Nerdy Fact #1434: Wonder Woman was originally based on two women: the wife of creator William Marston and one of his former students that both he and his wife had sexual encounters with.
(Source.)
How about you actually name ‘em?
Elizabeth Holloway Marston and Olive Byrne were among a number of women who contributed to the original Wonder Woman, and they’re fascinating people in their own right.
Elizabeth Holloway Marston was a brilliant woman. She earned three university degrees in psychology and law at a time when few women received any tertiary education. She was a successful career woman who assisted her husband with his work and was frequently the breadwinner of the family.
The main reason she was able to continue working after having children? Olive Byrne, who was not simply a casual “sexual encounter”, but the Marstons’ lover and life partner. To enable Elizabeth to work, Olive stayed at home and raised both her and Elizabeth’s children. She also wrote for Family Circle and contributed to Marston’s research.
Elizabeth is credited with pushing her husband to create a female superhero, and after his death she worked hard to preserve his vision for the character, urging DC to employ her as the comic’s editor (she was ignored).
Wonder Woman’s bracelet’s are Olive’s bracelets: Olive was known for wearing a pair of wide silver bracelets, and Marston had these in mind when he envisioned Diana’s bullet-deflecting accessories.
Marston died in 1947, but Elizabeth and Olive continued to live together until the end of their lives.
Wait. Clarification please. Are you telling me that the creator of Wonder WOMAN WAS IN A POLY-AMOROUS RELATIONSHIP?
Yep! They were in a poly relationship and had four children together, two by Elizabeth and two by Olive.
(And for those who’ve asked about sources, the Marstons’ story is covered in detail in The Secret History of Wonder Woman by Jill Lepore and Wonder Woman: The Complete History by Les Daniels)
Wonder Woman was inspired and shaped by not only a man who was incredibly progressive and awesome by todays standards let alone the standards of the day he lived in but also by a fierce, intelligent and awesome bisexual woman
This is one of the many reasons why the ways DC has ruined Wonder Woman in their pursuit of making the book as backwards and heteronormative as possible pisses me off…
Not a fierce and intelligent and awesome bisexual woman.
Two fierce and intelligent and awesome bisexual women.
You are correct :D
Imagine growing up in that house
“Mom wants to see you.”
“Psychology mom or bracelet mom?”
“Bracelet mom.”
According to Lepore, the kids called Elizabeth “Keetie” and Olive “Dotsie”!
That is adorable.
I have reblogged this before and will continue to do it until the day I die. The origin story of WW comics is as fucking great as the character herself.
Fun fact: Olive’s bracelets were a gift from William and Elizabeth, and were basically an alternative to a wedding ring, since she couldn’t legally marry them. Diana’s bracelets, 70+ years later, are a symbol of that relationship.
Another fun fact: There’s a movie coming out about their relationship, starring Luke Evans and Rebecca Hall and Bella Heathcote that was written AND directed by a woman (Angela Robinson)

captain america: the winter soldier // captain america: civil war
I think with Sam and Cap there’s never a question of how far they’re willing to go because they take care of each other, they look out for each other and they believe in each other. I think Sam becoming an avenger and Sam being on team Cap is not because of his relationship with Cap but because of what happened in Captain America: Winter Soldier. He literally, when fighting SHIELD, lost all of his faith in these government agencies because it was infiltrated by HYDRA. So you never know when someone has your best interests in mind and he knows Cap does. - Anthony Mackie
“Dropping the shield is a rejection of the Captain America identity and a choice to embrace the Steve Rogers identity,” Anthony Russo says.
please don’t forget that steve didn’t just drop the shield in cacw to show he’s choosing to protect bucky—he also dropped it to show he’s choosing himself. bucky, and his friendship, and the connection to the past that he represents, is of course an inextricable part of that self. but bucky isn’t the only part.
captain america, the mantle that steve’s worn for so long, is arguably most visible through this shield. it was created for captain america. it is his best and most enduring and most recognizable weapon. the shield represents all the honor of the role, and all the responsibility of the role, and all the heaviness of the role. it’s a literal weight to carry. one that people who matter to steve (natasha, bucky, others) have picked up time to time in battle, a metaphorical sharing of the burden.
make no mistake—steve can carry the weight of the shield. he wears it well. he is captain america, insomuch that captain america is the persona the world needed to give him so he was allowed to use his powers to actually do something. but as soon as this mantle, this title, this legacy, this shield, becomes representative of someone else’s ideals rather than his own, steve makes a decision:
drop it.
