Hunter Dad

Been thinking a lot about how I wanna write Cayde as a dad figure for Diana. I kinda seeing him as this hot mess dad who encourages her to get into a lot of trouble for "experience" but certain kinds of trouble he wants her to avoid like the plauge.

Blow up enemies? He'll sneak you some fireworks to make it aesthetic "that's what you guys say now right?"

Travel the solar system? Just call when you touch ground and if you find any loot.

Pranks? He'll join you.

But one day, when finding old caches of his--Diana comes across a worn book. She's reading it as she approaches.

"Cayde?"

"mmhmm?"

"where'd you get this book?"

"show me the cover."

Diana turns the book, marking her place with her finger to show the cover art. A hunter wrapped in a Cloak of red is clutching a teary eyed human warlock to their chest, golden gun sparkling in the hunters free hand. Cayde almost reboots on the spot.

"DON'T READ THAT!"

He grabs for her but she's already gone. Over his head, off the metal scaffolding and into the network of pipes that is her hidey hole. Cayde shouts at her until she pokes her head into view

"This isn't funny Hunter! Stuff like that ain't made for kids--keep your innocence while you can!" He tells her, waving his hand as a signal to give up the book. Her faceplates shift to resemble a lifted brow and stoic blankface. 'Who said I was innocent' the look said.

Cayde gasped long and deep, his mouth opening as Diana began snickering and slipped back into the dark.

////////////

On Io, Diana has been helping Asher Mir with his experiments. He's made some sort of goober that might help understand the Vex. It's all Cabalish to Diana, but when she sees it sparking she grabs Asher and pulls him away from it just as it explodes, sending them tumbling over the hill Asher had built it on.

When they land, Diana is pressed against a rock with Asher on top of her, having becomed tangled in her cloak and his robes. Just as Cayde asks Sun Dance to patch into Joel's feed.

"Asher!" Diana's voice crackles at first as the connection strengthens.

Incoherent babbling by Asher can be heard as Cayde swaps his coffee cup to the other hand.

"Ash-er!" Diana can be heard grunting, "Get off!"

"what?" The gynsom scribe snaps back

"come--wait, right there just--ugh I'll do it myself."

Cayde drops his cup, and Ikora covers her mouth--not because of what's being said over the coms, but the pure horror on Cayde's face.

"Cayde?" She tries hard but a warm chuckle escapes her as--without changing his expression, Cayde begins to leave, "where are you going?"

"First Io. Then prison!" Cayde snaps as he disappears around a corner.

I didn't expect people to care so I hadn't written much of it (legit it's just the opening to Diana's story rn) but it's called Lady Luck, rn it's on Wattpad and I'm gonna edit it and upload it to A03 under the same name 😅

this is like just a fourth of a whole musical medley addressing that you can’t live like the simpsons anymore. harsh :(

I've been off trying to live and have nothing much to show for it 🙃

I have, however, been working on a novel. Think DSMP meets Attack on titan with God of War elements.

It's heavily influenced by the romanticized thought of running into the woods and starting a society free of the modern government in an attempt to reclaim self worth, power and peace of mind. However, I'm totally aware of the Romanticism of it and how it would inevitably fail because of human nature and the desire for power or "more".

Humans have huddled behind walls, submitting to their government for protection against wild beasts and other humans. Over time it becomes a sort of twisted metropolis and a group of fed up civilians and soldiers decide to book it when one of the walls is damaged.

They run until they can't see their wall anymore and decide to make a settlement. It follows their attempt at forming a society and trying to survive without modern conveniences. They have children who grow up with only horror stories of what modern living is like, until a roaming band of deserters like themselves shows up st the outskirts of the settlement and a fight breaks out, the homestead destroyed.

Teenagers are left to care for children and only a few elderly survived the attack. They move on to find a new place to settle and end up near the ruins of the ancient civilization. Then their powers begin manifesting. And an ancient threat descends a mythical mountain to keep a promise made at the dawn of time.

