please, actually, get fucking mad over this, the entirety of australia basically just banned all social media for anyone who doesnt want to give up their privacy to the government, there was no vote on this, no nothing, they just went ahead and fucking passed this ridiculously privy law and barely anybody’s talking about it the actual fuck

okay so to actually explain what exactly is happening, it’s an age thing. theyve used ‘protect the children’ and ‘let kids be kids’ as a weapon again. anyone under 16 is banned from social media, but to enforce this they have openly admitted everyone will need to link their government id to their social media. this whole ‘protect the kids’ thing was a very obvious trojan horse for getting ppl to give up their privacy.

and yknow, that alone is a very shitty law even without the whole surrendering your private information to the government thing.

theyve made outside uninhabitable, there’s nowhere left to go. public areas have degenerated, theyve turned hanging out into a crime with loitering, streets feel unwalkable sometimes, parents are more wary of letting their kids walk around on their own than they used to be, and now theyre trying to ban one of the main ways kids manage to distract themselves inside the house.

when i was 15 i was depressed and lonely, unable to leave the house very far, no friends, nobody. the one place that helped me feel less alone was online communities. i wouldve killed myself if it werent for the support i recieved on there. and now theyre trying to ban that for future generations, in a world that hates them being both outside and inside.

and even still, this is still a fucking trojan horse to get you to give up your privacy.

also also. there's a difference to me between a "power of friendship" story and a "power of love" story, and that difference is NOT simply that the former is pmatonic and the latter is romantic.

a "power of friendship" story focuses on prosocial behaviors, like teamwork and sharing and mutual encouragement and support. a "power of love" story focuses on the *feelings*. both can be good in different ways.

power of love stories are USUALLY romantic, cuz most writers think of romance as the more intense bond, because of amatonormativity. (additionally, power of friendship stories are usually relegated to children's stories. this is partially because platonic relationships are often seen as less mature than romance. but it's partially just because kids' stories have a responsibility to teach prosocial messages that adult media doesn't)

the season 1 finale of she ra and the princesses of power was a "power of friendship" story. the princess alliance band together and use their combined strengths and teamwork to beat back the horde. the series finale of that same show was a "power of love" story. adora and catra's romantic feelings for each other stops the heart of etheria and defeats horde prime's hivemind.

but there are also platonic "power of love" stories. the adventure zone: balance and its storyline about the power of bonds is a "power of love" story, which uses both romantic and platonic examples. infinity train book 2 is a "the power of love" story where jesse and lake's platonic feelings (while the two are often shipped by the fandom, canon exclusively calls them "friends" so i'm calling it platonic) for each other were strong enough to break the rules of the train and get lake's freedom.

Words cannot express how utterly disappointed I am when it comes to helping Sudan. People are hesitant to show their support. They would even dismiss it. No, I am not making this shit up. I have been talking to people about Sudan and their reaction is lacklustre!

I know anti-blackness plays a significant role, along with the lack of media coverage (which is, again, due to anti-blackness), but this is unacceptable. Many people are dying. The country going through a flooding. Homes are destroyed. Families are displaced. Famine is claiming more lives than the RSF (Rapid Support Forces) and SAF (Sudanese Armed Forces) combined.
