Rain Dances - a wandanat fic
Rainy dances a Wandanat mini fic When Natasha lets Wanda burrow a dress for her brothers funeral, Wanda tries to return it on a rainy day, only for the redhead to take her dancing.
To preface: I am not Romani, or jewish but those are integral parts to Wanda and Pietro’s character, so i wanted to include that. I used this article for information, but if any information is off please tell me and i will attempt to fix it. https://blog.sevenponds.com/cultural-perspectives/fearing-the-return-of-the-dead-in-romani-burial-traditions
Droplets pelted the high window, dripping down slowly, leaving behind long wet lines on the glass. The window was cold to the touch, damp and refreshing on Wanda’s skin.
Sitting on the small window ledge, Wanda looked out at the rainy fields around the compound. Rain poured and puddles grew on the one road back to the city. The sound of the rain hitting the window was soothing, drawing Wanda into a calm silence.
It had been a week since she and the other Avengers moved into the compound, two since she agreed to be an Avenger, and a month since the loss of her brother.
A few boxes were piled around her room, waiting to be unpacked. Books that Natasha had brought her to read, a tarot card deck Clint had picked up, and a few piles of folded clothes lay discarded around the brunette's room. A small bed in the corner, the covers unmade, was where Wanda normally spent her days, wrapped up and safe in her comforter. But today the rainy scene had drawn her out of her blankets.
The window was fogging, ever so slowly. Wanda took her finger and traced out a heart in the fog, a small smile crossed her lips.
Three weeks ago, Wanda had helped put her brother's body in the ground. It had rained just like it was on this day. She couldn’t bury him in the remains of Sokovia, so Clint took her to his farm. They found an old willow tree, and with the help of Natasha and Steve, dug a hole for her brother's coffin.
Wanda remembered the morning of, she had been a mess, crying and panicked because she didn’t have a white dress. When Wanda was little, a member of her parent’s band had passed away. She remembered how her mother and father, and their friends had fasted, how they burnt the dead’s possessions, and how those who mourned wore white.
Wanda must have been no more than six, but she remembered every detail. Her mother had made her repeat them back at her over and over, not just the funeral traditions, but anything of their culture, after the Sokovian police had forced their stay in Sokovia.
It was what got Wanda through long nights of testing and experiments after being kidnapped by Hydra, repeating the traditions and customs of her family. Committing them to memory in hopes that once she escaped, she would be able to practice them once again.
She had followed everything through. She hadn’t eaten or drunk anything but coffee, she had collected the small possessions that Pietro had, his Star of David, and his running shirt he loved so much. She knew that she could technically just sell them, but she wanted to follow through, so they had burned them that morning. It had been so long since she and Peitro had been able to embrace their culture, that she wanted him to have a proper Romani send off.
Which was why she had been freaking out when she had overlooked the smallest detail. She didn’t have anything white to wear. She had been lucky that Natasha had found her when she did, crying with Barton's darts, red, and ready to spear the next person who walked in.
Natasha had hugged her and offered her one of her own white dresses, it was slightly too small, and the short sleeves didn’t look right, but Natasha just handed Wanda her red leather jacket and told her it was going to be okay.
The two walked to the willow, hand in hand. The red head held the brunnette as she cried. The rain poured as Peitro’s body was lowered into the earth by Clint and Steve. In the end, the redhead stayed with Wanda even as the rain turned to a storm, and as the dirt turned to mud around the little grave marked “Pietro Django Maximoff ''.
Now Wanda sat looking out the window at the rainy day, numb, and tracing the fog on her window. The white dress laid out, cleaned, and folded on top of one of the boxes, yet to be returned. The leather jacket strung across the brunette’s dark shoulders.
She was tired. It had taken most of her energy to cross the room to the window, and most days she didn't have half as much. She had lost interest in most things, closing herself away in the tiny room, only leaving her bed for the window or the meals left at her door.
