Ya know, now that I’m thinking about it, Sam was so unsurprised that Bucky just showed up unannounced at his work. Like he literally had no shock even though Bucky had been ignoring him and basically was MIA, Sam wasn’t like ‘wtf???’ bc it was out of nowhere, he wasn’t confused or questioning. Sam really just was like ‘omg here we go with the bullshit 🙄🙄’ and was waiting for Bucky to just go away and leave him be. And bc of that, I bet it’s not the first time. I definitely feel like Bucky pulled up on him randomly before, was ridiculous and annoying for a bit, and then went back to ghosting him, so Sam was totally unfazed when Bucky did it again.

Coming back to an Isaiah Bradley thought I had during tfatws that I didn't post bc I didn't have tumblr:

I found it really interesting and impactful that both Sam and Bucky can each relate to and understand one significant part of Isaiah's trauma, but neither of them can truly fathom it as a whole.

Sam understands, for one, the racial aspect. The way it wears on a person through their whole life to be subtly or directly pushed down and out of things, always struggling to do the best thing you can do and being ignored or punished for it anyway. Living in distrust of the systems in place because they've always been designed against you, or choosing to risk trusting them for the sake of others and then getting burned. Existing in a place where a lot of people simply can't comprehend all the ways things are different for you.

In addition, he deeply understands losing people, losing time with people, and the way that grief can be unspeakable. Both Isaiah and Sam have lost so many people, both in the military and in their personal lives (as well as having kids in their family that they cared about and missing part of their upbringing), and I think that emotional understanding of loss isn't something that can be undone. They will always share that. For Sam, he keeps going. He's been beaten down by the world, and badly, but not so much that he feels he can't get back up. That's the difference. It's only through empathy that he can process Isaiah's inability to be passionate about that after everything he's been through.

Bucky, on the other hand, understands the torture, imprisonment and experimentation part, and the ugly and irreversible things that does to a person. What it's like to be treated as less than human, a lab rat, a tool in a machine, tortured and imprisoned for decades, having almost nothing left when he finally got out. The exhaustion. The emptiness. The disillusionment, wondering if it's worth it to hold on to anything anymore. It's a reality not everybody experiences, especially not to the extent either of them did. And I think that's why he understood that Isaiah didn't want to be revealed to the world. He was too tired for justice; he just wanted peace.

(Ring a bell?)

Sam wanted to have known about this guy, the legendary things that he did, and the tragedy he experienced, which is fair.

But Bucky wanted Isaiah to have what he himself was still trying to find.

Neither Bucky nor Sam had all the pieces to the puzzle. But I think both of them felt that there was an homage, maybe even something attempting to be justice for Isaiah in Sam becoming Cap. Even though it was Sam's decision and no one else's, there was definitely an element there of honoring the history, and the person left out of the books.

And of course, there's the fact that Sam got him an exhibit in the Smithsonian. That scene was just...special. Carl Lumbly's acting was subtle but very raw, and it was all just perfectly done. I'll never get over the way he was shaking while hugging Sam. Things like that scene are why tfatws came out on top to me out of the three shows. It wasn't huge and cosmic, it just dealt with very lifelike people and their struggles and their pasts. It was zoomed in to the finest detail, and that's part of what made it really work. It's probably why I am and still will be writing meta on it quite a while after it's been out.

Sam’s Music (Recommendations) Headcanon

//hc that Sam has a pretty wide knowledge base of music throughout the last century. he listens to a wide variety of artists and genres and styles, but of course Black artists tend to be higher on his favorites list since their experiences are closer to home.

Growing up in Louisiana means he had more influences from local (ie Creole and Cajun) culture and jazz and blues and swamp and swing--most of which were also live performances of course--from Mardi Gras and other festivals and festivities in/near New Orleans and in his sleepy hometown of Delacroix.

Marvin Gaye is awesome but is NOT his #1 favorite artist.

Sam has different music/musical artist/soundtrack recommendations for different people, depending on who they are (both personally and who they are in relation to sam). Marvin Gaye was his recommendation for steve. if bucky wanted recs Sam would give different artists to Bucky and take him to live performances to reintroduce the man to music and Sam’s own love of music. If others were to ask him he’d have a different artist recommendation for them. Chances are, they’d all be Black artists because yup.

