Alfred Hitchcock’s North by Northwest premiered in Chicago, IL on 1 July 1959.
For several years, Hitchcock had been mulling over an idea he called “The Man on Lincoln’s Nose”, inspired by an story told to him by the journalist Otis Guernsey about an innocent man mistaken for a spy (Hitchcock purchased the story rights from Guernsey for $10,000).
Hitchcock and screenwriter Ernest Lehman (Sabrina, Sweet Smell of Success) began working on initial drafts in the summer of 1957 and completed in the winter.
James Stewart was originally Hitchcock’s choice for the role of Roger Thornhill but opted for Cary Grant (some critics contend the change was prompted by the poor box office of Vertigo), and Yul Brynner was the first choice for Vandamm before James Mason. Grace Kelly and Elizabeth Taylor were both considered for the role of Eve Kendall before Eva Marie Saint was recommended.
Hitchcock had originally intended to film on location at Mount Rushmore, and the National Park Service provided a permit, with the stipulation that no scenes of violence would be filmed “on or near the sculpture.” The permit was revoked when a local paper revealed Hitchcock’s true plans.
Saul Bass’s title sequence was the first to feature kinetic typography (with credits flying into the frame from off-screen).
North by Northwest was the 6th highest-grossing film in the US in 1959, and received 3 Academy Award nominations: Art Direction (Robert Boyle), film editing (George Tomasini, working on his 6th of 9 films for Hitchcock), and screenplay (Lehman). Ben-Hur received the Oscars for Art Direction and Editing, while Pillow Talk received the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay.
After seeing the film Ian Fleming sent Hitchcock a telegram asking if he wanted to direct the first James Bond film, with Cary Grant as Bond.
