Hetalia characters with dishes typical for their country - part 1 (part 2 here)

Italy: Maritozzo (cream bread) -> This Roman milk bread is said to be dated back to times of Ancient Rome. The baked good is filled with generous amounts of whipped cream and somtimes decorated with fruit or pistachio. Young man also used it in courtship by hiding jewellery or a ring in the filling.

Germany: Breze(l) mit Schokolade (chocolate dipped pretzel) -> A baked pastry with sweet or salty toppings, best known for its distinctive symetrical, knotted shape. Dipped in chocolate the soft pretzel is a popular snack at funfairs and markets, but there are also small, crispy pretzels that are to be eaten like crisps/chips.

Japan: 和菓子 (wagashi; plant based sweet) -> Originally meaning "Japanese confectionery" the term now refers to a traditional dessert made from plant based ingredients. It's artful shapes are influenced by season, nature, or even poetry.

France: Quiche Lorraine -> A savoury tarte traditionally made with a filling of eggs, heavy cream, ham, and bacon. Today cheese is often added, though it is controversial among professionals. (In the drawing there seems to be leek added too which is not mentioned in the original recipe either.)

England: Scotch Egg -> Supposedly inspired by the Indian nargisi koftas, this dish consists of a hard-boiled or soft-boiled egg wrapped in pork (sausage meat) which is coated in breadcrumbs and then baked or deep-fried. Often served in pubs and a popular cold snack as well.

America: Hamburger -> A popular fastfood consisting of a patty (traditionally made from ground beef) between two halfs of a sliced bun. There are countless variations made with all kinds of additional ingredients and condiments, including expensive high-end versions with edible goldflakes.

Russia: пирожки́ (Pirozhki; stuffed bread) -> This popular street food is a baked good made from yeast-dough is typically boat-shaped and filled sweet or savory with meat, vegetables, fruit, jam or tvorog (an Eastern European fermented milk product with a consistency similar to curd cheese)

China: 小籠包 / 小笼包 (Xiaolongbao; steamed bun) -> Steamed dumplings made from leavened or unleavened dough traditionally filled with minced pork, traditionally eaten for breakfast. The top of the dumpling is closed by folding and pinching it. Authentical dumplings have at least 14 folds, preferably 18.

cute high school AU idea I just had: Arthur is the kinda scary punk guy that most people try to stay away from - and he catches Alfred stealing his cigarettes.

Arthur catches Alfred’s wrist before he can get anywhere and pulls him aside behind the school building. He yells at Alfred but stops when the poor boy starts tearing up. “Are you crying?” Arthur asks confused but with an edge of disgust in his voice which only causes Alfred to start sobbing uncontrollably. Alfred admits that he only tried to steal those goddamn cigarettes because he’s being bullied pretty badly and those guys made him to it and he just begs Arthur to “Make it quick, okay? Maybe if you beat me up now they’ll be done with me for today.”

Alfred looks so pathetic and Arthur, having grown up with three older brothers who loved teasing and taunting their baby brother and making him cry, feels bad for him. He shoves his cigarettes back into one of the many pockets in his pants and pulls a tissue out of another one, throws the tissue at Alfred and tells him to “Come. What are you waiting for? Follow me!”

Too intimidated and exhausted to protest Alfred does as he is told and trots behind Arthur, across the schoolyard right up to that group of boys who are pointing and laughing at a red-eyes, puffy-cheeked Alfred. But the laughing quickly stops when Arthur breaks their leaders nose with a single, well-aimed punch in his face.

The next thing Alfred knows is sitting next to Arthur on the floor or the school bathroom, still sniffling while he helps cleaning his bloody knuckles until they are both laughing about the absurdity of their situation.

Arthur invites him out for a beverage that same afternoon. ❤️

Chapter 1: Desperate Times, desperate Measures

It had been a hard week for everyone in the family, so hard that eventually France decided that doing something to cheer everyone up couldn’t wait anymore. He had his own quite substantial problems, but even those couldn’t make him stand seeing his family like that.

Next to him, England was turning gloomier each day more, as the risks his economy was facing seemed to become worse with every choice his government made. On the other side of the ocean, in the meantime, America was so nervous about the upcoming mid-term elections that he had already packed on several pounds, and even the level-headed Canada was about to have a mental breakdown after the meteorological devastation that had hit his lands.

After a lot of thinking and several inconclusive hours on the phone with each member of his family, France came to the following conclusion: they were all in dire need of a holiday.

He crossed the Channel back to England, then, scooped up his husband and dragged him screaming and kicking on the first plane to Canada. During the flight, France successfully managed to bring England back to an acceptable mood - at the cost of traumatising all the other passengers, who weren’t ready to assist live at the French art of making their husband feel better.

After landing in Canada, they fished their son out of the tears of despair and reserved a coach on the first train to Washington, deciding to use the time to dry him up and comfort him properly before having another son to care for.