She knew something was wrong. She knew it was wrong to wish it had been her instead of Peitro, she knew it had been wrong to try and stay on the falling Sokovia so that she would die with it, only saved by Vision, she knew it was wrong to only have the energy to lie around her room all day. But who would even listen.
Wanda let her head drop back against the wall. She sighed, closing her eyes, as she moved a curly strand of hair from her face, the white dress bright and demanding.
Wanda hadn’t seen Natasha since the funeral, and she hadn’t seen her much before it. Yet the women had still shown her so much kindness in one afternoon. She hadn’t even said thank you. Instead she had cried herself to sleep in the redheads arms and woken up in her room, peppermint tea by her bedside, still hot.
Now the unreturned white dress stared at her, tempting her.
Slowly the witch stood up. Red wisps circled her arms and the white dress before it lifted above the box and came flying towards her. Wanda stood there in her empty room holding it, her eyes on the door.
Slowly her foot took a step and then another. The exhaustion clung to her like a warm blanket but he kept walking, white dress in hand.
Peering out of her door into the long barren hallway, she found it empty. One step in front of the other she wandered the halls, white and grey, till she found the Black Widows room.
Standing there Wanda started to doubt herself. What if Natasha was on a mission, or what if Natasha didn’t want to see her? Wanda could feel the thoughts seep in, begging her to go back to her room where it was safe, where she couldn’t hurt anyone. Out of habit, Wanda reached up and held her Star of David necklace, twisting it in between her fingers.
Taking a deep breath, she lowered her hand and knocked.
There was silence for a few seconds before the door knob turned and Natasha stood in front of the brunette. The red head's hair was pulled back in a tiny ponytail that stuck out, and she wore a simple white tank top. Her muscles showed as her scars rippled across her skin.
Wanda could feel her heart flutter as she looked at the black widow, and her mouth went dry. Without thinking she quickly pushed the white dress onto Natasha. The red head smiled and took it from Wanda raising an eyebrow.
“Do you want to come in?”
The exhaustion that clung to Wanda told her to say no, to go back to bed, to go back to her window, but Wanda didn’t listen. She nodded a little nervously before following Natasha into her room.
Natashas’s room was free of boxes, instead it had a large bed in the corner, two armchairs and a coffee table in another and a small kitchen area. Wanda couldn’t help but feel jealous, she had been given just a room, while Natasha had been given something she could live in.
That’s when Wanda noticed the lack of decoration. Although the red headed room was bigger and had larger furniture, it was rather barren. There were no flowers or magazines on the coffee table, no photos or paintings on the walls, and nothing on the shelf’s.
Natasha handed Wanda a mug of steaming tea. Wanda looked at it and back at the Black Widow.
“It’s peppermint.” As the woman smiled, warmth flooded through the brunette. A small sip of the tea confirmed the redhead statement.
“Look, If you don’t want to talk, that's okay.” Natasha started towards one of the arm chairs and gestured for Wanda to sit with her.
The two sat in silence, the sound of the rain the only sound in the room.
“How did you know I liked peppermint?” Wanda muttered.
“You mentioned it when you were… you told me at his funeral.” Natasha took a sip of her tea, but her eyes didn’t seem to leave Wanda. The avoidance of his name made the doubt creep back in.
“Did you leave the tea for me?”
“Yes.” Natasha smiled softly.
“Why?”
“You looked like you’d need it.” She paused, “You said it always calmed you.”
Wanda nodded, staring at her tea.
“Thank you.” The witch’s hand went to her necklace in habit and started playing with it. “Thank you for being there.”
“Us girls have to stick together.” Natasha tried to laugh but it didn’t last. “I’ve been in a similar situation.”
Wanda looked up doubtfully. “Do you have a sibling?”
“A sister, yes.” Natasha's eyes finally dropped from the brunette. “I lost her when I was young.”
“I’m sorry.”
“Don’t be, it wasn’t your fault.”
Wanda nodded before looking up at Natasha, who’s eyes were still on her tea, absent middle stirring it with her spoon. Wanda lifted her hand and watched as a cloud of red surrounded it, she focused on the spoon and watched as it was wrapped in red, much to Natasha’s surprise. Wanda smiled before lifting the spoon out of Natasha's grasp and flying it towards her. She promently caught and started to stir her own tea.