(the only reason sam brought marvin gaye up in tfatws was to use the commonality sam knows bucky knows he had with steve as a distraction for bucky being hyperfocused on zemo taking something so personal from bucky without his consent. zemo absolutely was in the wrong there but they’re in a plane and sam doesn’t need a fight happening there)

//friendly reminder that Steve being Army Captain (officer rank) and Bucky being Army Sergeant (NCO/enlisted rank (but yknow, drafted)) means they can’t be romantically involved together

Sam being Air Force Captain and Bucky being retired old man (or even if still active duty Army Sergeant by tfatws/caatws - which god i hope he isn’t) means they can

thanks for coming to my ted talk

// sam wilson physicality meta/headcanons:

just gonna dump a bunch of stuff i think fits him but especially for my muse because im in far too deep and can’t stop now this is absolutely a sam wilson appreciation post but specifically about his stupidly hot body and how it works

  • he voluntarily joined the experimental Falcon program (pre-catws) - how many humans (not mutants, iron man suits, etc) that fly on just a set of mechanical wings were there before the program? that’s right, none - ive had a headcanon since catws where tony stark created the program on the side because pararescuemen (what sam did before joining the falcon program) saved him from the desert (1st iron man movie meta) check it out here (tfatws confirmed Falcon wings are stark tech!!) - we know sam wasn’t the only one in the program. we know there were casualties/deaths (re: sam’s wingman riley) - sam is clearly not over riley but he got back on the wings because captain america needed his help regardless. he is well aware of the inherent dangers. went for it anyway.
  • i don’t think fans give enough credit to how much time and effort it would take for a human to be able to fly around as he did as the Falcon?? - like imagine a bird. they steer with their wings. unless there’s some sorta brain signal reading chip in his falcon googles, im 99.9% sure his wing control isn’t directly done from his brain. which means that shit’s all done from his SHOULDERS/BACK MUSCLES - imagine a bird, part 2. tails. sam’s CORE/ABS/HIPS/LOWER SPINE/LEGS/FEET are the equivalent to bird’s tail when he’s out flying. imagine how much he needs those muscles to be strong enough to do barrel rolls and crazy maneuvers in mid air. strong af. (also good to have those muscles for some more homey activities too amirite *coughs*)
  • see that ‘voluntarily’ used up there in the first bullet? he signed up for this shit himself - as in he saw the opportunity to be a daredevil and just. went and did the thing. also means he wasn’t drafted.
  • imagine how many times he fell/crashed/blacked out in the air and fell outta the sky during the falcon training - imagine him having all sorts of wounds and scars on his body from just trying to fly and a lot of the time not being successful at it, until he finally does. probably used to having his own body thrown around so much so that what the winter soldier did to him on the helicarrier wasn’t even that much of a threat (i mean, sure, scary af mf but sam has experience being thrown around and knows how to stay calm and rational even in those situations)
  • how many (flying) birds do you know has more muscles than being built light-weight for flight? - this may be just me but i hc that before the tfatws training montage, sam wilson’s physcial training focused more on enhancing his cardio/heart (we see him running. a lot)/flexibility/shortening reaction time, ie, ones that are ideal for and benefit flying, NOT beefing up muscles - probably eats like a bird (among other things small bits throughout the day rather than full meals) - tfatws training montage is definitely for beefing up muscles and learning more close quarter combat, which he has knowledge of from the pararescue days (ie, ask rumlow) but not to this extent. because he’s gotta get ready to be Cap. he’s not a super soldier and has no super human powers or super strength but he has a cool new suit that allows for more.....muscles because well, cap can’t disappoint on the muscles front, right? - probably eats a lot more less like a bird.. or a very beefy bird
  • he went up against the winter soldier and then mindcontrolled bucky and survived all encounters - if you don’t think he’s gonna count that as a (weird) flex, you’re prob wrong
  • brought a 2in pocket knife to a gun fight and came out of that alive, unharmed, and with a gun

point being, whether he has a danger kink (don’t kink shame) or just happens to find himself in danger, a lot, he’s risen to the challenge every time. mostly by improving what he can do and how he can help others. he’s not weak by any means. he has taken a lot of hits and gotten back up each time.

tldr; this post only focused on his body and not even on any of his other overqualified skills. sam wilson (and his body) is an underappreciated gift and does not need super powers to be the most fitting person to take over as cap Sam Wilson is absolutely Captain America
