"Look at him," said Carmilla. "Sound asleep, yet still scowling. It's almost sort of tragic. But I will say, he is kind of cute when he's asleep."

The Night Creature didn't respond, simply staring at her as she spoke. The monster couldn't speak, nor did it show any sort of acknowledge of what she said.

The only sound it made was a low grumble in its throat.

Dracula began to stir. He was awoken by the scent of the bird.

The creature looked over in his direction. Usually irked by vampires, it let out another rumble, low and gravely. Its yellow eyes reflected the firelight.

It had no reason to stay, but the overpowering sense of sadness drew it closer.

The creature walked into Dracula's room.

"Carmilla, I don't recall mentioning the allowance of pets."

"Think of this one as a gift, my lord, from me to you."

The creature snarled at Carmilla, the sound reverberating through the skull that encased its face.

It didn't take kindly to being called a pet, let alone a gift.

"I suppose we can find some sort of use for the beast. I'll just need some time to think."

The Creature's tail flicked. The beast didn't take kindly to being spoken about in a way the diminished it.

Dracula tried reading the creature's mind. (Can you hear my thoughts?)

The creature's mind was filled with swimming voices, each crying out with a different plea.

"Kill this man!"

"Save my children!"

"Find my missing lover!"

....and so on.

Some disappeared faster than others, too weak to hold on to consciousness and soon faded away.

But one voice was clearest amongst the others.

"Is someone there?" it asked, the voice of a young man.

"And who is this I'm hearing?" Dracula asked.

"Depends on who you ask," the voice said, clearer and more stable than any of the others. "I don't remember my name. But I remember that I was a soldier."

"I....I think I died."

"There are far worse things than death." said Dracula. "But enough about that. Who are you? Who am I speaking to?"

"I don't know," the voice said. "I can see you. I am looking at you. I think that woman called us a pet. I don't like that term."

"Carmilla has a rather irritating sense of superiority about her. Ignore it. From now on, the only words you need to worry about are mine."

The voice was silent for some time, overwhelmed by the sounds of other voices.

"I prefer not to be a pet. I hope that doesn't come off as rude. What purpose do you have here? Talking to a dead man."

Dracula's eyes turned red and the air around him caught fire.

"I am not a man. Men are weak, ignorant, and vile in nature. Men have destroyed this world to fill their pockets and coin purses. Men burned my wife at the stake over something they were too ignorant to understand. No. I am not a man. I am what men fear. I am a monster."

The Night Creature's eyes only stared back, studying his face.

"I am monster," one of the many other voices whispered before creating a collective, drowning out the voice of the young man.

Before his voice disappeared completely, he said, "I am protector of humans."

"Not anymore." said Dracula. "Now, you are a slayer of humans."

"Slayer...." the voices said, turning into a mangled mess before screaming out in unison.

"Slayer of vampires! Protector of humans! Killer of monsters!"

The Night Creature roared, its large body standing up as tall as it could.

"Then BURN!"

Dracula used his dark powers to set the ground beneath the creature's feet on fire.

The Night Creature roared, clashing against the walls as it rushed for the exit. Barreling into the hallway, it looked back to Dracula, the sacks on its throat quivering as it let out another guttural hiss.

"Harm not me. We hurt not you."

"My patience has reached its end, beast. If you are not going to aide me, then you are to stay out of my way."

"Try," it hissed. "Try we may. Meeting is inevitable, I fear."

"Would be easier if I were a bit higher ranked as a Cloud Knight," he whispered. "I'm just a Cadet right now. I've barely done anything besides patrols. Haven't even fought that many Mara Struck."

"Come on, just try, Your rank doesn't mean anything i'm sure of it."

Baiheng says with a smile

"Worse she can say is 'Fight me in a duel and I'll consider it.' Fufu~"

Baiheng says with a cheerful demeanor not even realizing how absurd that sounds.

He scratches the back of his head and hunches his shoulders.

"N-not a 'she'," he muttered. "And rank does matter. In this case at least."

His tails, despite being massive feathers, were practically wagging a tiny bit.

He still appeared very nervous.

"Oh? Well worst he can say is the same thing!"

Baiheng giggles

"Nonsense, your rank only matters at work! Not in your love life."

"Don't miss your opportunity!!"

Baiheng says encouragingly not even knowing who it is.

He covered his face and began to pace back and forth.

"But the problem is it is someone I work with! He's way out of my league! He has his own regiment and everything!"

He had already gone through this whole song and dance with Shiwen and Shufen. At one point he tried talking to Dan Feng, but that was like making conversation with a brick wall.

"I also thought this until i tried, So you should try at-least once."

"Anyway if it's someone you work with, Mind telling me Kai?"

Baiheng says cheerfully still, she wants to give him confidence after all

"Maybe i can give you some helpful advice."

He starts laughing nervously.

"Hahaha, no. No way. If you knew, then we'd both be at a loss for what to do."

"I mean, how could someone like him ever get with someone like me. I'm kinda boring. Just some guy."

"And he's....important."

"Awww, Why not Kai?? I want to know!"

Baiheng says whining a little before sighing.

"You aren't boring at all! Don't ever say that again!"

"And you aren't just 'some guy' either, you are Kai, one of the best Cadets in the cloud knights!"

