Her postulation, the gesture which covers her mouth, indicates proper domestic etiquette and behavior for bourgeoise women in the late 19th century: a lady is to be seen and not heard. She stares off coquettishly, quietly smiling in response to the letter she has just read, which has been set on the table while she reflects on her suitors advances.
