FRIDAY, April 15

  • YA authors have been fighting the mainstream definition of "normal" to reflect the way real teens, think, look, and feel since the 70’s when Judy Blume and Walter Dean Myers hit bookshelves with novels like Blubber and Hoops. But are we pushing hard enough to reflect the diversity of our readers? We've assembled a group of highly acclaimed YA authors to debate how far YA lit has come and how far we still need to go.
  • Fierce Reads Author Appearances: Kami Garcia
  • The “Y” in YA might stand for “young,” but teens deal with serious challenges and big emotions—the thrill of first love and the pain of heartbreak, the power that comes from finding yourself and the confusion that comes from making mistakes. As writers, how do we create authentic characters and plotlines? Are there limits when writing for a teen audience? Join us and for an unforgettable discussion with a panel of YA authors who aren’t afraid to push the envelope and keep it real.

Doctor Who episodes you must watch from Sandy Hall, author of Signs Point to Yes!

In Sandy Hall’s Signs Point to Yes, Jane is a BIG fan of fandom and an especially big fan of Doctor Who, so she writes a list of MUST SEE episodes for Teo, her crush.

Jane’s list of Doctor Who episodes that Teo must watch

(Some of these are two parters and NO I do not think that’s cheating.)

1.     Blink

I insist that you watch this episode. No one can resist this episode. Even the staunchest anti-Who lobbyists would be willing to watch this episode, mostly because the Doctor is barely even in it.

2.     Vincent and the Doctor

This episode is one of my favorites because it’s not just about how the Doctor is helping Vincent Van Gogh OF ALL PEOPLE, but also because he’s really helping Amy. She’s so sad and he really does take her mind off of it. Also all the incredible art you get to see. And Bill Nighy! I love that guy.

3.     Angels Take Manhattan

A WORLD OF CREEPINESS. When the Statue of Liberty starts walking around you know you’re in trouble. I love River Song in this episode. And I’m hoping when you see River Song you’ll have enough questions to make you want to keep watching.

4.     The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances

“Are you my mummy?” I think I’m really drawn to the scarier/weirder episodes. This one is both scary and weird. But it has a happy ending! Oh, and Captain Jack Harkness! I love him and I think you will too! Side note: I do hope that by the time we get to these two episodes you’ll be willing to watch the whole series, but if not I’m ready with more choice examples, so that at the very least you can discuss certain things with me.

5.     Runaway Bride

I love Donna, so sue me! I love this introduction of her and I love that we don’t even see her again for a full season. But after all of that Rose business (Don’t get me started on Rose I can hardly talk about her and that’s why she’s not featured often on this list. My pain is too real.) at the end of series two, this episode felt like a breath of fresh air. I was delighted by all those Santas with guns, too.

6.     The Impossible Astronaut

This episode is brilliant and I will fight anyone who disagrees.

7.     The Eleventh Hour

The premier episode of my favorite Doctor? Of course it’s on this list. I’ll never look at fish fingers and custard the same way.

8.     The Lodger

The Doctor gets locked out of the Tardis and he goes to live with a random dude named Craig. Hilarity ensues. And there’s a creepy upstairs room which is always a bonus!

9.     New Earth

I’m putting this on the list so you get a decent taste of Ten and Rose. Lots of people love them. I did. UNTIL THEY RIPPED MY HEART OUT AND KICKED IT TO THE CURB. But it’s a quality episode and there’s this whole thing with cat people and body swapping and you can’t go wrong with any of that.

10.  Silence in the Library/Forest of the Dead

BECAUSE OF DONNA AND HOW MUCH I LOVE HER. NOT TO MENTION THE CREEPINESS. I wish I could someday get through a list of favorite anything without turning into a screaming, emotional fangirl about this show, but today is apparently not that day. I apologize for the misuse of capslock. It is the only way I can express my feelings.

GLBT Month: Sandy Hall guest post

For our continued observance of GLBT Month, Sandy Hall, author of A Little Something Different, shares her views on the importance of including GLBT characters in her books.

I’ve had the opportunity to speak to a lot of high school creative writing and English classes over the past six months. I’ve had the opportunity to speak to a lot of different groups, actually, but there’s something so very special about speaking to high school students.
For starters, they’re the audience I was targeting when I wrote A Little Something Different. But what I didn’t realize as I wrote the story was that I would crave their feedback. I want to hear what teenagers think of A Little Something Different more than any other age group, good or bad.
But it was during one of those creative writing classes that a girl raised her hand, almost like a wave. It wasn’t shy, but it wasn’t bold, it was like, “Hey, if you have a second, I have something to say.”
When I looked over at her to acknowledge her casual hand-raise, I smiled and she grinned back widely. “I don’t really have a question,” she said. “But I wanted to thank you for writing about Inga and Pam. I’ve never read any other books about adult lesbians and, well, it gave me something to look forward to. So thanks.”
I was instantly teary-eyed. I had worked hard on Inga and Pam. They were easily my favorite (human) characters in the book.
During the planning process for A Little Something Different, I had come to a sort of terrible realization. After I decided to make the professor and the professor’s spouse women, I sat there trying to think of other young adult novels with adult lesbian characters and came up empty handed. Young adult books were my forte. I was a teen librarian for goodness sake! I should have been able to think of books that had adult lesbian characters.
I’m not saying there aren’t any books out there featuring adult lesbian characters, but where I could come up with books off the top of my featuring adult gay men, the same wasn’t true for women. There’s a hole there in YA lit and I wanted Inga and Pam to help fill it.
Long story short: diversity matters. It’s not too much to ask for, to lose yourself in a book and find someone you relate to within its pages. Everyone deserves that, but especially teenagers.  It’s time to help them find pieces of their identity anyway we can. And I hope that’s what I’m doing with every book I write.
