How much canon info is there about Highever? I haven't been able to find much apart from: It has an alienage, is by the coast and makes a signature kind of cloth (wool industry?). How big is the city? Is it near/around Castle Cousland? Does it have a harbour? How big is the alienage and what is it like?

Avatar

(Alright, for you I’m going to make this into an official lore post, because this is actually small and specific).

Disclaimer: All of this is completely canonical knowledge. Nothing headcanoned, there are sources for it and I’ve gathered from every source that I could. This includes: Codice (Highever, Construction Report: Brickmarks, ), Dragon Age Origins Ultimate/Collector’s Edition Prima Guide, Dragon AGE Core Rulebook. Nothing is headcanon and nothing is taken from an unreliable sources (i.e. Wikipedia).

 Highever

Location

Highever is a Teyrnir in northern Thedas, one of the few that set on the Coastlands. It sets on the coast of the Waking Sea, west of Amaranthine, across the sea from Kirkwall and the Vimmark Mountains, and North of The Bannorn.

In the very center of the Highever Teyrnir, is Harper’s Ford, this area used to belong to the Howes of Amaranthine. However, during the Orlesian Occupation, Tarleton Howe sided with the Orlesians, Harper’s Ford was marched upon by the Couslands and Howe hung.

Highever is the name of a village in the Teyrnir along the coast, as well as being the name of the Teyrnir (all lands, holdings, and bannorns within in area).

Castle Cousland is located in the Highever Teyrnir, the exact location is unknown.

Highever possesses an Alienage, though the location of it is unknown.

There was a Silver Temple in Highever where Andraste’s Ashes were first held, before being moved to a secret location. Whether the Temple still stands in unknown.

History

In -165 Ancient, Andraste’s “sons” (Maferath’s sons were adopted by Andraste, though many tried to claim to be her birth son in order to earn leadership of the Alamarri tribes) sought to steal Andraste’s ashes from Highever’s Silver Temple and strengthen their claim to Chief of the Alamarri. The ashes were moved to Haven, but the location was never revealed and eventually lost.

Castle Highever, eventually known as Castle Cousland, was built in the Divine Age and was considered no more than an outpost to the Amaranthine Bannorn. The oupost was held by the cousins of the Howes, the Elstans until the Tower Age.

In the Age of Towers, Bann Conobar Elstan was murdered by his wife, Flemeth, leaving no heir behind. Cononbar’s Captain, Sarim Cousland, stepped up and took the land instead.

The Couslands would declare themselves an independent Bannorn from Amaranthine and start a 30 year war, until Highever was freed and owned southwest Amaranthine as well.

It wasn’t until the Black Age that Highever would be named a Teynir under Haelia Cousland, who would unite the nearby lords against the werewolves and earn herself the title along with their fealty.

4:80 Black, Orlais tried to take Highever in hopes to conquer Ferelden, in the first Orlesian Invasion. They would use Highever to supply their troops by sea. However, Redcliffe stood strong against the Invasion and Orlesian was forced to retreat, unable to pass into Highever.

During the Exalted Age, Eletha Cousland would fight Ferelden’s future king, Calenhad, to remain independent. She would lose, but Highever would remain one of two Teynirs and Eletha would remain their teyrna.

However, in the Dragon  Age, the Couslands would be betrayed and Castle Cousland would be stormed by Arl Howes forces, the Cousland family almost completely wiped out. The only to survive would Fergus Cousland, who would be lost in the Korcari Wilds until after the Fifth Blight ended.

(Conditional: The youngest Cousland would also survive the attack and go on to become a Grey Warden, swearing vengeance on Howe.)

Highever would be relinquished after Howe’s death by the Warden and returned to the Couslands.

Fergus Cousland is the current Teyrn of Highever.

GreedFall 2 | Post Nacon Connect Spiders Live

Some important highlights:

