which is wild because if you ask a German person where German people are from they will tell you "Deutschland" or dutch land

got curious and did a little research! these are called 'demonyms' btw - "ian" is the Latin demonym, which gets shortened to 'an' if it sounds better. 'if it sounds better' is like 99% of why these get used over others- if you say "american" really quickly in conversation it comes out as " 'merkan" but "canadan" comes out as "can'n'n" which sucks hard, thus the full -ian. latin's important to english[citation needed] so this one gets used as the default more or less - "ese" is actually an italian demonym! these get used a lot for asian and central/south american countries cuz of sons of bitches like marco polo and columbus. not sure why portugals in this club - "ish" comes from the german "itch," which also makes sense due to english being a largely germanic language. yeah, german-IC.

-"ic" is also germanic. perhaps unsurprisingly given that im not calling it germanish. this basically only gets used for nations that end with -land, icelanders are icelandic, etc.

literally anytime you see english being a fuckin nightmare language, remember that people in england spoke what we call old english until the french conquered 'em in 1066 and started speaking anglo-norman (a french dialect), leaving old english mostly spoken at home. combine that with latin being the main written language in britain and you get a really fucked up and sick language breathing really hard and coughing while germans gently and confidently pour printing presses into its mouth
