As satisfying as it is quirky, Inside Llewyn Davis is another unique film from the gifted minds of Joel and Ethan Coen. This time around, they’ve shifted their focus to the bohemian world of the 1960s folk music scene. It’s a divinely lyrical ode to a time that brought us so much wonderful music, and their attention to detail is remarkable. From the costume design to the phrasing of lines, you are right there with the characters.

Oscar Isaac, in a star-making role, is equal parts charming and despicable. You feel for him, but also want him to reap what he sows. As with most Coen Brothers ventures, the supporting cast is a dream. The players come and go, some more quickly than others, but all of them leave a lasting mark. This movie’s all Isaac’s though. He energizes it from beginning to end.

Every year, the Academy gets at least one thing completely wrong when it comes to their nominations, and this year is no exception. Inside Llewyn Davis should have at least been nominated for Best Picture, Director(s), Actor and Music. But as Bob Dylan said, “Having these colossal accolades and titles, they get in the way.”