  • We play as a native person of Tír Fradí, kidnapped and forcibly taken to the mainland continent of Gacane
  • There will be new factions introduced, as well as places we didn't learn about in the first game
  • We get party control!! Not turn-based combat, but we get more tactical control over our character and three companions. This was implemented from listening to player feedback from the first game
  • The world itself will be bigger, and both exploration and narrative are at the forefront of the experience
  • Early Access is happening! It is really important to the development team so they can gain feedback on how they're doing with a lot of big, new changes
  • Early Access will ONLY be available on Steam, though the full game will launch on consoles
  • There will be several phases of EA. The initial EA launch phase will allow access to the entire beginning of the game
  • Around 1/4 of the game may be available upon EA release
  • There will be updates at regular intervals, but save files WILL NOT be compatible between updates
  • This is their current roadmap of EA release
  • Character, skill set and talents will still be customisable!!
  • More small quests for each region will be implemented to add depth of gameplay and aid in telling the main story
  • The dev team REALLY wants valuable and constructive feedback for both story and gameplay elements while they are still in EA
  • Crafting systems will be included again, but not in EA
  • The team thinks of the game not as a sequel or prequel but as a new story set within the same world
  • There will be some (few) characters that we know from the first GreedFall, and perhaps some little clues and easter eggs to other characters we know
  • A camera mode may (hopefully!) be available in the full game
  • There is no final release date as of now (March, 2024)
  • Price at EA will be lower than full release price, but publishers do not have a set price yet
  • There will be more companion options AND romance options! 😍
  • There will be further announcements about gameplay coming as EA gets closer
  • Finally, making a second GreedFall game was easier for the team because of the communication they had with the community! Spiders Games and the devs really love the GreedFall world, and they appreciate how much we love it too ❤️

☆ Some more details about Greedfall 2. Please keep in mind that this came from the livestream I've tuned into.

  • We will not be getting two companions to follow us but we'll have a party of 4. We'll be controlling them, but it is uncertain if we'll be controlling them at once or controlling them individual.
  • More exploration. So, more and bigger regions to explore. More quests to do. Also more skills to get and learn from each region we'll explore.
  • We'll be staying on the island first before we'll be going to the other places.
  • More romances, but for now, it is unknown how many.
  • Our beloved and new protagonist is coming from a clan we never seen in the first game but one of the important clans.
  • More factions, maybe?? They have hinted at it.
  • Early access is available on stream because they will be polishing the game by getting the fanbase's feedback. The saves on the early access will not be transferring to the full game.

Today in "dumb conversations that are dumb but let me practice characters' voices," have a mid-ME2 fic on the mental gymnastics of post-Horizon Shenko.

“So Shep, that picture on your desk,” Kasumi says as the ground crew recovers in the cargo bay from boarding the ‘abandoned’ Collector ship. “That’s the guy from Horizon, right?”

Odd choice of topics, but conversation tends to get odd after rough missions. Everyone is looking for a distraction from whatever fresh horror they witnessed.

Shepard stiffens. “That’s Kaidan, yeah. Why do you ask?”

“Just wondering why you have a picture of your ex-boyfriend on prominent display, that’s all.”

Shepard blinks. “Kaidan’s not my ex. We’re still together.”

Now it’s Miranda who’s blinking while her brain stops working.

your bored-at-work Mass Effect thought of the day:

The way Krogans make fun of humans on the battlefield ought to be a lot more indulgent sounding than it is. Next to Krogans, humans are probably one of the most warlike races in the galaxy.

“But,” you say “what about the Turians. They’ve got a whole government-religion thing around war.”

No they have a whole government-religion thing around the military which is totally different. They do the whole conquering, compulsive-serving thing, squad mentality, which is great during a war but I wouldn’t call that being warlike. They’re too obsessed with rules and regimentation as a general, like. Thing. They’re about that stuff.

Humans, however, are ready to throw down. They’ll meet you in front of the Krogan memorial statue for an ass kicking. They’re ready to pull hair over someone sliding into their partner’s dms. They’re ready to fuckin go

If Krogans are like mastiffs, bred for war and muscle, humans are those little yappy dogs who are ready to fling themselves into a fight without regard to life or limb and are fully convinced that they’re Big and the Boss. Krogans should absolutely complain about how squishy we are but I’m begging u, bioware, let it be a fond complaint. I want to hear a krogan companion watch me biotic charge myself into a knot of enemies and yell “Look at ‘er go! Atta girl!” and then admonish me to remember my armor more often.

wip wednesday

this one’s been in folders for awhile, but i’m fiddling with it to better suit the details of Aedan’s story. Canon places this mission right before the date at Apollo’s but I’ve moved it because the after mission chat Shepard and Kaidan have is one they need to have *after* they’ve completely come to accord.  o-o-o-o-o

Shepard didn’t even blink as the scientist stumbled past her with a pistol in his shaking hand.  She didn’t break stride when the gunshot went off behind them.  Kaidan stuttered to a stop but Garrus’ hand on his elbow kept him moving forward.  “If she doesn’t explain I will, but not here.” His rumble was low and the mandibles were tense and Kaidan lengthened his stride to keep up.

