The Kiss of Deception by Mary E. Pearson
In a society steeped in tradition, Princess Lia's life follows a preordained course. As First Daughter, she is expected to have the revered gift of sight—but she doesn't—and she knows her parents are perpetrating a sham when they arrange her marriage to secure an alliance with a neighboring kingdom—to a prince she has never met.
On the morning of her wedding, Lia flees to a distant village. She settles into a new life, hopeful when two mysterious and handsome strangers arrive—and unaware that one is the jilted prince and the other an assassin sent to kill her. Deception abounds, and Lia finds herself on the brink of unlocking perilous secrets—even as she finds herself falling in love.
Mary E. Pearson is writing a companion novel to the Remnant Chronicles called Dance of Thieves and now you can read an EXCLUSIVE EXCERPT 😱🎉
Dance of Thieves by Mary E. Pearson
When the patriarch of the Ballenger empire dies, his son, Jase, becomes its new leader. Even nearby kingdoms bow to the strength of this outlaw family, who have always governed by their own rules. But a new era looms on the horizon, set in motion by a young queen, which makes her the target of the dynasty's resentment and anger.
At the same time, Kazi, a legendary former street thief, is sent by the queen to investigate transgressions against the new settlements. When Kazi arrives in the forbidding land of the Ballengers, she learns that there is more to Jase than she thought. As unexpected events spiral out of their control, bringing them intimately together, they continue to play a cat and mouse game of false moves and motives in order to fulfill their own secret missions.

5 Random Things I Recommend by Mary E. Pearson
Five random things I recommend:
- The Vikings series! It’s on the History Channel and follows the life of Ragnar Lothbrok—a real life Viking. The series is amazing. If you love the Game of Thrones (which I do!) you will love this too!
- I am picky about soap and I have tried a lot of different ones, but one of my favorites is from Trader Joe’s! Their pure vegetable Oatmeal & Honey soap is fantastic—and inexpensive. Try it!
- One of my favorite all time romancey movies is Ghost with Demi Moore, Patrick Swayze, and Whoopi Goldberg. It is sexy, sad, and funny too.
- There are so many great books and series out there—but don’t forget the older ones too. The Thief, published in 1996, begins a series by Megan Whalen Turner and it is so good! I hear a fifth book in the series is coming soon!
- If you are a flip-floppy kind of person (and who isn’t in the summetime?) I highly recommend the Olukai Ohana sandal. T hey will get you across miles of sand, and through every theme park on the planet. A bit pricey, but they last!
In the Remnant Chronicles a princess must find her way in a reborn world, through cultures built on myth, fairy tale, and the disconnected pieces of a world gone by. It is a story about the resilience of humanity and the short reach of history. But mostly the Remnant Trilogy is about Lia, and her timeless story of love and sacrifice.
The final book in the Remnant Chronicles, The Beauty of Darkness is out August 2nd. Click here to learn more.
Where I Work by Mary E. Pearson
I work in a lot of places depending on what is going on at the time, what I am writing—and what the weather is like, but easily I spend the vast mairty of my time, here, sitting under this umbrella. Sometimes instead of leaves, there are birds hopping over my head.
And beneath this canopy, this is where I sit, a corner of my yard that is quiet and serene and free of telephones and distractions. Mostly. This is where I draft and revise books—with my sidekick. I have a rule (that I try not to break much) that I don’t use the internet on my laptop, and I leave my phone in the house. I live in Califonia so I can pretty much write out here year round. This is where all of The Remnant Chronicles were written.
But sometimes I need a change of pace and scenery, so I might go to my local coffee shop to write. They have big cushy recliner chairs that are pretty inviting. And seriously, who doesn’t like a coffee roaster looking over their shoulder that is smiling? I will also write on the road when I’m on vacations—especially when I’m in peaceful inspiring settings.
And then there is my office. It is the exact opposite of my serene drafting corner. Lots of STUFF. When I have to get down to serious editing, I ened a lot of notes at my fingertips and my large desk to spread it all out. I usually have two computers going—my desktop and my laptop—and you will always find haf a cup of cold coffee on my desk. Actually, in this picture, my office is fairly clean, but even with stacks and piles all around me, there is a method to the madness and I mostly know where everything is. On the back wall you can see my bulletin boards where I pin inspirational pictures, maps, and other essential notes. And though he doesn’t like it as well as outside office, my sidekick will follow me up here and is usually sprawled out beneath my desk.

5 Things You Don’t Know about Mary E. Pearson
- I used to surf. When I was like, 14. Sometimes I saw fins in the water. I would hope they belonged to dolphins.
- When I met S.E. Hinton I was so nervous I babbled on for two minutes without taking a breath.
- I love ducks. I love everything about them—the way they waddle, the way they quack, the way they nibble at your fingers. But I’ve never had one because of dogs. Golden retrievers love them in a whole different way.
- I was just in Vienna and visited the Museum of Torture. It was underground in a former WWII bunker and I have to admit to a little trepidation walking down dark stairs into who knows what.
- I give myself pep talks as I write. And write pep notes too. It takes a long time to write a book and a writer needs all the boosts they can get. Here’s one for you: “You can do it.” Remember that.