“Little witch.” Natasha smirked.
“Why don’t you have anything on your shelves?”
“Oh.” Natasha paused looking around, “I’ve never been one for sentimental things, I have this need to be able to run at any moment.”
Wanda nodded remembering what she had seen in the vision she had given the Black Widow.
“I’m sorry about that.” Wanda didn’t really know what to say, so she took another sip of tea.
“Once again little witch, it's not your fault.”
Wanda nodded before drinking the last of her tea, savoring the mint flavor.
“More?” The redhead asked.
“I’m alright, but thank you.” Wanda smiled.
“Are your eyes deceiving me? Is the little witch smiling?” Natasha laughed, getting a little chuckle out of Wanda. The red head got up to take Wanda’s cup as their hands brushed across each other. Wanda quickly looked away as her heart started to flutter again as Natasha took the cups away.
“Natasha?”
“Yes Wanda?”
Wanda was quiet, finding the words. She could trust Natasha right?
“Wanda?”
“Yeah, um, things haven’t been good.”
Natsaha returned, taking a seat once again, her eyes trained on the brunette. “Alright, explain.”
“I don’t know how to explain it. I feel so tired, all the time. I don’t have energy, I just want to hide away.” Wanda hadn’t even noticed till now she was holding her Star of David again. “I just, he’s gone and he was my other half, and I'm scared I’m going to hurt someone.” Wanda could feel herself get more frantic as her words came quicker and quicker. “I’m scared to leave my room, I’m scared to talk to others. But I’m lonely, I feel all alone. I am all alone. I’m in a new country, all alone.” Wanda paused taking a breath
“You're not alone.” Natasha's voice was smooth and comforting. As she got up and walked towards Wanda, wrapping her in a hug. It took Wanda a few seconds before she hugged back and started crying.
The two stood like that for a while, embracing each other, before Natasha pulled away, leaving Wanda missing the redhead's warmth.
“You are not alone. You have me, Clint, Vision, and Steve. My door’s always open if you need to talk okay?” Natasha took Wanda’s hand. “What would make you feel better right now?”
“I don't know.” Wanda mumbled, Natasha reached up and started to wipe Wanda’s cheeks.
“Do you like the rain?”
“What?”
Natasha's worried frown turned to a smile as she opened her wardrobe and took out two raincoats. “Let’s take a walk.”
The red head grabbed a speaker, her phone, an umbrella before returning to the confused brunette.
“Come on little witch, trust me.” Natasha extended her hand.
And Wanda took it.
Before Wanda knew it the two were running down the compound's hallway, and out the doors into the pouring rain. The storm raged as the two hid under an umbrella that treated and shifted with the wind. Natasha took out her phone and searched for a song that Wanda didn't see. The speaker, which was in Natasha's pocket, started to play and Natasha took Wanda’s hand.
“Let’s dance in the rain.”
“You're crazy.”
“Trust me.”
Natasha smiled before spinning Wanda who rolled her eyes, but a smile graced her lips.
The two twirled each other to an upbeat song, one Wanda didn’t think the Black Widow to be into, which made her wonder if she picked it out for Wanda. Motherless, the two jumped around, spinning and dancing in the the puddles as the storm rained on,
Soon Natasha told Wanda to do a little dance all on her own, and the brunette froze before awkwardly stepping back and forth. Natasha rolled her eyes and did a horrible impression of a duck dance.
The brunette erupted into laughter and two started dancing together, discarding the umbrella as the wind picked up and rain poured down on them. Their faces drenched, their shoes soaked and their hair dripping wet, the two spun around and around. The ridulancnceness of the situation was comforting.
Eventually Wanda slipped in a puddle landing on her back. Instead of getting up she just stared at the clouds. Without thinking Natasha joined her and two laid there, hand in hand, as the rain poured down on them.
