Invitation Morgan Gwenwald, 1986

what I love about this invitation is that it’s left open to interpretation by the viewer. this fem might be offering herself to be restrained - or she might be suggesting her lover submit themselves to her. either way, she is taking control of her erotic desires, the ultimate sexual intent of her invitation not ambiguous in the least

Morgan Gwenwald title & date unknown

images like this make me ache for access to archives of On Our Backs and the similar lesbian sex publications that flourished at the time. this is what resonates so deeply in my soul it seems elemental - a desire felt innately, a shock of recognition, a reflection finally for what I had no name, no language for; only a dormant ache that trembled, voiceless, in my marrow. the tender supplication in being on my knees at a butch’s feet; imploring her at once to let me adore her, and that she adore me in return. asking at once for her strength and protection whilst offering my care and devotion. the passivity of this posture is illusory; it is an active declaration of profound emotion that insists upon acknowledgment. it eloquently expresses an element intrinsic to my femness: my absolute love and desire for the butch lesbian.

A Day In The Life of A Bull-Dyke follows a big boned butcher into skirmishes, drag, and the arms of a beautiful recruit. The public and private lives of this “strange animal” are explored with the reverence and glee found in the educational exposés like Reefer Madness and bad-boy films like Rebel without a Cause. However, because this fictionalized lesbian history is a first-person narrative, it is filled with all the joy, pain, and ambivalence each of us experiences while negotiating a marginalized identity. Winner of second prize at the 1995 United States Super 8 Film and Video Festival and the 1997 Manitoba Motion picture Association Blizzard Award for “Best Experimental.” 10:30 min. Super 8 finished on video transfer. 1995.

Her

I had been told about her. How she would always, always. How she would never, never. I’d watched and listened but I still fell for her, how she always, always. How she never, never. In the small brave night, her lips, butterfly moments, I tried to catch her and she laughed a loud laugh that cracked me in two, but then I had been told about her, how she would always, always. How she would never, never. We two listened to the wind. We two galloped a pace - We two, up and away, away, away. And now she’s gone, like she said she would go. But then I had been told about her - how she would always, always.
