A knock, a call.
“Marx, may I come in?” a voice asked.
Swinging the door open, in came Magolor the enchanter. His presence was inaudible aside from his voice as he floated in.
“Just relighting your candles,” he said.
Magolor stares expectantly.
No response.
“Chatty as always,” Magolor hummed.
Embers sparked to life with the flick of a paw.
Spiders shied away from the sudden light and crept back in the shadows.
“You can’t stay in bed all day, Marx,” he scolded.
He left.

A knock, a call.
“Marx, may I come in?” Magolor asked.
In through the open door he came.
“Just relighting your candles,” he said.
Magolor stared expectantly.
Silence.
“Of course! I’d be happy to,” Magolor exclaimed.
Candles were set aflame.
Cobwebs dirtied the corners and dust covered every quarter.
“And get out of bed, silly,” he said.
He left.

Glazed pupils stared ahead through cracked eyelids.
He doesn’t remember getting his cheeks wet.
Fire scorched the candles.
The smell is unbearable.
This isn’t happening.
He left.

His eyelights flickered. The ones in the mirror flickered back.
“I am not me,” he rasped.
In an instant, the mirror shattered.