“Hey Natasha?”
“Yeah little witch.”
“Would it be okay if I kissed you?”
Natasha sat up and stared at Wanda, a confused look on her face before she chuckled. “Sure.”
Wanda sat up, cupping Natasha's face in her hands. Natasha looked into the brunette's green eyes as Wanda's face turned a shade of red. Wanda leaned forward and kissed Natasha on the forehead.
“I thought you would kiss me on the lips?” Natasha pouted, before threading her fingers through Wanda’s damp hair and pulling her close.
“I got scared.” Wanda admitted.
Natasha leaned forward and kissed the girl.
“You don’t have to be scared, little witch, you’re not alone remember?”
When Yelena and Natasha escape their past, they set up a small fish shop by the sea, but Natasha wasn’t expecting to find anything but fish in the water…
Wanda’s type is green eyed red heads
wandanat + Yelena on the run headcannons
- During Black Widow, Yelena asks if Natasha has a partner, Natasha pauses before saying yes, she has a witch girlfriend. Yelena laughs it off thinking Natasha joking. Natasha reassures her that her girlfriend is very much real. Yelena says she’ll believe it when she sees it.
- Natasha and Yelena stay in contact after taking down the red room together and message each other daily to make sure the other is okay. So when Natasha stops messaging Yelena immediately assumes something wrong. They hadn’t exchanged locations for safety reasons, so Yelena had to do her spy stuff and tracked Natasha to Wakanda.
- Of course Yelena ended up being escorted into Wakanda after she was caught sneaking in.
- She was brought to Natasha, who was sitting worriedly in a chair next to a hospital cot. Natasha was holding the hand of a sleeping brunette with bandages all over, a cast on her leg and and her arm in a swing. Natasha jumped when Yelena pulled the curtain back, so she knew something was wrong, her sister was never scared.
- They sat in the hospital room for a while as Natasha explained why she stopped messaging. A week ago she and the remainder of her free Avenger family went to rescue the part of her Avenger family that had been taken by the Raft. Among the Avengers on the raft had been Wanda, the girlfriend Natasha had mentioned, had been heavily injured and hasn’t woken up yet. Natasha hadn’t left Wanda’s side since she got her back and hadn’t been in a place to keep up with messages.
- Yelena understands and asks if they could stay with Natasha and the Avengers. And after some questions and ask arounds, she gets permission. Yelena finds it boring in Wakanda, no one to fight, but she makes sure her sisters gets food, annoying the other Avengers, and listening to Shuri talk of tech.
- When Wanda wakes up, Natasha sends Yelena a message and she rushes over to meet her sisters girlfriend. Although Wanda is drowsy and slightly drugged on pain killers, they manage a conversation. Does Wanda understand this is her girlfriend sister? Nope. Does she like Yelena? Yep.
- As Wanda gets better, Yelena offers to help with anything she can, Natasha is very grateful.
- Wanda isn’t herself, she’s distant and dazed and sometimes doesn’t know what’s going on, she’s also having trouble speaking. This scares and worries Natasha but she does her best to be patient. Yelena is the one who wonders if they talk to Wanda in Romanian or Sokovian, if it will be easier for Wanda to understand. And it works. Natasha is actually able to have sufficient conversations with Wanda. It’s not much of one but she feels like they are getting closer.
- Wanda’s wounds fully heal, and by than the Avengers have to go on the run. Because of Wanda’s mental state, Natasha decides that it would be best if they weren’t constant moving. They find a safe house on the edge of a town in Romania.
- There cover story is Natasha and Wanda are married and names are Laura and Rose. Yelena is there daughter, Peggy, who is taking break from college.
- They get a little garden there and Natasha makes sure Wanda feels safe. Yelena enjoys just being with her sister and as Wanda gets better mentally she starts mothering Yelena. Yelena jokingly calls her mama Wanda, and it sticks.
- They enjoy two years mostly cut off from the world.
- Anyway they are happy.
Broken Promises
Wandana, mostly Wanda centered Raft story because I felt angst at 3 am. Yup.
