“The only Hebrew version of the perennially popular Arthurian legends was written in northern Italy in 1279. […] The 13th-century Italian Jewish translator’s literary methods are as fascinating as are the Arthurian stories in Hebrew dress. The scribe not only translates from Italian, [..] he also changed and Judaized the story. The scribe’s manner of Judaization is evident at the outset of the romance; the apology itself is filled with terms from a familiar Jewish world. Instrumental to the Judaization of the Arthurian romance are the scribe’s choice of plot (the seduction of Igerne by the king, with its parallels to the David-Bath-Sheba story), additions and omissions, use of language, and treatment of certain passages to stress Jewish ideas. For instance, the feast at which Uther meets Igerne is described in the Old French sources as a Christmas feast. In the Hebrew version, the statement “Then the king made a great feast for all the people and all the princes” (based on Esth. 2:18) conveys the aura of a Purim feast. Another example of such transference of concepts occurs when the translator takes the talmudic word tamḥui (“a charity bowl from which food was distributed to the needy”), with its uniquely Jewish associations, to describe the grail, an overtly Christian symbol. The constant use of well-known biblical phrases reminds the reader of religious literature and produces the effect of biblical scenes in the midst of the Arthurian narrative. In this fashion, then, the text and the language interact in polyphonic fashion.”

HOLY SHIT HOLY SHIT HOLY SHIT HOLY SHIT

Holy heck, I considered myself something of a King Arthur buff and I had no idea about this!  Does this mean after all this time I can imagine a Jewish round table?

hey i found a recent book with a translation of the text & a chunk of it is even up on google books

Image of Tsar Nicholas II found beneath portrait of Vladimir Lenin

A portrait of Tsar Nicholas II was discovered during the restoration of a full-size painting of the 1917 October Revolution leader Vladimir Lenin. The image was “hidden” for the last 90 years beneath water-soluble paint on the back of the canvas used by Soviet artist Vladislav Izmailovich for Lenin’s portrait.
The discovery was made by restorers from the Stieglitz Art and Industry Academy in St. Petersburg, where the portrait has been on loan from the Russian Museum for restoration since 2013. The recovered works of the two artists will be presented at the St. Petersburg Museum of Applied Arts on November 30, 2016.
“The large-scale double-sided portrait, painted by different artists under different political regimes, is a unique phenomenon that has no historical parallels,” the Academy’s press service told RBTH.
The history of the “double” portrait began in 1896, when artist Ilya Galkin, who portrayed the royal family many times, created a large-scale (9’ x 6’) ceremonial portrait of Tsar Nicholas II. The painting was commissioned in the year of the monarch’s coronation for the assembly hall of the Merchant Society’s Petrovsky Trade and Commercial School.
After the 1917 revolution, the trade school building was converted into a regular school, and in 1924, after Lenin’s death, experts speculate that Vladislav Izmailovich covered the portrait of the tsar with several layers of paint and then illustrated the revolutionary leader on the back.
Lenin, standing on a pavement against the background of the Admiralty, was hung in the same place in the assembly hall. The painting hung there for nearly a century, until the school’s administration decided to send the portrait, which was damaged during the Soviet era, for restoration.
“At the bottom of the canvas, numerous small holes were discovered, presumably marks made with bayonets during the revolution,” the Academy’s press service said.
“It is noteworthy that an X-ray examination of the canvas found that the heads of Lenin and the emperor are almost in the same place.”

wait that black wigs thing for Egypt was that a thing? I was under the impression that was just their hair...

It’s actually both. Egyptians would keep their hair short and wear wigs to avoid lice/have an immaculate hairstyle for all occasions. Of course, there were people who couldn’t afford this so copied the wig styles using their own hair or just kept it short.

Some wig examples, though there are not many since wigs are a rare find:

I know my University’s Museum has a wig in it’s collection, but unfortunately I don’t have a photo of that. I have handled that one and I know it smells….

what to do after a bad day - well, it’s time for another installment of Les Amis des Silly Things!

Here we have les amis des petit-déjeuners - breakfasts! Now, breakfast foods are a hugely cultural thing, and this bunch is pretty mixed. My own culture mixes French, English and American foods, so this is what this is all about.

“Andrey Pavlov’s photography has been called many things, but whether it was “fake” or “photoshoped” they all pretty much suggested the same thing. And you can’t really blame people for thinking that while looking at his stunning photos. Let’s face it, it’s hard to believe anyone can train ants to pose for the camera like his subjects seem to do. But the truth is, the Russian photographer has indeed found a way to do just that. Although staged, believe it or not, Pavlov’s photography uses live characters! And here’s how he does it: as I mentioned above, he spent a lot of time studying ants, and he learned that they all follow a very specific path when they’re working. So all he has to do is find them, put the props right on their trail, set up some flash backgrouns and light reflectors, and just stand on the sidelines photographing the ants.

“But how does someone train ants to do stuff like what we see in Andrey’s photos? He says it’s a proven fact that ants are very fast learners. It’s enough to grab the attention of just one member of the community, convince it to perform a trick, and the others will soon follow suit. He uses all kinds of things to attract the insects, from  shiny coins, to his own fingers. It took him about three years to understand and get in touch with the tiny creatures, but now he knows just how to deal with them. He builds all the props himself in the several months he dedicates to his hobby. That’s right, every year, from May to October, Andrey Pavlov moves to a cottage in the countryside, where he likes to photograph red forest ants.”
