My sappy heart cannot withstand this chapter. Oda really knows how to thread body language into his art. Just look at this:

The reason that this is such a big deal to me is that Sanji is not an overtly protective person. Yes, he takes no issue with carrying women in his arms, but women are an exception to his ostensibly distant and uncaring demeanor. But here, his arms are wrapped tightly around Luffy. This would have been out-of character, had Luffy not been an exception to Sanji’s behavior toward others. Furthermore, he places his hand protectively on top of Luffy’s head, purposely adjusting his hold to do so when he sees that he will have to tank a hit in midair. Again, it’s a really subtle and intimate gesture, and I find it interesting that Oda bothered to change the position of Sanji’s hand simply to close it around Luffy’s head. It really is a first for Sanji.

(And Sanji actually altering his position midair just to protect Luffy from the blow of the fall with his own body… Ha ha, I’m damn happy to be alive!)

Thanks, thanks for saying that “Sanji’s not an overly protective person.” It’s not like he’s constantly sacrificing his own life to pretect everyone, right? It’s not like this entire arc was because he was protecting his crew, right? Right, he only cares about the women. Yep, he definitely doesn’t dedicate his entire life to protecting other people, he definitely doesn’t put everyone else’s lives before his own, he’s definitely not the most selfless character in the series, he’s definitely not the kindest character in the series. Nope, he’s not protective of anyone except the girls. Liking girls is his only personality trait

not to derail your feelings on the situation, but i should point out that op said, “sanji is not an overtly protective person” instead of saying, “sanji is not an overly protective person” that’s a very important differentiation. 

Nevermind, turns out I just can't read... again. At least you guys aren't really bad at interpreting Sanji's personality, but I'm so on edge about it all the time because over half the fandom is.