———
Time didn’t exist here.
Wanda was sure that if she could concentrate she could figure out the times the guards shifts ended, maybe track them, and learn the time that way. Just like Natasha had taught her.
But everywhere she looked the world seemed to glitch, the edges were fuzzy, the walls static. Every guard's face was blurred, erased and replaced with a blotch of color. Their guns at their hosters, the ones they had threatened her and others with when the first entered the raft, black smudges. Her cell was like the grey watercolor paints that Steve had gotten her, except the brush was too wet when she applied it to the canvas and colors seeped and blended together.
Steve.
She remembered Sam whispering to her, his breath quick and voice shaking. Her arms had been tied behind her back, her seat belts more like buckles securing her to the wall, so tight she could barely breathe.
“Steve will come back for us, just hold on tight” That’s all she could understand, she had been able to hear, over her own racing thoughts. A guard had come over a second later to break up the talking, barking about the accord’s and what not. She remembered feeling the same sensation of her powers at her fingertips, twisting, growing, burning, when she felt a pin prick on her arm and everything went dark.
That’s how she ended up here, in this blended, static cell. Her arms pinned to her sides by the navy straight jacket, the belts pulled too tight in order to stop any movement. A shock collar burned around her neck. It's a red bulb pulsing with her heartbeat.
Her neck burned and seared with pain at the slightest movement. The skin no doubt burned and was scarred underneath from the shocks. Supposedly if the collar shocked her once a minute, she wouldn’t be able to control her powers. Supposedly if they kept her in pain she couldn’t escape.
Her straight jacket had one spot that didn’t cover her skin, a rip that allowed her IV to send whatever sedatives they were pumping into her, into her system.
On top of that, she had a tube down her nose that followed through down her throat and into her stomach. Apparently she wasn’t trusted to eat like a normal person, instead a guard would come in once a day and hook the tube that flowed down her nose, to a machine. It burned her throat, but at least she was fed.
Wandanat headcannons
- Natasha is an early bird but Wanda is a sleeper, that sleeps better with Natasha there. This causes a lot of fights at four am where Wanda latches on and holds onto to Natasha, stopping Natasha from leaving the bed to do her morning training.
- Once Natasha just stood up with Wanda clinging on to her like a koala and walked to the training room. She then dropped Wanda on one of the training maps and Wanda just glared at her before returning to bed.
- Natasha doesn’t know how to cook. Not a thing they taught in the red room. On the other hand Wanda loves to cook and bake and commonly makes the group dinners, with the help of Clint, Sam, and Bruce, as they are the only avengers that know how to cook.
- Natasha loves when Wanda makes mini apple pies.
- Wanda loves to bake treats for Natasha. When she found out that Natasha commonly skips breakfast, Wanda scurried the internet on quick breakfast, and found a recipe for a granola bar. So she went ahead to make an apple oatmeal bar that she adds all the nutrients needed for a good breakfast, courtesy to banners lab. Natasha loves them since there quick but they do the job. Wanda makes sure Natasha has a few before a long mission.
- Natasha sometimes feels like she doesn’t deserve Wanda. She feels like Wanda is to good for her, especially with the stuff that Wanda goes out of her way to do.
- Due to Wandas ability to read minds, she notices when Natasha goes into those thoughts and always reassure’s her that it’s not true. They normally cuddle.
- Wanda isn’t cleared for long missions, unlike Natasha. But when Wanda goes on a longer one(in her terms, these are normally a few days at most) Natasha turns into a worried girlfriend. She waits by the message boards hoping to be able to respond to any of Wandas messages in fear that it’s an emergency, she thinks up the worse case scenario, and she normally waits up wanting to be there when Wanda comes home in case Wanda has a reaction to her mission or is hurt, just so Nat can be a good girlfriend and help her calm down or help patch her up.
