Before i go to bed, i would like to point out that it was a producer of la la land who told moonlight they they won. The producer was up there giving his acceptance speech and then found out that there was a mistake. Instead of being pissy about it or letting jimmy tell moonlight he told them and give them the oscar. Jimmy asked why they couldnt all get oscars and the producer, who i will add the name of tomorrow when im more awake, told him that moonlight deserved it and he was happy to give the oscar to them. All of la la lands people quickly left the stage so moonlight could have their time in the spotlight. No matter what your feelings on la la land please dont insult them for this. It was not their fault and they handled it so well and gave moonlight the respect they deserved.

Diversity matters

He deserves it so much

I want to clarify this, as well.

He’s the only full-blooded Indian actor to EVER be nominated for an Academy Award in an acting category.

The other two mentioned above are Ben Kingsly, who’s half Indian, and Merle Oberon, who denied her desi and mauri heritage her entire life and was never recognized as such until after her death.

I want you ALL to recognize that in 89 years, with Bollywood being the biggest film industry on planet earth, a full-blooded Indian actor has NEVER BEEN NOMINATED FOR ACTING BEFORE. And really, that isn’t the Academy’s fault. Indian Actors are almost NEVER recognized in western media, and they’re almost never given roles. Just last weekend, Aziz Ansari became the first Indian person to ever host SNL

As someone with desi heritage who wants to work in the western film business one day, this is such a big fucking deal. I’m really excited about all the black talent nominated this year, but I really don’t want this huge, important milestone to get swept under the rug.

(Also, this isn’t shade to half-Indian people’s accomplishments like Ben Kingsley, as I, myself, am half-Indian. But I’m also a mixed race person that recognizes the privilege that comes with it, mostly the accessibility to a western audience with lighter skin and more western features).
