I hate that we only get Athena-Buck mother & son moments when something traumatic happens. Like why can’t I see them having fun together. Instead it’s all just “Bobby is trapped with a sniper, I’m gonna pull a Buck but you can’t come with me, Buck, because I can’t protect you.” and “Buck don’t die Bobby can’t lose another kid” and “haha our cruise ship is so fucked right now I bet Buck would love to be here doing this rescue.” Like??? Why is it all just angst and crazy shit??? At least with Buck and Bobby they have some domestic moments but there’s hardly any with Athena and Buck.
I really miss S1 Athena and Hen friendship. There’s not a lot of moments of them together now 😔
Ok as much as I love the “Bobby had a heart attack at the thought of Athena dying in a fire” discourse I think the moment that actually did him in was seeing his home, again, up in flames and being able to do nothing about it, again. Like the adrenaline and strain he put himself through to get out the house with Athena and then bring her back probably didn’t help but you literally just see the devastation when he’s staring at their house right before he collapses.
so how about tonight's episode huh
If Bobby does end up getting hurt I’m gonna end up needing some good Buck & Athena hurt/comfort moments!!! Like some good old mother & son relationship building because I feel like we definitely need more of that this season!!!
I know I’ve been yapping about Buck and Bobby a lot lately but I think I actually adore Buck and Athena’s relationship just a tiny bit more?? Like we already see in episode 1 that despite Buck getting fired, Bobby was very clearly fond of him. And in Bobby Begins Again we see him smiling at Buck on his first day. So their relationship already starts off with Bobby caring for Buck and thinking of him fondly. Athena, on the other hand, has a more rocky relationship with Buck. I think she begrudgingly respected him by the end of the first episode, or was at least partially there. By episode two, Buck seems to be the one who’s more hesitant towards their relationship, even seeming a bit defensive and standoffish, though that can be partially attributed to the recent trauma he went through in that episode. Still, Athena makes a point to shake Buck’s hand and agree to start over with him, and even offers him some advice to try and make him feel better.
Now part of the reason why I think this is so significant is because from what little we see of Bucks childhood, his mother was the one who would get more upset with Buck, who would yell at his most often, and who was the one who was the most distant towards him. Even though his father was probably distant as well, we still see him trying somewhat after Buck falls off his bike. So I think that while in a sense Buck needed both parental figures in his life, he needed a mother figure more. While it’s implied and hinted at that Maddie kind of filled that role as best as she could, she was still pretty young herself and wouldn’t have been able to fill that role completely. So while I think she blurs the lines between older sister and mother figure, she’s not his mother overall, but rather someone who fills that role occasionally.
So now, after Buck has spent years without a mother figure in his life, Athena meets him and they got off on the wrong foot. Buck can tell that Athena doesn’t like him and he’s not trying to do anything to persuade her to. But somehow, he worms his way into her heart and she comes to care for him (like a mother would). The fact that his birth mother couldn’t look past what she perceived as his faults, but Athena, who seemed to be disdainful after her impression of him, could look past all that and work towards loving him anyways?????
Anyways thanks for listening to my ted talk (someone please write Buck and Athena mommy issues angst for me 🙏)
Watching Bobby go camping with Harry and Michael in 3x13 after knowing about Bobby’s father is actually so soul crushing. Like his facial expressions when Michael and Harry were telling the story of what Michael’s dad said to him about the forest regrowing??? Bobby trying to bond with Harry and asking questions about his grandpa??? Bobby telling Michael that Harry can see what’s going with him and that it scares him??? That they’re all trying to support Michael because they’re scared and he’s pushing them away?? Like OH MY GOD???
The way Bobby looks devastated when Michael says “so you can learn to be a family when I’m gone” because he cares about Michael and he doesn’t want May and Harry to lose their father??? Also Athena saying “I didn’t think I’d have to prepare Harry for the possibility that he might have to lose his father at 10 years old” compared to Bobby having to handle taking care of his father and not being prepared for the reality of it but still trying his best because his mom and brother left???? Athena and May being a parallel to Bobby’s mom and brother by being upset with the way he’s behaving and trying to get him to realize how serious this is, trying to get him to get surgery, like how Bobby’s mom and brother were fed up with his father and tried to get him to get help and eventually gave up on him. Also the way when Michael tells Bobby how his dad died and Bobby looks so vulnerable and hesitates before saying “must’ve been a hard time” like????
And Bobby’s face when Michael says “All I could think about is how my son would never meet my father. Never meet the man who made me who I am.” but he means it in a positive way because Michael’s father was good. But Bobby’s father shaped Bobby in a negative way with the alcoholism and stuff. Like the way Michael is trying so hard to keep his father alive for Harry and then asking Bobby to do keep him alive for Harry if he passes away, and the way Bobby immediately and earnestly agrees. Bobby trying hard to help and preserve the memory of a father as he has to watch him fade away slowly.
I NEEEEEEEEED like a thousand more fics that touch on Bobby’s daddy issues and his friendship with Michael immediately!!!!
While I do like the theories that Amir will likely seek revenge by going after Buck or the 118 as a whole, it looks like the person that Amir lost was his romantic partner so I think it’s also plausible that he goes after Athena. OR since we know that one of the main reasons Bobby didn’t get fired after he was under investigation for what happened was because of how the public viewed him when he handled the whole situation with Freddie, Amir might be going more for a character assassination that might persuade the public to turn on Bobby??? Though I doubt that’s likely considering the BTS photos they’ve posted?? I’m also curious as to see how Bobby’s childhood really fits into all of this??? Did something bad happen to Bobby as a child??? Were his parents bad parents???
If Bobby does end up getting hurt I’m gonna end up needing some good Buck & Athena hurt/comfort moments!!! Like some good old mother & son relationship building because I feel like we definitely need more of that this season!!!
