Once again, thanks everyone for being cool these past 4 years! :)