She stopped to reassure a grieving scientist.  She spoke to Dr. Cole.  The two women chivvied Taylor past them to the med bay when he stopped to chat.

Kaidan was trying not to hover.  She and Taylor were discussing the old days and he’s going over a manifest making sure there wasn’t anything valuable here they’d missed loading up, trying to ignore the implications of the research titles on the pads he kept finding.  Garrus was showing one of the scientists how to clear the heat sink on the older Carnifex but he kept Shepard in his line of sight. As if she’d strayed onto a battlefield and he’s her only backup. So he wasn’t eavesdropping.

Except he absolutely was.

“You need to let me explain about Archer, Shepard.”

“Archer? That asshole from Project Overlord?” She sounded confused, “What about him?”

Jacob glanced back in the direction they’d come from and he hesitated before he spoke “He’s…he was on the landing when I came up.  Before you finished talking with Brynn.”

She twitched a shoulder and wrinkled her nose as if she’d bitten into a sour fruit. “Didn’t see him,” It dawned on Kaidan exactly who the guy had been. “Don’t particularly want to. You let that bastard come on your break for freedom?  Jesus, Taylor.  I’d lay odds that’s your leak.”

“He and Brynn worked together a few years ago, she said he’d clearly been pushed by the Illusive Man to do things he’d never have done.” He glanced around. “I wonder where he got to?”

“His brother’s doing great, by the way.  Rescued him and Jack and some kids from Grissom right after Earth went.”

Jacob stopped to stare, his chin dropping in surprise. “Our Jack? Jack was on Grissom?”

“Sure was.  Teaching, believe it or not. Got a whole line of little ducks tearing shit apart”

“I do not believe it.  Come on.”

“God’s truth.” Kaidan is trying to place where he’s heard her use that voice.  It isn’t the good face in front of the brass but it isn’t…tossing a ball around with your buddy, either.  There’s something not quite friendly, there.

Shepard’s moved on, “So you and Dr. Cole, huh?”

The guy went absolutely starry eyed and Kaidan hid a smile.  He might have seen that look in his mirror once or twice. “Brynn’s amazing.  Never thought I’d be the kind to settle down but sometimes it just hits you.”

“That’s true.  Sometimes it does.” She glanced his direction but he kept his head down, pretending to not see the tiny smile flickering across her lips.

Taylor scoffed, “Oh, come on, Shepard. We both know the Normandy is your only true love.  No one’s competing with your ship.”

She snorted with a wave of her hand, “Oh, fuck off, Taylor.” And it was just soldiers talking shit but Kaidan had never heard her use that voice outside of a Council chamber.

Taylor laughed and then grabbed his gut, regretting it. She looked up to quarter the room, gauging the scientists’ progress on packing and her expression was completely blank, from her lips up. Grey eyes like arctic lakes. Jacob thought they were friends.  Commander Shepard thought he was a competent squad member, but it suited her to keep him friendly.

Kaidan shifted and her hyperawareness pulled those eyes towards his movement. The absolute zero thawed and she sent him that crooked smile she kept, just for him. “Hey, Major. Let’s get up and check those guns.  I want to get these folks off this rock before the next wave.”

Tell me about why you love Anderson so much!!!

Avatar

boy howdy, thank you for this opportunity, and here we go

That has been the million-dollar question for several months. I will go ahead and say that most of it is based on my personal interpretation of his character, which could be wildly off-base! But it’s what I see and what I love about him

1) Starting us off with an objective fact: Anderson gave the Normandy over to Shepard and never once complained about it, at least to Shepard. So, why does that matter to me? Because Anderson earned the Normandy. He’s already been screwed over by Saren and had his shot at being the first human Spectre pulled out from under him. He earned his spot as the Captain of the Normandy, and it should have been his for so much longer. But the moment it became clear the galaxy was better off if he passed it over? He did so, no fuss. And then. Fuck, I’m literally getting emotional just sitting here typing it. Traynor tells us in ME3 that Anderson was planning to use the Normandy as his mobile command center. I could go on for ages about what I think could be going on in his head during that time and why he makes that decision, but forget the “whys,” I’m sure some part of him had to be excited about it. At least a little bit. We get to hear in his notes in the Citadel DLC how much he loved the Normandy, can you imagine not being at least a little bit excited about getting to go back to the ship you had to pass off after commanding it for, what, weeks? But then the Reapers hit, and Anderson’s very first response is to find Shepard, put them on the Normandy, and send it the hell off Earth.