Without a doubt a series, still first draft level

Creating a character

Creating characters is one of the most important things to do while writing. Characters can make or break a story. No matter how good the idea, if the characters are flat, people are not going to keep reading. Here are some posts to help you create interesting and memorable characters.

actually @ every fanfiction writer whether you wrote something that got thousands of reblogs and comments and became a staple in your fandom, or you wrote one fic and deleted it, or you write mutilchaptered fics that never get a final update, or write short fics, or long fics, or used to write and now you don’t, or you deleted/orphaned your works, or you only share with friends:

thank you.

sharing your writing is hard. and sometimes it’s thankless. sometimes it’s such a negative experience that I wonder how anyone does it at all. but you are needed; you are wanted. whether or not we properly acknowledge it, you are a vital part of fandom culture. thanks for sharing.

Writer's Guide: Guns

I'm not the biggest fan of guns but I need them in my new WIP. Guns are probably one of the most used tools within most medias, besides being one of the most misused tools. So how can we write them? (my other post on guns focuses on the damage guns can do to a body so go there if that's what your looking for)

Part of a Gun

  • Action: The action is the brain of the gun. It is the part where you load, fire and eject the casings.
  • Stock: The stock is the handle of the gun. It is made up of the butt and the fore-end.
  • Barrel: The Barrel is the nose of the gun, the point where the bullets are fired from. Once a bullet is fired, it travels through the barrel and out the muzzle.
  • Muzzle: the muzzle is the hole the bullet exit from.
  • Bore: The bore is the inside of the barrel
  • Cylinder: The Cylinder holds the rounds in a revolver. It rotates as the gun is fired, pumping bullets into the chamber.
  • Grip: The Grip is where you hold gun.
  • Hammer: The Hammer on a revolver is a pin like instrument that strikes the primer which fires the bullet from the gun.
  • Clip: An clip stores the rounds of ammunition on a single line-like device that can be placed into magazine.
  • Magazine: The Magazine is a container that is spring activated, which can be detachable of fixed. It holds cartridges for a repeating firearm.
  • Trigger: The Trigger is what you pull yo fire the gun
  • Trigger Guard: The trigger guard is the loop that fits in front of the trigger to shield it from accidental firing.

Ammunition

  • Bullet: is the projectile that exits the gun.
  • Cartridges/Shell: This is the case, primer, propellant and projectile (bullet). The bullet sits in the cartridge case.
  • Shotshell: Are rounds of shotgun ammunition, containing pellets rather than a bullet.

Gun Safety

1. Keep the muzzle pointed downwards (not near your feet or others) when not using the gun.

2. Unload gun when not in use

3. Always check the safety.

4. Be sure of your aim. Don't fire blindly because you'll end up wasting bullets and you might hurt somebody

5. If the gun is jammed, don't look down the barrel to see why it's blocked. Point it away from you, open the action and remove the blockage safely.

6. Keep your barrel clean. Any excess cleaning fluid even dirt can mess up your shot or even cause blockages that can burst the barrel

7. Don't alter your gun in any way on your own. Even if you're a self proclaimed expert, don't touch the gun. You can fuck up the intergrity of the weapon.

How to Hold a Handgun

1. Your dominant hand should grip the gun, high along the back strap (back of grip). This will give you better leverage and handle the recoil better.

2. Place your other hand against the other side of the grip. Four fingers should sit snugly under the trigger, while your index finger should rest against the trigger itself.

How to Hande a Rifle/Long barrelled Gun

  1. Hold the rifle with two hands, hold the grip of the rifle with your dominant hand. Your fingers should wrap about the base of the rifle, under the trigger guard.
  2. Your non-dominant hand should be wrapped firmly around the base of the grip. Holding the gun right will help reduce recoil and ensure better control.

How to fire a Gun

  1. Align your sights. Your gun has a sight at the front and at the rear. Aim and align your sights through these points. There should be equal space between the sights.
  2. Set your sight. When you’re aiming a gun, you’re you are looking through the front sight, the rear sight, and your target. When you're aiming at the target, it will look blurry. The sights should but clear.
  3. Press rather than pull the trigger. You should squeeze it, applying constant pressure until the weapon fires.

