The very definitions of everyday heroes
We need more of this hero compassion

love seeing parents support their kids being unconventional I saw some suburban looking soccer mom at the store today pointing out halloween decorations to her super goth looking teenage daughter and being like “ooh these lights would look good in your room!” and my heart melted
The greatest tragedy of Among Us is making friends and then accidentally disconnecting before you get to say goodbye
I just... I wound up hosting for a bit, and a player by the name “Dad of 3” came in to join my game
He was... well. Clueless is an understatement. When I say he has no idea what was going on, I mean the second round he was in he SLAMMED the alarm button and said “my screen said imposter what does that mean”
“It means you’re the bad guy this time, dad,” We explained. “But next time try and keep it secret, okay?”
“Okay”
The next round, he killed another player right in front of me and immediately self-reported.
“I got my first kill,” he said.
“Good job, dad!” we all replied. “You’re getting it”
He was so proud, next round, when he helped us catch the killer. And we were proud for him. He was trying so hard.
His kids showed him the game, he said — “Look dad a meme” — so he was playing it for them.
“What’s sus” he had to ask. “Is it inappropriate?” “No dad. It’s short for suspicious, because suspicious is a lot to type.” “What’s gg?” “It means good game” “ok. Thank u. gg”
Two rounds later, he slammed the alarm again. “My map looks different,” he said. “There are buttons on it”
“That means you’re the bad guy again, dad. You push them to sabotage us. Try it out”
We spent that round watching Dad of 3 gleefully pop in and out of vents at random and press all the buttons just to see what they did
“Have you killed anyone yet dad?” “No. It feels strange.” “It’s okay. It’s just a game. You can kill us if you want to practice.”
He was trying so hard. I don’t know if he’d ever even played a video game before, but he was trying so hard to understand this thing his kids enjoyed, and my little group of strangers was doing our best to help him get there.
I’m so proud of that random father’s effort, and I’m proud of all the other players who were so willing to help him learn.
Then out of nowhere he was gone. Mid-round, Dad of 3 vanished to a bad connection, and I’m legitimately sad. I’d hoped we’d get the chance to play a round for real, and I’d have liked the chance to wish him luck and say goodbye.
But since I can’t do that, I’m throwing this into the void: I hope you have a nice time, Dad of 3, and I hope we were able to help you learn so you can have fun with your kids.
Good luck out there, buddy.
Daybreak says hello.
An Ongoing Daily List of Good Shit Because I’m Tired of All The Corona Talk:
- Australia is no longer on fire
- U-Haul is offering free 30 day storage for displaced college students and discounted rates on moving services
- The second person in the world was just cured of HIV!
- There’s going to be a new Dr. Seuss book this fall, published from a manuscript he wrote that was discovered 21 years after his death
- Student loan payments are being halted with no interest until the pandemic clears
- A zoo in Indiana recently announced the birth of two Chacoan Peccaries, an animal that is currently endangered (and also adorable)
- On that train, two cheetah cubs were recently born in an Ohio zoo via vitro fertilization, which could seriously boost efforts to help endangered species survive
- One more about animals - a komodo dragon in a Tennessee zoo just gave birth without male involvement! Which isn’t something new, but it is rare and cool.
- The state of Virginia has banned conversion therapy for minors recently, and is the first Southern state to do so
- Scotland has created the worlds first Carbon Positive Gin made from peas instead of wheat, which reduces the carbon footprint created by normal gin making. Without wheat….it might also be a gluten free alternative (not certain on that one, you’d have to reach out to the creators). You can buy it here
- The worlds first 3D printed houses were just created in Mexico, with the hopes to combat homelessness. They are designed to withstand seismic activity and come with two bedrooms, a living room, kitchen, and bathroom.
- Disneyland is donating all acceptable food to food banks in Orange County during their closure
- The Olympic Games are hoping to become “climate positive” by the year 2030, and by next year they plan to start planting an “Olympic Forest” in Africa in an effort to combat desertification
Hopefully I can add more day to day, but even the small stuff makes you smile sometimes. Yesterday at my coffee shop, a woman tipped me five dollars because, and I quote, “Just because there’s a virus doesn’t mean I can’t tip you for my coffee.”
The small shit matters as much as the big shit. Good luck, try to look at the good and also try and DO some good, and wash your hands.