He gave it over again. Because the galaxy was better off.

So, I guess to summarize point 1: Anderson had a lot of what he earned taken away from him, and gave away even more. He put the needs of the galaxy over anything he personally wanted, and did so repeatedly, with such grace and humility. The selflessness he exhibits (let’s just not even go near him opting to stay on Earth, I need to be able to breathe) is something I deeply admire and honestly want to emulate

2) This one strays even further from the objective, but regardless point 2 is: I see Anderson as someone who is very good at reading people, and who very much understands the affect he has on people. There’s a lot of semi-related threads that tie into this, but I'll focus on two. One is the Citadel DLC, because that entire conversation fucks me up. Like, it is so abundantly clear that Anderson expects he's not going to live long enough to ever see that apartment again. I mean, "loose ends?" But he puts the emphasis on wanting to stay on Earth, because giving off too much of a "I'm definitely going to die here" vibe during that conversation would totally defeat the purpose of getting Shepard to feel relaxed and comfortable in his old apartment. (((ALSO, SIDE NOTE, HE GAVE HIS APARTMENT TO SHEPARD. JUST. FUCK))) I just feel like there's so much awareness of what Shepard needs and how to convince them in that scene.

But fuck. Fuck, there’s this one single moment in ME3 that I’m probably blowing WAAAAAYYY out of proportion, but to me it encapsulates the very essence of who I see Anderson as and everything I love about him, and it’s this line:

I assume by now you’ve wiped the galaxy clean of Reapers, and we can all come up for air?

First off, props to Keith David; as is usually the case with animated characters, I probably would not love Anderson half as much without the performance he gives. And particularly what he does with this line. Obviously, there’s the joke, trying to make light of the situation. Makes sense that he would use obviously overblown confidence to try and boost Shepard’s mood. But in his voice, there’s that crack. That little slip of exhaustion and desperation, and it shows just how much Anderson is keeping a lid on. It shows how much he understands people and how much he understands the effect he has. Because seeing him break would break so many people, including Shepard, and fuck I have a whole little thing around it in my wip draft because I just cannot get over it no matter how hard I try.

So tl;dr on point 2: Anderson can recognize how he impacts people and measures his actions and words very carefully to make sure he's building the people under him up at every opportunity.

3) He’s just a total fucking badass. Facts. He’s the first N7, was lined up to be the first human Spectre, was the first Captain of the Normandy, and led the Resistance on earth during the goddamn Reaper war. All of that is enough to make me love him as it is, but there’s also the fact that he’s older. Somewhere there’s a number on how long humans live during the events of ME; I don’t remember what it is and it goes against everything I stand for to go look it up. I do know Anderson is around 50. I'm sure that, based on medical improvements, the implication is supposed to be that human bodies are "younger" longer and don't break down as quickly. But I feel like there are a lot of moments consistently through the trilogy that intentionally paint him as an “older” man, someone who is definitely past their physical prime. I freely admit that at this point I’m probably projecting, because I’m not quite 30 and have so much chronic pain, but still. Even with medi-gel and all the advancements, I can't imagine someone who's been in the field for 20 years doesn't have some kind of injury or pain. But you never once see Anderson hesitate to throw himself into the fight.

((can we. I'm sorry I wasn't gonna talk about this. because I'm a MESS over it. but can we talk about how Anderson was also beat to hell, on the ground in front of the London beam, and saw Shepard go up, and pulled himself up and followed as well?? That moment kills me with Shepard, and it kills me even more to know ANDERSON DID IT TOO. he REFUSED to let the weight of the universe sit on Shepard alone RIGHT UP UNTIL THE MOMENT HE DIED. WHO ELSE. it's also in my wip draft because I CAN'T))

4) This spun out of point 3, but I think it's its own thing. You never see him content to step back and lead from afar. He spends a couple years on the Citadel as either a Councilor or advisor, but when you talk to him about it, it's clear he doesn't enjoy it. He understands the importance, but he wants to be out there doing. When the Reapers hit, he could have hopped on the Normandy with Shepard and done the distant Admiral thing, where he leads but spends minimal time in the direct line of fire. But he doesn't. I honestly don't think the possibility that he could not stay on earth even entered his head. He leads from the front, by example, looking out for the people under him, and I fucking love that.

So, in sum: Anderson is a selfless, perceptive badass who makes an incredible leader because he'd throw himself on the grenade faster than just about anyone, and because he spends all his energy trying to make things right and build people up. Literally, what is not to love about any of that

thanks for coming to my TED Talk
