The Stranger

Survival in Gaza is a fight for everyone and everything, not just humans. Every living thing is caught up in this nightmare, from the smallest creatures to the strongest among us. Take this little cat, for instance. She’s from Jabalia refugee camp, Al-Tarens neighborhood, house number 96, sixth street. Yeah, I know her address. She’s one of us, a Palestinian too, sitting alone in the rubble, her fur matted and dusty, with a raw, swollen eye that speaks of all she’s been through. She’s lost her hearing; explosions shake her tiny frame, but she doesn’t even react anymore. And yet, her will to survive? Unbroken.

In so many ways, she’s Gaza in a nutshell. Life here is a brutal, endless test of endurance. The genocide, the bitter cold, the soaring prices that turn basic needs like food, shelter, medicine into unattainable luxuries. These are things my family and countless others can only dream of.

For families in Gaza, survival itself has become a privilege. Nonprofits that once helped have pulled out, forced away by the very forces that keep us oppressed. And the few who stayed? Acting as middlemen, diverting the aid that’s supposed to be for us. Some prioritize their own networks in distributing aid; others resell what little is sent. Some even claim that half of donations get eaten up by "logistics costs." And then there’s aid that supposedly just "never arrives." So, families like mine are left to fend for ourselves, stripped of even the basic dignity that comes with having our needs met.

I look at this little cat, and I’m struck by the fragility of life here. My family’s hanging by a thread, surviving day to day in a world that seems indifferent to everything we’re going through. And yet, like her, we just keep going. Not because we’re strong or resilient, but because, honestly, what other choice do we have?

It’s cuter when you recognize that the lion with visible spots is a juvenile. There’s a very high chance the other lion that runs over to investigate is the MOTHER.

The first lion is asking for comfort because she was given a big spook!!! and she needs mommy to tell her it’s safe and ok!!!! (What’s cuter is that mommy clearly reassures her, and goes on to take the parent role of ‘deal with the scream rat in order to protect my large and easily frightened daughter’)

actually you’re completely right that the original lion is a juvenile, but it’s a male! his size and the fact that he still has some baby spots left also indicate that he’s a very YOUNG juvenile, equivalent to a human preteen!

so really what’s happening here is a fantastic mother dashing outside with a broom to defend her 13-year-old son from the angry opossum that he just found in the trash can while taking out the garbage.

And quite clearly neither know what to do, really.

christian missionary work is a millennias-long social experiment to find out what the dumbest thing someone could possibly do is

reading about foreigners detained in North Korea, and a solid 40% of them were just missionaries

"it's my god-given right and duty to force my religion into these people, whether they want it or not" is an attitude which has led to many millions of atrocities over the millennia, but it's also led people to do things like travel to They Kill You Here Island (you'll never guess what happened)

I remember that incident; the missionary in question was obsessed with the Sentinelese. He believed they were the "last outpost of Satan in the world." Its not just unwise to go to North Sentinel Island, its illegal, because the Sentinelese have no natural immunities to many common diseases. (We know this because the natives of neighboring islands were all-but-completely eradicated by european imperialists. Considering pre-European trade networks, it is likely that the Sentinelese are to some degree aware of this.)

With this in mind, the rational conclusion was that the missionary's exclusive intention was Genocide, one way or the other.

I don't disagree with what OP said, I mostly just want to explicate that the people of They Kill You Here Island are acting entirely rationally, given the circumstances.

He tried to travel there FROM INDIA. He could have been carrying something like cholera asymptomatically and killed them all. (Cholera spread to Hispaniola by rescue workers last deployed in South Asia, who were asymptomatic carriers.)

Killing all foreigners isn't just a weird custom that the people of Sentinel Island have, it's a rational survival strategy. Almost all foreigners understand this and don't fucking go there.
