OK so I'm at school, so I'm going to just use an IPA keyboard & write in IPA, because plain text with no diacritics... is difficult to even read. Anyways, the stuff I'm working on is still v WIP, but we have e.g.
/'fɑwɑf hleʃːy'jøɾfe/
"If only they had been able to go often."
probably glosses like:
fɑw-ɑ-f hle-s-ʃy-jøɾ-fe
go-HU-3 POL-PST-can-often-OPT
-shue /ʃy/ "can" might be better glossed as something vaguer like deontic possibility, since I think it's going to be a bit more broad than English. We'll see. It's strictly deontic/situational, too.
I have some ideas about maybe shifting this around etc etc. It's fairly likely I'll add at least one more category of marking on the verb or verb-particle-thing (actually... two categories.), and also fairly likely that the main verb will get another thing by the end of this.
But yeah, Mezhat is getting... very... agglutinative.
... if I set up one of the computers at school w/ a german keyboard will the librarian ppl track me down and kill me?
so it's the first day of classes and i cannot read my syllabuses. like almost at all. they're completely blurry, im sort of freaking out.
text on the computer is still mostly okay but the high-contrast freaking papers they hand out are going to kill me. im screwed. what even is this. the fuck makes it so u cannot read printed text what the fuck
For anyone who has been enjoying PolyGlot, or anyone who would like to get on board, I’m done with the next big build of PolyGlot! This is a HUGE release. It includes both the Translation Window, which assists with translating into your conlang, and the Stats Report, which gives you valuable analysis of your language.
As a quick rundown for the uninitiated, PolyGlot is a language construction toolset that I have been tinkering with for the last few months. I am hoping that it will help people to make more fully fledged and complex conlangs. It is now and will always be free. It is in beta currently, but moving forward, it is guaranteed it will remain compatible with all old PolyGlot files.
Also, PolyGlot is now open source! Please feel free to look through code, modify things for your own tastes, or even make coding suggestions! I want to make this software as high quality as possible, and will credit all coding to contributors!
Homepage: http://Sulmere.tumblr.com/PolyGlot
Please enjoy, and as always, I am open to suggestions, user needs and most of all PLEASE REPORT BUGS! I can only correct bugs that I know about!
testing my verb nesting idea! (... I don't remember the term for this and it's 11 pm so I am going to call it verb nesting, yes)
Does anyone know why I is capitalized (as opposed to any other pronoun?)
"“Graphically, single letters are a problem,” says Charles Bigelow, a type historian and a designer of the Lucida and Wingdings font families. “They look like they broke off from a word or got lost or had some other accident.” When “I” shrunk to a single letter, Bigelow explains, “one little letter had to represent an important word, but it was too wimpy, graphically speaking, to carry the semantic burden, so the scribes made it bigger, which means taller, which means equivalent to a capital.”" -The New York Times (http://www.nytimes.com/2008/08/03/magazine/03wwln-guestsafire-t.html)
my rants to my friends and family about languages and linguistics are highly unappreciated
ohhh, the terminology i was looking for wrt the con sign lang was probably "verbs are a closed class." a very similar-looking thing occurs in Japanese.
... I used to do an adjective/noun word order reshuffle for passives? (i.e. "known bird" vs "knowing bird" was a word order difference) and I could...?
etśesi tsokky kefje hle.
know-AN.NHU-3-3 bird-ERG fish.ABS-DEF FORM
A bird knows the fish.
hle kefje etśes. (?)
FORM fish.ABS-DEF know-AN-3
The fish is known.
And I'd feel super comfortable with it since my sentences are bookended with the tense/aspect/formality/negation particle, which would switch out with the verb. For adjectives, etśe kef would probably be 'known fish' and kef etśe 'knowing fish', so opposite order technically but same head-directionality, I believe. (My motivations for having NAdj be standard are mainly aesthetic, though).
(My English translations are ofc completely ignoring the fact that all of the nouns here may or may or may not be plural bc they're unmarked).
!! I have found a phonotactics database! ... its interface looks eerily familiar, so perhaps I re-found it. Anyways hopefully this will have the info I want.

I propose alle/alloj/allen/allojn for gender neutral pronouns from the german ‘alle’ *note: I’m really basic with esperanto, just thought these pronouns sounded nice because they could be used with alle people *excuse the bad german pun
Ha, that could work! Yeah, the thing about introducing new pronouns is it is a pain to get ppl to recognize them widely, & having to work around all of that for an auxlang seems like a bit much for me. But I have seen discussions about coining pronouns to fix it up!
If Esperanto underwent significant fixes wrt both of the gender issues (the weirdly-gendered nouns and the gendered pronouns) and those became very common/standard then I would certainly give it a look, but I think it's... not super probable? If you want to try then I certanly wish you luck!
Currently removing plural marking from almost everything in Meśät. I suspect this is going to end with plural marking as an optional post- or preposition only available for human or human & animate class nouns, tbqh. 1st person pronouns may be obligatorily marked, though? IDK.
Also considering tightening up the phonotactics? I need to find more examples of natlangs that are somewhere in between Italian and German wrt permitted syllable codas. Korean is one good example, but -- are fricatives in the coda actually less likely than unvoiced stops, then, or...?

i’m so with you, if it were just someone’s side project i wouldn’t bat an eyelash but as an auxlang that anyone’s supposed to take seriously, i am just so annoyed by esperanto lol
Yeahh god it's just... why even.
… Esperanto is nice in theory, but the idea of learning an auxiliary language with obligatory gender marking just seems like such a huge waste of time all-around to me.
Have you seen this: http://www.xibalba.demon.co.uk/jbr/ranto/ ?
Specifically this part http://www.xibalba.demon.co.uk/jbr/ranto/o.html
I hadn't seen those, but there's actually a Wikipedia article about this issue that I have read most of.
It's just... Holy shit, Esperanto. Gendered suffixes are nice and all, if, perhaps, your unsuffixed forms were gender neutral? But, uh, no. And the "fraulo ~ fraulino" from "Fräulein" one just... rly. It looks like the article you linked mentions that as well. Why would he even? "Frau" literally means woman. The word was right there.
It is one thing to be having these sorts of problems while learning e.g. German, where sexism and obligatorily gendered terms are literally baked into the language because of its history, but someone consciously chose to have Esperanto do this and that makes its value as an auxiliary language seem very low to me.
