Fr Donald Calloway: surfing, hunting, drugs and a "divine 2x4".
I have many protestant friends who don't listen to regular music and only listen to christian music because they are not allowed. Although, I see their point because some artist sing about sin.. sin that Jesus died for, I don't think all music is bad. And I don't feel influenced by regular music. How bad is it to listen to music?
It's true! Jesus died to take away our sins. The problem is when songs glorify sinful behavior or incite others to it, painting it as something it's not.
If songs about sex ended with a line about how somebody got infected with something and ended up pregnant and desperate, or if songs about drinking ended up with a car wrapped around a tree, or if songs about drugs ended up with a suicide,... it wouldn't be too attractive, right? Most of the time, though, it's treated as if there are no consequences, nobody gets offended, God doesn't care, etc.
Music isn't exactly going "in one ear and out the other." We may not recognize its effect because it's slow and steady. But definitely it has its effects. "You are what you eat"... and you begin to think according to what you listen to. So choose wisely what you put into your brain! That's all. Music in itself isn't bad. But certain lyrics can do us damage.
God bless you!
