Weinstein Co. Nabs TV Rights to Helena Bonham Carter’s ‘Love, Nina’
The Weinstein Co. has acquired U.S., Canadian, Chinese and Hong Kong rights to “Love, Nina,” the upcoming British television miniseries that stars Helena Bonham Carter and is based on Nina Stibbe’s memoir of the same name.
The See-Saw Films produced project, which began shooting earlier this month in London, is directed by S.J. Clarkson (“Jessica Jones,” “Orange is the New Black”) and adapted by author and Oscar-nominated screenwriter Nick Hornby.
“This is an extraordinary acquisition for our television team and TWC as a whole. It’s hard to go wrong with a group that has the genius and original minds of Nick Hornby and S.J. Clarkson, not to mention with incredible talent like Helena and this incredible cast,” TWC co-chairman Harvey Weinstein said in a press releases. “My wife and older daughters adored Nina’s novel and it’s a huge coup for us at TWC to introduce it to TV audiences. We’re also thrilled to be reuniting with Iain Canning, Emile Sherman and the entire See-Saw team whom we’ve continued to grow a very special relationship with ever since ‘The King’s Speech.'”
“Love, Nina,” which also stars Faye Marsay (“Game of Thrones”), Jason Watkins (“Trollied”) and Joshua McGuire (“Mr. Turner”), is set in 1982 and follows a young, 20-something’s letters home about her work as a nanny.
“Nina Stibbe’s book ‘Love, Nina’ has already established itself as a much-loved piece of comic writing and I love it,” Hornby said. “Her observations and worldview were the inspiration for a show that we think captures the same spirit. It’s been a joy to write and we’re thrilled with the quality of our cast.”
The deal was negotiated by Robert Walak, Yazdi and Michal Podell Steinberg on behalf of TWC with Hakan Kousetta and Jamie Laurenson negotiating on behalf of See-Saw and represented by Charles Dawson of Lee & Thompson.
This is the third major acquisition for TWC’s TV department for September, as it recently nabbed teh Icelandic crime series “Trapped” from RVK Studios and Dynamic Television and the primetime miniseries “Dr. Thorne” from Hat Trick International.
“Love, Nina” will be broadcast on the BBC in the U.K. - VARIETY
