Iris and Lois were by no means strangers but had not spoken to each other, apart from trivial work talk. Both were trying to survive in a male-dominated field where women's stories are not taken as seriously. When Iris first began working for Central City Picture News, most of her ideas were rejected. It has improved over the last couple of years but not enough.
