i wanna tell you guys about my friend ibrahim @aburakhiaibrahim. i met him here on tumblr and we follow each other on instagram. he has been trying for a while to raise funds to keep his family of 28 alive during the genocide, and to evacuate them to a safer place.

currently his family is displaced and living in a school. they're scared. there has been bombing nearby. they're struggling to get necessities like food and water. the kids aren't doing well.

ibrahim has asked me to write a post for him, so i can tell you all about the situation they're in. the family is desperate just for basic necessities. they need $30k CAD; right now they've only got about $6987. this is all they've managed to raise since march, so to say that the campaign is going slowly is a massive understatement.

i know i've been asking a lot lately, especially for donations to my friends in gaza and people i care about. i wish i didn't have to. i wish none of these families were in the situation that they're in. trust me, they wish they didn't have to ask, too. but the reality is that their homeland is not safe for them anymore. they have to do all they can to survive. most of us are currently warm and safe in our homes, in places that haven't seen war. now more than ever, it is important to be aware of what a privilege that is.

so please, i ask you once more, with a lot of hope - please, donate whatever you can. the price of your daily cup of coffee. the cost of your favorite snack. whatever you can afford. i promise you that it means a lot to people like ibrahim and his family. reblog, too. get this fundraiser to as many people as possible. it will reach those it is meant to reach.

Personally, I’m making time to attend as many city council meetings as I can. Anything open to the public. My plan is to ask questions and share my experiences.

If people want to understand, I’ll be part of that learning. Maybe I’ll get lucky and I’ll learn too. If it’s infuriating, if it’s hard, if it’s like pulling teeth, I still want to be part of that process.

I won’t go unheard. I won’t give up. I believe in creating the community we want to live in and the first step is showing up in whatever way we have to in order to be heard.

and a fun fact about why some animals look like this as babies is that many newly born/hatched animals have their adult legs with baby bodies! im not sure if this is the case with the pukeko, but they sure look silly

these guys are native to new zealand!

Baby puks don't have adult legs (you're thinking of foals with adult length leg bones lol) - they are much much smaller than adults, they're like little black cotton balls when they hatch! They do have great big legs and feet tho for sure, because they're marsh birds and it helps them navigate marshy swampy terrains without sinking! you can see them doing it in the photos infact

other fun pukeko facts:

they're very smart and observant, ive done research around them and the bastards will pull the cards out of tracking tunnels to eat the bait like parrots, and recognise the cars of people who caught them for research so those people had to park somewhere else entirely and sneak in

they use their giant feet as hands. i know someone who watched one pull veges out of his garden with one foot, taste it, dislike it, and toss it away over its shoulder. brutal

they have communal childcare in little family groups

they're pretty shithouse at both flying and judging perches, i think everyone who's been around them has seen them land on bushes and then slowly sink to the ground as the thin branches gave way under their weight

one time in discussion about their competitiveness in our bird of the year competition i heard them described as the comic sans of birds and ... yeah. i can't argue with that lol except for when they chop up ducklings to feed to their children
