on topic, i seriouslythink the toriel fight is the best fight in undertale and not only that but one of the best fights in RPG’s as a whole

thematically, its an amazing fight about a woman who has watched 7 separate children have to die after falling into the underground, and all she wants to do is protect them from a man who she doesn’t trust anymore. but when this one wants to leave, she cant do anything to change their mind, and has to fight them.

but she doesnt want to. when you get to low health, her attacks specifically swerve around your soul, and if you die intentionally, she has this terrible shocked expression on her face. its that little attention to detail that really shows you that this game is going to be really special

then theres how she ties into the mechanics of the game. your first time through, if you know barely anything about the game, you spare everything by acting with it and waiting until their name turns gold to spare it. but toriel is different. nothing you do will help you spare her, and some players will see it as having no other choice but to kill her (which i did) and it makes you feel TERRIBLE. and as you go through the game, you slowly figure out that every single other boss could be spared.

once you get to the end, sans tells you that you fucked up, and you understand that she could’ve been saved, then, after asgore, you fight flowey, and at that point, when flowey’s on his last legs, you either fight or spare him. at that point, you hit spare over and over, because thats what the game has taught you. of course, you cant get true pacifist yet.

when you go back in to get true pacifist, the way to spare toriel is to press spare over and over again. just like flowey.

i killed her the first time then reloaded the save before the fight because i felt awful, and figured it out the second time. Then after exiting the ruins Flowey popped up to call me out for killing her and undoing it, which was a pretty big “oh shit” moment.

The song itself is the entire thesis of the game in microcosm. “Heartache” begins in very dated, simple chip tune that you would expect from a game that looks like Undertale. It sounds so tinny, like the speakers can’t even handle the dated audio. THEN it explodes into full instrumentals and reveals what lies under the surface is this florid depth of emotion. It’s a song that can’t be contained, it’s a story bursting from its confines. It’s perfect. Tobias Radiation Fox is a genius.