Baiheng huffs, she might be exaggerating a little but Kai couldn't just say he's 'just some guy and he's boring' unacceptable...oh and she's definitely bias about him being the best cadet...

"Normal people have normal crushes. I of course had to fall for someone who's like five ranks above me. I'll never get on his level."

His ears drooped.

"I mean, I haven't even spoken to him. Unless you count that one time I was on bathroom cleanup, and he walked in on me complaining about my commander."

Baiheng says cheerfully.

"Oh really? I still think you have a chance hehehe..."

"You should go talk to them some more then, get to know each other."

Kai struggled to find the right words.

"I'm sure that lieutenant was a cadet at some point, doesn't matter if what rank you are, you should always care about the people under you and aren't we talking about romance? How does your ranking to a lieutenant have anything to do with being in love with someone?"

"Why would that matter Kai?"

"Well, he's not a cadet anymore!" he tried to argue. "He barely knows me outside being a friend of a friend.

He rubbed the back of his neck, his tails curling around his legs in anxious movements.

"Wouldn't it be kind of demeaning to him, someone who's practically a Luofu celebrity, to date....well, me?"

"Why are you being so stubborn about this?"

Baiheng argues back as she gets frustrated.

"If he barely knows you, then go get to know him...Is it that hard?"

Baiheng sighs in a annoyed tone

"Why would it be demeaning if a Luofu celebrity dates you? and why are you emphasizing you in particular."

Baiheng crosses her arms and flattens her ears.

"Is that so? Who doesn't like you on the Luofu and why? Everyone i talk to say you are a decent person." Baiheng probably doesn't realize that no one would want to get on her bad side by talking about one of her friends badly.

He stammers trying to hide his face. Eventually he decides he can't keep it from Baiheng anymore.

"It's...someone we both know. He's an important Luofu figure. And is a member of the Cloud Knights."

At the mention of the current Cloud Knight Lieutenant, Kai's face heated up again.

His tails curled inwards around his legs, as if to make themselves smaller.

Baiheng bursts into laughter as he yells it's not Yingxing and says gross over and over.

"Ehehe...Okay so it's either Jingliu or Jing Yuan, Probably Jing Yuan based on your reaction..."

"It would be a shame if i told him about this on our next meet up~"

Baiheng says mischievously, but of course she is joking and would never do that unless Kai wanted her too.

"You should go for it Kai~ I believe in you, Jing yuan is nowhere near as scary as you think he is."

"I know he's not scary," Kai said, crossing his arms.

"It's just....he has so many eyes on him. He's going places, and always has been. It took me so long just for me to get here."

He deserved someone on the same level is what Kai wanted to say but couldn't.

"That and I'm sure he's too busy."

"Mhm..."

Baiheng giggles

"And? What's the problem? Don't tell me you think you aren't enough, That's not true at all, You are just fine for him just like anyone else."

Baiheng crosses her arms with a huff

"It's probably true he is busy but you can always schedule with him."

"That's the thing. I'm not 'anyone else'. I'm...odd. I'm different in a way that isn't normal. I wouldn't want to bug him with my weird diet, or the special stuff I need to use on my feathers."

Kai rubbed a hand over the back of his neck.

"Or my fire. That'd probably weird him out too."

"His schedule is always busy. I couldn't possibly do anything to change that."

"How is there anything wrong with that! You Oddness is what separates you from everyone else!"

Baiheng says in a annoyed tone at Kai saying he's weird and odd

"Stop acting like you are worse than him Kai!"

"And your fire wouldn't weird him out, And if you need Scheduling, I can handle that~"

Kai chuckled a bit.

"What are you playing wingman now?" he asked with a jesting tone.

"I thought that was my job. Y'know, if you do this for me, which I hope you don't, I have to return the favor."

Kai was always adamant about returning favors.

"If i have to be one, I will be for you Kai~ Because you have a case of self depreciation on thinking you aren't good enough for Jing Yuan."

Baiheng grins mischievously

"You don't have to return the favor, but i'm not going to stop you from either."

Kai's movements froze as he realized the pickle he got himself into.

"Don't....Don't do that," he said.

"I'll handle it. I'll figure out a solution. It'll be fine. What matters is that I keep my job."

Baiheng giggles cheerfully

"Okay, Okay I won't Kai~"

"But i'm always available to help you, You don't ever have to do anything alone Kai~"

"You won't lose your job on my watch unless you actually did something bad."

"Oh please," he said, "when would I ever do something bad."

It's not misbehaving he was worried about. It was who's in charge that got his anxiety rolling.

Though he knew Baiheng would most definitely have his back.

He's used to keep on going, even if injured, which has lead to him having a rather high pain tolerance. Something as minor as bruises are rarely noticed unless they are on a place where he can easily see them.

This time, it's not.

"Huh?" Genuinely not knowing what Kai is talking about, the teen follows his gaze down to his own calf. A large bruise is covering the entire visible area of his calf, disappearing behind both boot and trousers. "Huh?" he says again. "I... don't know. Training, I guess. It's just a bruise."

Kai hummed, looking back down at the paper he was reading. Giving the other Cloud Knight an approving signature, he sent them on their way. Then he looked back at Yanqing, then his bruise.
