Okay so this is a big deal
To me, and to a significant subset of Sir Terry's fans (including most of you who've found this by the tags), his writing is serious commentary on the human condition - politics, prejudice, self-control, revenge vs. justice, religion, idealism, faith in people vs. cynicism, and more - dressed up with fantasy settings and a hefty leavening of humor to make it fun to read. And it is WILDLY fun to read, actual laugh-out-loud or at least a snicker averaging about every page.
But there's this common idea among the "important literature" people that fun and funny books are not also worthwhile or important in the same way.
This is a Discworld book being released WITH ACADEMIC COMMENTARY and AS A PENGUIN CLASSIC. That's a HUGE amount of recognition.

listen to me. lying is morally neutral. and for many people in shitty situations it's a survival tactic.
lying in order to cause harm is often wrong, because causing harm is generally wrong. lying is also done for a myriad of other reasons, including because it isn't safe to speak truth, or because privacy is a thing and damn what an incredibly invasive question to ask in the first place.
truth is earned, my friend.
also, sometimes lying is funny. sometimes it saves time. sometimes it's easier, sometimes it accomplishes a goal, sometimes the truth is nobody's business, or is tricky to articulate, or you don't know what the truth is but are expected to have an answer regardless. sometimes you just straight up want people to stop bothering you. sometimes lying is an experiment to see how much you can get away with. sometimes you just want to be a little mean, yeah.
and in none of these situations is lying automatically "right" or "wrong" it is simply a tool that people will use, and that you will have to make your own decisions about based on situation and context.

Dionysus on Theseus and Ariadne
In most versions of the Theseus myth, he dumps her literally/figuratively on the island of Naxos, Dionysus’s sacred island and sails back to Athens without her. The next day Dionysus is like “Hey beautiful castaway, I notice you’re living in a lean-to in my backyard, want to get married just a fuck you to Theseus?” and is faithful to her for the rest of her life.
When Athenians told the story, because they wanted to make their hometown boy look good, they say Dionysus actually demanded her as tribute for safe passage back to Athens…but I prefer to believe Dionysus is the patron of the fake/revenge dating that becomes real romance trope
If you have not read the percy jackson series you will not have experienced the absolutely incredible scene in the third book where Dyonisus reveals why he is the way he is towards the demigods. In Riordan’s version Dyonisus does not just marry her for her mortal lifespan but she became immortal and lives with him on Olympus as his wife.
So great news- the idea that Ariadne is given immortality and lives with Dionysus comes from Hesiods Theogyny, which is almost as old as the Odyssey and is the second oldest written account of Ariadne that survives today.
“And golden-haired (khrysokomes) Dionysos made blonde-haired Ariadne, the daughter of Minos, his buxom wife: and [Zeus] the son of Kronos (Cronus) made her deathless and unageing for him.”
We also have a good bit of archeological evidence that she was revered as a goddess in classical times with her own festivals and cult worship. (Possibly originating as a Minoan goddess and then absorbed into the larger Greek pantheon with time.)
While more modern Western artists love to focus on the moment Theseus abandons her, much of her older classical art depicts her side by side with Dionysus as his immortal wife.

All I hear from leftists is how much they hate me for my immutable traits, how much they blame me for everything wrong with the world, how much they want me and everyone who looks like me dead.
Whereas Alt-right types would call me "brother" and welcome me into their ranks so long as I hated the right ways.
Do you understand the difference?
I'm an ally and support equality because I feel it's the morally correct choice to make, but holy fuck is it difficult to reconcile that with the fact that means fighting for a lot of people who see you as the scum of the earth.
