wanted to say something more about this than just that utena is my favorite, and i don't think the reasoning submitted for the poll quite manages to get to the core of why i think utena deserves to win:

i think it's sometimes a little overlooked just how important utena being an orphan is to her character and arc. yes, it led to her meeting her prince and shaping her life and identity around that meeting, but also. not only did the deaths of her parents directly lead to her meeting her abuser in the first place, the way she ends up idealizing the idea of family itself due to it, is the very thing that makes her so vulnerable to his grooming. her lack of experience and knowledge about what a family is "supposed" to be like makes her quite naive to certain things, but it is also in many ways part of what gives her the necessary perspective to question things and to change them in the way that she does. utena's dead parents is central to what makes her who she is within the story, and her character quite simply would not work without it. at the beginning of the show it might seem like a typical but not all that important tragic fairy tale backstory, but it is much more than that, tying directly into the show's themes of family and abuse.
