Fresh trim for the summer from Tom Carlisle, IG dalesfarmer
Just look at the size of this fleece compared to the sheep! The fleece itself will be around 4kg. A weight lifted & much relief for the sheep given the coming warmer summer months.
Shearing is carried out for the animal's welfare, to prevent overheating, blowfly and other parasite infestation and disease.
A competent shearer can shear 300 sheep a day, or more! Truly hard graft! that require lots of training, experience & practice to quickly & cleanly remove the entire fleece.
The wool itself is a fantastic product, natural and renewable - there will be another fleece to shear next year, durable, hard wearing, fire retardant, biodegradable & versatile.
I love how satisfied that sheep looks.
The village of Espel - located in the province of Flevoland, Netherlands - is home to 774 inhabitants. The farms in the region specialize in the growth of flower bulbs.