when he leaves the shield in that bunker in siberia, he’s leaving behind a lot of things: his role on a team that felt more like someone else’s family than his own; the identity created for him by 70 years in the ice and never recrafted to fit who steve was when he got unfrozen; the expectations placed on him by the world at large based on that identity; the need to put faith in and take orders from and represent institutions he’s progressively been losing trust in since the WSC ordered a nuke to hit NYC.
when he leaves the shield in that bunker in siberia, he’s leaving behind captain america as the 21st century has created him.
he’s choosing himself. he’s choosing steve. he’s choosing to be steve. free to put faith in people, individuals. free to stand up for what he believes in. free to be flawed. free to explore who steve even is, in this new world.
like i said—it’s huge that steve gives up the shield with bucky’s arm thrown around his shoulder, but that’s because bucky is a part of steve. and steve is the most important thing being reclaimed, defended, and protected in that final scene.
College AU (Version 2)
Basically Version 1 but with some add-ons/slight changes
Bucky is still the newbie!transfer student.
The college that he is attending has an amazing art program so Steve and he are still partners in crime.
Sam and Natasha are RAs
Bucky first meets Sam at the hospital. Yes, the hospital.
He’s recovering from getting sideswiped and nearly killed by some drunken asshole (Brock Rumlow). Seeing an opportunity Alexander Pierce, being the smart rich man that he is, decides to play upon both the media sympathy and the poorness of Bucky’s family.
He gives Bucky a top of the line prosthetic arm. The arm moves like the real thing, it taps into Bucky’s senses (it’s not perfect). The most jarring thing about it is the shiny metal. The noises it makes when he tries to make a fist or he accidentally hits something.
The media loves it, Pierce is a hero in their eyes and the Barnes family (mostly the parents) is grateful if not confused as to why a man like Pierce is out of the blue helping them.
Darlene Wilson, Bucky’s doctor, doesn’t trust Pierce as far as she can throw him but she doesn’t say anything because the Barnes seem okay with the procedure.
She sees a blonde boy comes in to visit everyday. Usually accompanied by brown haired girl. Bucky, unfortunately lost his memory in the accident and with the added pressure of what was currently going on he shuts down. Sometimes lashes out.
But the blonde keeps coming.
" It’s my fault Peggy…he wouldn’t have been in that car if I hadn’t asked."
" Steve, this isn’t your fault. There is absolutely no way you could’ve known…."
When her eldest son comes to volunteer (like he usually does, after delivering something nice for his mom to eat.) she assigns him to James Buchanan.
" He needs some healing Sammy. More than just physical."
" Just call me Mr. Sunshine then."
Sam does his best, but Bucky is a tough nut to crack. The nurses and other volunteers call him the “Winter Soldier”. Sam doesn’t repeat it but he knows that Bucky knows.
He asks him, instead, what he would like to be called.
"James."
" Okay."
" But…"
" But?"
" My friends call me Bucky." Sam smiles at that. Laughs even.
" Oh so we’re friends now? Man, you have giving me hell for months."
Bucky smirks and becomes a little coy, ” Hey, I don’t come cheap. I gotta make you work for it before I just give it all way.”
Bucky is flirting, he’s laying it on THICK.
But somehow Sam still doesn’t pick up on it. According to Steve, Sam is sharp as a tac with everything but relationships. Well, actually really good at relationships but he’s dense when it comes to when people are flirting with him.
How Steve know this exactly Bucky hasn’t asked yet. He has his suspicions but given the fact he seems totally into that Peggy girl he supposes Sam is a free-agent.
Plucking up the courage after one of their group therapy meetings to ask him out on a date (cafeteria date, Dr. Wilson hasn’t discharged him yet.)
Sam drops a bomb. He’s leaving to go back to school and this will be their last meeting with him as youth leader.
Bucky takes it a little hard, he remembers faintly Sam saying something about going back to school. The sinking feeling of being being closed in starts to hit him again He wants out, not just because Sam’s leaving but just wants to restart his life. He feels like he’s been on ice for so long. So he works harder in his physical therapy. He’s nicer to the people outside of his clique (the wilsons, steve and peggy).
Dr. Wilson finally gives the okay for him to leave.
" I wanna take the GRE, the SAT, whatever the hell test I need to do. I want to go to college. Get a fresh start."
" Buck, this is a lot to take on. You need to take it easy. You’re still recovering."
Bucky stops drinking his glass of milk. ” YOU are seriously telling ME to take things easy?” Steve flushes a little.
" The school term is about start, there’s no time…"
" Are you with me Rogers or not?"
Steve let’s out a fake dramatic put upon sigh, ” To the end of the line, unfortunately.”
Bucky smirks, ” Good, because we got a lot work to do.”
He waits for Steve to breathe
