A ★★★★★ review of Shame (1968)
A desolate meditation on the destructive nature of warfare, Shame is, rather obviously, not a happy film, yet it is still an impactful, unvarnished look at the effects war has not on soldiers, but on ordinary, innocent civilians, through the prism of a seemingly happily married, apolitical couple who’s relationship rapidly decays when faced with a civil war in an unidentified European country, that has violence and death brutally tear through their seemingly idyllic life. While made at the height of the Vietnam War, Bergman always insisted that the film was more about the smaller, confused “little wars” that happen