- When Natasha goes on any mission, as hers aren’t given a certain estimate of time, some being a month long, Wanda just becomes overly anxious. Wanda is constantly worried she’ll lose Natasha like she lost Pietro, and when Natasha’s on missions, the worry increases. She has trouble sleeping and can’t concentrate. Clint normally offers to take Wanda to the farm, a way to get her mind off things, but Wanda politely declines so she can be at the compound when Natasha comes back. Every few days she bakes something new so Natasha will have something good to eat when she comes back, and towards the predicted end of the mission, she’ll start sleeping on the couch near the compounds main room door so when Natasha comes back she can wake her up and they can catch up.
- Natasha kisses Wanda’s hands a lot because Wanda is afraid she’ll hurt people with them, Natasha kisses them to remind her that they are beautiful just like her
- Natasha’s an atheist, but supportive of her jewish girlfriend. She celebrates Hanukkah, Shabbat, Yom Kippur, anything that Wanda does. When they first started dating Natasha was worried it would be offensive to ask questions so she did research on the side to learn all that she could bout Judaism, to help Wanda feel comfortable. When Wanda found out she told Natasha she could have literally just asked her.
- On top of that, Natasha knew basic Romani, but when she became friends with Wanda(Wanda is Romani. She is not white), she refreshed her knowledge and got better so she and Wanda could have secret conversations.
- Wanda on the other hand learned Russian, so they talk shit about everyone in a mix of the two languages.
- In conclusion they love each other and worry about each other.
How Natasha and Wanda became friends [and maybe more..]
- To preface, after age of Ultron the team, while accepting of Wanda, the team were apprehensive of her. Given the whole mind bending and losing of her brother. She also wasn’t in a good spot mentally and ended up locking herself in her room, only opening the door to take the plates of food that the avengers(mostly Nat, Steve, and Clint) were leaving her.
- So Natasha hadn’t expected to see much of Wanda, especially not in the dead of night, peering over a now very much wide awake Natasha.
- Given Wandas living conditions when she was a young girl in Sokovia, it safe to say she was sharing a bed with either Pietro or her parents, then living on the streets, she would have been with her brother. All of this is to say Wanda would be very used to having someone in her bed when she went to sleep. Now she had no one.
- Wanda, eye bags, tear stains and all, just asked Natasha simply if she could sleep with her. And Natasha to shocked to say anything but, “sure”, moved over and let Wanda get under the covers.
- Surprisingly, to Natasha, Wanda feel fast asleep. And the next morning, Natasha woke to her and Wanda curled up next to each other. She slowly slipped out, because Natasha is an early bird who likes to train before dawn, but she did wrap Wanda back up in covers, before sneaking away.
- When Natasha came back, she brought a plate of waffles that Steve had miraculously made somehow that morning, in hopes of talking to Wanda, but she wasn’t there.
- So Natasha went to Wandas door, plate of waffles in hand, and knocked asking to be let in.
- And miraculously, she was.
- Wanda, actually looking rested for once, let Natasha in and toke the plate of waffles from her. And the two just sat in quiet for awhile. Neither speaking, waiting for the other. But neither said anything, so eventually around lunch, Natasha got up, touched Wandas shoulder and left.
- And this repeated for the next month, Wanda coming to Natasha’s room at night, and Natasha coming to Wanda’s room at day, always silent.
- Until Wanda spoke one day, and asked if Natasha had a sibling. And Natasha said, yes. And before long Wanda was crying and Natasha was tearing up, and the two held each other and talked of Pietro and Yelena.
- After that the two started talking, and Natasha convinced Wanda to leave her room for lunch one day, and another she got her down to the training room, and another she sat through an entire season of “I love Lucy” just because she liked to see the brunette smile, and another she got Wanda to go outside and take a short walk, and another she was able to get Wanda stay out of her room for the entire day, and another they made dinner together, and another she, and Clint took Wanda to get a cat.
- In the beginning Natasha thought of Wanda as a target, not a violent one, but one she had to get back on there feet. But in the end they ended up as friends. Wanda gravitating to Natasha over any of the other boys at the compound.
- And soon it got to the point that the two wondered if they were more.