Today’s list (3/15/2020):
- Cleveland Clinic has found a way to make the Corona Virus test go from a 5+ day waiting time for results down to 8 hours, which helps speed up treatment and quarantine and slows the spread of the virus
- You’ve definitely heard about this one, but citizens in Italy (including famous opera singers) have been singing with and playing music with each other during their quarantine
- Hundreds of local restaurants (and some chain restaurants) are offering free meals for kids who rely on school lunches as their primary source of nutrition.
- On this note, hundreds of teachers across the country are pulling from their pantries to make their less fortunate kids care packages (I know, they shouldn’t have to, but they are, so let’s celebrate the kindness)
- Students of a school in Pembroke got together for the 13th year in a row to shave their heads for cancer research, earning more than 100,000 dollars
Feel free to add your own personal ones!
Day 3 (3/16/2020):
- Woolworths has dedicated a set period of time for letting only elderly clients shop so they can stock up on supplies with less risk of catching covid19
- A customer at a bar in Columbus tipped the staff $2500 on a $30 bill because of the shutdown of in house service for all bars and restaurants in Ohio, which will severely impact servers wages and tips
- The last patient with Ebola in the Democratic Republic of the Congo was just released with a full bill of health
- Scholastic is offering free courses for kids stuck at home during school closings
- Reporters Without Borders have opened an uncensored library…..in MINECRAFT. In countries where a lot of books or articles are banned, Minecraft is still available, and they have made these books and articles readable through the platform. You can download it here
- Today is National Panda Day!!!!! Here’s a picture of a Floof Panda looking wistfully to their left:
- Michael Symon is hosting free online cooking videos during the Corona Virus on Facebook
- Ballet Nova Center for Dance is live streaming classes for all levels (beginner adult included!) on Facebook for the next week for anyone who might be interested in learning
- Uber Eats is waiving the delivery fee for all local businesses so that you can keep supporting your mom and pop shops without risking getting sick or getting others sick. They’re also offering contactless deliveries, giving affected drivers financial aid, and are donating meals to first responders and healthcare workers in the US and Canada
Its a struggle y'all, but there’s good shit happening out there. Keep trucking, tip your delivery drivers and servers because they’re making nothing now, and stay inside unless you absolutely can’t. And please remember to wash your hands.

More uplifting news during this outbreak ♥️
Good news amidst all this chaos
A timely reminder that there are good people in the world. They were not at my local supermarket this morning.
I needed this after hearing that czech government is going to heavily rely on all people having a good conscience to stop the spreading of COVID-19 here in Czech republic. Wish I could be as optimistic as our government sometimes...
The beautiful thing about the human race is that when you put us under pressure, ordinary people often show themselves to be diamonds.
Cis people who don't know much about gender stuff but are genuinely trying to be respectful are so cute
Today a girl in class told me I look pretty and she immediately froze and said "wait no. Handsome? Good, you look good" and I'm like Vanesa I would kill for you
Genuinely tho like. Trans people notice when you put in the effort. When you correct yourself after misgendering us, we notice. When you put thought into the language you use for us, we notice. Just basic consideration and respect is surprisingly rare from anyone who's not a close friend, so when you put like, any thought at all into how to respect our identity, we notice.
I know we're not supposed to reward people for doing shit that should be the standard, but it isn't the standard right now, and if we don't acknowledge people who are getting shit right then the standard isnt ever gonna change. So from the bottom of my heart, to all the cis people out there putting genuine effort into helping the trans people in your life feel comfortable and respected, thank you.
Never will these not be cute.
One of my all time favourite things I’ve seen tumblr
we shortly interrupt your regular shitposting program with these reptiles
I came out to my mom as non-binary, and she was asking me about whether or not I wanted to change my name, and I was telling her about how a common joke for non-binary people is that we name ourselves nouns and trees
But here’s the thing
I forgot to account for the fact that my mom is a huge nature nerd
So I came home from school this afternoon to my mom with a list of different trees and bird names that she thinks I should name myself
Here are some highlights:
- Devil’s walking stick
- Titmouse
- Cardinal (I’m not apposed to this one)
- Jay
- Peregrine
- Pawpaw
- Pileated woodpecker
- Birch
- Maple
- Cypress (legit considering this one)
- Dogwood
She legitimately thinks these are good names and she also came to the realization that a) she should’ve given all her kids gender-neutral names. She wishes she’d given in to her inner hippie and named us things like blue, moon, river, ocean, and sky.
and B) she wants to now give all of her kids tree/bird nicknames. She followed my sister around for an hour asking if she wanted to be named oak or spruce.
