It’s November and I’m still destroyed by the Umbrella Academy ending, spoilers ahead.

Screw them for making Five/Lila a romance thing.

Screw then for what they did to Diego

Screw them for what they did to Klaus

Screw them for taking everything I loved about Umbrella Academy and leaving it out of season 4.

Screw them for ruining the characters and their relationships.

Screw them for not letting Luther find Sloane.

Screw them for building up Diego/Lila for two seasons just to torpedo them.

Screw them for reducing Lila to a love triangle plot device rather than the badass she was.

Screw them for changing Fives whole character.

Screw them for not showing us 6 episodes of sibling bonding, shenanigans and fun, intelligent plot lines that keep me excited.

What gets me more upset is the fact that they keep blaming the cut from 10 episodes to 6, but I can promise you if that was the plot and you just gave me 4 more episodes of it more in depth we’d still be having this conversation.

Exhibit A: Bad-ass, feral, using whatever is within reach, not giving a shit about proper handling, a weapon is basically an extension of his body Five Hargreeves

Exhibit B: Cliche, cheesy cop-show character, follows all protocol and direct orders, no emotion, all out of ammo and all out of ideas Five Hargreeves

s1 ep1 of umbrella academy is a magnificent pilot. even ignoring how well it establishes the characters (+ their estrangement/relationship to each other) the sheer audacity of introducing them as 1, 2, 3, 4, and then 7!!!!!

I absolutely LOVE the fact that the Hargreeves siblings DID have toys despite what you read in fanfics.

They had big, plastic lego bricks! They had crayons and colors and paints! Klaus has childhood drawing up on his desk! Viktor said he himself had action figures! Five had robot figures and toy vehicles! Luther had paints and plane model kits! Allison's room is the classic teenage girl room with jewellery and quirky pencils and boyband posters!

We never got to see Ben's room and Diego didn't have anything that outstanding beside a dartboard, but it still shows.

They were kids. They had some idea of a childhood. They had the things and got to do the stuff like all the other kids.

But it doesn't take away from the pain or trauma they had suffered.

To being completely stripped of something is one thing. But they knew what children should do, what other people did when they were kids. Because they were allowed to as well!

But all the comfort was never able to shield them. It made for some good memories mixed into the bad ones

Umbrella academy subway code

So the way my brain works, I love a puzzle. ADORE a puzzle. So seeing that encrypted language all over the subway in season 4? It gave me an itch in my brain that needed to be solved. Playing around with it, it looked like a substition cipher, simple switch for letters and symbols. But with any TV show and props, there is a chance that someone in the prop department just threw together something random.

However. When I started looking, excluding the subway station names, there were 26 unique symbols. Which couldn't be a coincidence.

And it wasn't.

I started off by giving each symbol a letter, and then looking at frequency analysis. This got me some of the way there, (managed to get THE as a consistent correct pattern) but for less common letters the system fell apart. I was shown an image from the propstore auction (thanks @hansodax) so decided to focus on just this.

By doing the conversion to letters and then running again through a frequency analysis it was looking consistent with english. A couple of runs through a substition cipher decrypter and the word time line popped out. Just some manual clean up then needed.

I thought this was random until the incredible @hansodax thought to translate it.... It means loneliness. I'm 90% sure this still is from the first timeline they go to. The one where original Five is alone. Holy shit!

and the lettering on the subway car itself is also random, as using the same encryption just gives nonsense. I did suspect that might be the case given that the same symbols are repeated over and over on diferrent signs. Just in case I did invert, but upside down it doesn't match the alphabet.

Other signs used appear to be multiple letters and some new symbols mashed together:

I suspect a proper language was created for the initial prop of the map, and then the symbols used to decorate other surfaces without meaning behind them. Another consideration is that there are numbers in the mixed together symbols, but these are often harder to crack.
