in case y'all were wondering i will be emotionally intelligent dean truthing until i die. and even if he wasn't. that's ok
when people talk shit about him because they headcanon him as being a repressed queer guy. do you hear yourselves
"hahaha this guy was emotionally [and physically] neglected growing up and has never had stability or a community and he lives in an era/region that is deeply homophobic so he doesn't have the tools to understand his own emotions and he thinks he is STRAIGHT! 🤣" do you hear yourselves
that being said i do believe that he is a very sensitive person who knows himself very well and is often quite private because he doesn't have many people to confide in. until cas comes along, he doesn't have any friends. there's only so much that one wants to share with their family. and even then, he shares a lot with them. no hate, it's cool to explore stuff, but i really don't think you get him if you earnestly write him as a super repressed person that doesn't realize he's attracted to men or loves cas until hella late in the series or after it
like...y'all saw them confide in each other in s4. y'all saw them have fun together in s5. y'all saw dean mourn cas in s7. y'all saw him keep the coat. y'all saw him on his knees in the crypt in s8. y'all heard "i need you" and read "i love you." dean knows
There is this unspoken, assumed aspect that I notice a lot of people who’ve never had to spend a significant portion of their time somewhere rural or remote don’t really grasp;
The “I ain’t got time for this shit” attitude.
I’m not even sure if I’m explaining it properly? It’s not as abrasive as the above implies. Just that… there is an unspoken quality of doing or living in a way that makes you happy - you might as well do what you can, because you only have so many hours in a day-days in a year-years in a life, you don’t have time to sit on your hands just get out there ‘an get on with it. It’s never explicit of course - it’s just accepted without the need for explanation. That pair of old hermits up the road living off the second dirt access path five miles on the left just wanna be left alone and they sell their blackberry jam and apple butter in November to make a bit of extra cushion before the cold really sets down and that’s it. No questions asked it’s no one else’s business.
Dean kind of embodies that quality, and I wonder if people miss that because they’re just not familiar with the unspokeness of the notion? I don’t think I even put it to words all that well. But - it’s not a question. Of course he’s sensitive and he feels and he loves and he knows himself and he empathizes, and he loves Cass, of course he does.
