archer impaled by swords, which are a symbol of shirou’s identity, justice, and ideals, fucking crushes me every time because what you’re seeing is the image of archer being not just hurt but punished by his ideals. he’s being stabbed in the back by swords as both a literal and metaphorical picture of how his own convictions betrayed him, and how he must now carry the weight of his beliefs just as he must bear the weight of his sins.

throughout the vn there are several shots of archer’s back, particularly shots seen from shirou’s perspective. that represents archer being something shirou must catch up to and surpass because of how experienced archer seems in comparison to shirou and because of how much archer challenges shirou’s immaturity. if shirou is to prove archer wrong then he must stand not just right beside him but right in front of him and win in a test of prowess and conviction.

but once archer’s identity is revealed in ubw we’re exposed to what actually lies at the end of that path. there is only tragedy and anger and bitterness which causes shirou to agonize and reevaluate what he’s pursuing. shirou has to think what he will do differently from archer so that he doesn’t have to not only end up like him but more importantly not give up and lose sight of the dream that defines him as shirou emiya.

but then heaven’s feel takes this one step further. when shirou is at his utmost limit in his fight against saber, images of archer not just with his back turned but actively looking back at him bring up a different kind of message. it is archer saying “if you can do what i can do, if you can power through this pain and defeat her, then you’ll achieve something beyond what i’ve done and be not a conceptual hero but a real hero.” archer leaves something behind for shirou to grasp and propel himself forward to a path with a brighter end. through all three routes archer, despite his protests towards shirou in his entirety, has moments where he gives genuinely good, at times comforting even, advice and goes so far as to solve some of shirou’s problems. but heaven’s feel, unlike his partings in fate and ubw, is where archer truly looks like he trusts shirou beyond giving him vague ideas on what to do after archer disappears, because he gives shirou a part of his own body to use as a vehicle not to fulfill their similar goals, but for shirou to do things as an individual person despite standing for a selfishness in complete opposition to archer’s.

I'm a fan that got into Fate through Fate Zero, and tbh, so much of the rest of the franchise is so disappointing fap fodder. :/ Though I might give UBW another try if you're praising it so much.

I fucking love UBW so much. Not the movie, the movie was... eh.

Archer Emiya was a character I fell in love with pretty quickly when I first watched Fate 2006, and then, through better proxy storytelling and me looking at his character again, I fell in love with Shirou Emiya.

Please give UBW and Heavens feel another try. Ufotable does such a good job with this franchise.

I also recommend Today’s Menu for Emiya Family, because it’s a cute show wherenothinghappensandyoucanjustappreciatethesecharacterslivinghappily

I get it, Fate Stay Night started as a erotic visual novel.

and yes, majority of the fans are men, but to say or even think that “because it started this way, it needs to remain this way (i.e. catering predominantly to male fans at the expense of good story telling or good characterization)” is incredibly narrow-minded and sad but also goes against some of the best story telling we’ve seen from the Fate series.