I love her and I’m so glad she’s so supportive, but this is not what I thought the reception to me coming out was going to be
This made my day 💖
imma reblog this again just because 36 followers was gone after this post, ain’t nobody gonna judge them but god so get your racist ass outta here

I feel so bad but i’m just sitting here cackling as my bestie is sending me increasingly exasperated texts about her students’ first research paper (1 page long lol). Like. Despite having deadlines for each stage of research and writing, one kid emailed her at 7:45 pm for the final 10 pm deadline with a question about “resurch.” Multiple kids have plagiarized their papers, one of whom didn’t even bother changing the font or the color of the sections he copied and pasted. One girl just cited a fucking fanfiction story as one of her sources.
Middle schoolers are so precious, but god they can be so stupid too. Darling children lol
update: fanfiction girl may have put it in the works cited but didn’t even bother to put quotation marks in as she just copied and pasted two full pages of a fanfiction into her paper. every little additional detail i learn about these papers just gets worse lol
she sent me the link of the story she copied and pasted. it is…not good. it’s not even a good story. why did she steal it? god this entire sordid tale is so baffling. is it possible that this child has genuinely mistaken bad self-insert fanfiction for legitimate greek mythology? the world may never know
“Also, fanfiction.net is a community of modern fiction writers, and is not a credible source for your research papers.” - an actual sentence my friend just had to write to her students. i’m dying this is incredible lol
“Although the Trojan horse is something we all think is real, it’s actually classified as a myth.” oh you sweet summer child
“I used this video thing to find out what the roman house you can find out.” what does this even mean lol
god they’re such precious babies fumbling around like newborn colts and i am living
“The Trojan War Horse was built around the time the Trojan War took place.” I mean. He’s not wrong…
“ Like Gaea, Ouranos had a human form too, in his human form he was a tall buff guy, with long black hair, wearing only a loincloth… (don’t judge me, Gaea was the one who made him…) So then they get married, bla bla bla bal bal.”
“ So they have triplets, and these kids define UGLY. Now don’t get me wrong they were as big and strong as the titans but they were so brutish and NEEDED any kind of waxing, and to top it all off each one had a huge eye in the middle of their forehead. They became the elder cyclops.Of course when Ouranos saw them he was like “Nope!” and made chains out the nights pure blackness and chained up the triplets and tossed them into the pit.”
“ So Gaea had come up with this new and brilliant idea called killing.”
“ But that is a story for another time. For now I will work on painting some of the moments for the LAVP so see ya later. My references are:“Percy Jackson and the Greek Gods” book by Rick Riordan, Goggle, Wikapedia”
Okay I honestly never anticipated this post to go beyond my immediate circle, and apparently some people have missed the point of this post. This is their first paper. They are learning and part of learning is doing things very badly before doing them well. Honestly I only wanted to share some nostalgic cute-response trigger with y’all witnessing the first adorable, fumbling baby steps into this kind of assignment, not for some of you to fucking judge them or their teacher just because their first attempts aren’t perfect. So like. God just enjoy it without being an asshole.
“In this paragraph I will be telling you the dimensions of the Colosseum in Rome.” “In this paragraph I will be talking about the features of the Colosseum.”
Not what was meant by making sure you have a strong thesis statement, but kudos to this kid who was obviously listening and trying to apply that to their paper <3
“I am going to talk about things like Odysseus’s stops, the characters involved with his stops, and how long and far he traveled to get home. I can’t wait to show you everything that I have learned so far!”
oh my god this precious sunflower
“Nearly every town in Ancient Greek has a patron god or goddess because most gods didn’t share well.” There’s almost nothing wrong with this sentence I’m just enjoying this masterful use of understatement.
i read this entire thing nodding, going, yes, yes, this is what my students are like also. this is #relatable content.
then i read “middle schoolers”
i am a graduate assistant
i teach college students
Reblog because we were all that bad once. RIP for the college assistant grading papers that rival the middle school kids though
“Most gods didn’t share well” They are not wrong
@people who dont draw
you should draw bc ‘bad’ art makes me happy
this is what im talking about. its raw. unfiltered. no ulterior motives clouded by the desire to be ‘artsy’ or ‘deep’. it is what it is and it makes me smile
make a small little frogue and send her to me, create happiness for us both
she is here………………
