Charlemagne looks like a fusion of Galahad and Gudao

this is one of the strongest moments in link for me because it’s charlie breaking the illusion of his own existence. until now he’s been enthusiastic and silly with the occasional serious beat but no matter what he’s been the kind of knight who is an undeniably good guy who beats up undeniably bad guys, and he is the one who tells hakuno that it wasn’t like that in reality. it’s not something he’s proud of but he won’t hide or deny it either because it’s the reason he dreamt of being such a straightforwardly good guy in the first place, and he wants hakuno to understand that part of him

Cute and Valid things about Fate Charlemange:

-Immediately disregards rules about revealing True Names, and then asks you to call him Charlie.

-Calls everyone by their proper titles but in a way that makes it seem like he's their best friend and not like he's deferring to them

-Example: "Sir Robin," and "Big Sis Tamamo" but he also calls Nero "Senpai" which is fucking hilarious

-Everything about his relationship with Astolfo is good and wholesome

-Geeks out when meeting other famous knights

karl keeps yelling that charlie is just a fanciful dream while he’s the charlemagne of reality but karl isn’t real either. the charlemagne that lived the dream that charlie represents did not exist but neither did the charlemagne that doesn’t hold that dream. even if he were capable of assimilating all of se.ra.ph his rule was doomed from the start, because his existence is one that doesn’t allow for dreaming beyond your means but he can’t bring himself to actually dismiss any of those dreams. before charlie even meets hakuno he’d already met karl, and karl decided to just toss charlie out instead of killing him. when elizabeth resists oraclization on pure resolve to not repeat her past karl says he shouldn’t have tried to brainwash her in the first place because it’d be wrong to crush her dream like that. even his desire to save the world by becoming the world is an impossible dream born from wanting a single girl to not have to be afraid, one he ironically tried to discard in order to achieve it. 

charlie and karl are the exact same existence as far as the throne is concerned, charlemagne cannot exist without the dreams that spawned his legends. karl as he exists in link is rooted in the historical charlemagne’s rule but his looks, his behaviour, his noble phantasms, even his goal are far, far more unrealistic than those of charlie because his existence is far more impossible than charlie’s. charlemagne’s dream was real even if it went unfulfilled, the charlemagne without that dream however never existed until now and thus looks more fake than the one actually designated as a fake. that is also why he tramples dreams while unable to crush dreams, why he scorns fantasy while full aware that the form he takes now is a fantasy in itself, why altera supports and pities him. charlemagne is an unbelievably kind man whose steel heart bleeds for those he kills, whose very nature as someone who dreamt of better is at odds with karl’s state of existence. karl cannot exist the way he does, even so still exists the way he does, and for as long as he exists he wants to live true to the contradictory mess he is.