Things every Writer should know about Guns

  • Hollow Point Bullets are not more deadly than full metal jacket bullets. Though a hollow point will cause damage, full metal bullets are actually more likely to over-penetrate and move when with the flesh, causing a more devastating wound.
  • Guns are really loud. How loud exactly? Most heavy duty guns could cause hearing loss. It simply isn't possible for two characters to have a lovely chat while firing weapons.
  • Rifles with scopes make it easier to shoot but they won't make a beginner a sudden genius marksman. Scopes help but they don't perform miracles.
  • Shotguns shoot shells not bullets.
  • Your character should not tuck a just fired handgun into their waistband or else they will get a nasty burn.
  • Silencers or better yet, suppressors do not silence your shots. They actually lower the sound by a few decibels.
  • Don't have your character fire gun sideways. They will fuck up their wrist and look stupid while doing it.
  • Most rifles and shotguns aren't pump action
  • If you drop your gun, if won't fire itself.
  • The clip and magazine are two different things. They can't be used as synonyms.
  • When somebody is shot, they don't go flying back. They crumple on the spot.
  • The exit wound of a bullet is larger than the entry point.
  • Most beginners will have trouble with recoil. Bloody noses and black eyes are common is one doesn't know what their doing.

Give me female John Wick or give me death.

Nay, trans girl Joanna Wick specifically.

Yes! But also have you ever seen the movie Holes

No, I googled it and I got something about an adventure comedy film with kids and I’m very confused

Ok so that’s the main story but basically this is one of the best parts. I’ll tell the story chronologically:

150 years ago, in a Texas town called Green Lake, there lived a teacher named Kate Barlow. She was in love with the only Black man in town, Sam, who was a handyman and sold onions from a secret water source on top of a mountain that looks like a thumb. They couldn’t admit their love for each other, because everyone else was racist, but every day she’d come up with a reason for him to stick around the schoolhouse after the kids left. She’d say “oh the roof is leaking” or “this picture is crooked, can you rehang it” and he’d say, “I can fix that”. Think along the lines of “as you wish” from the Princess Bride but they aren’t mean to each other.

Finally, one day, instead of Kate paying Sam with peach preserves, they kiss, and the creep who has a crush on Kate sees it, kills Sam and his donkey, and burns down the schoolhouse, ruining the town’s educational oppurtunities. Kate then leaves town, heartbroken. She comes back and murders the creep and the friends who helped with the lynching, giving them all a kiss after their dead. She becomes the infamous outlaw, Kissin’ Kate Barlow, who robs men and only kisses them once they’re dead.

THATS THE END OF THE RELEVENT INFO ABOUT HOLES - if you want to know more, keep reading. Lots of spoilers.

Cut to a village in Latvia - a young, sad, poor man named Elya Yelnats desperately wants to marry the dumb blonde in the village. She is set to marry the old town butcher, in exchange for her dad getting a fat pig. Elya goes to the local Roma woman, named Madame Zeroni, to get magic help on raising a super fat pig, to beat the butchers pig, and win the blonde in marriage. He only has a year to do it.

She teaches him to carry a piglet up a special mountain, have the piglet (she just gave him the runt of the litter) drink from a special stream, and he has to sing to the piglet, to make it grow fat and strong. In exchange for the pig and the advice, Elya has to carry the ancient Madame Zeroni up the mountain and do the ritual with her, so she can grow young and strong again. She tells him it would probably just be a better rides to go to American and get a fortune, but he thinks he’s in love with the blonde. So they shake on it. Madame Zeroni promises to curse him if he doesn’t follow through on his end of the deal.

Meanwhile, Elya grows strong, and more confident in himself. However, on the day he and the butcher are supposed to weigh their pigs, the pigs are the exact same weight. So they ask the dumb blonde who she wants to marry, and despite Elya obviously being the better, nicer choice, she acts indecisively. Disgusted, he totally forgets his promise and leaves town to go to America. Madame Zeroni then sets a curse bad luck on him and his line.

Elya starts a family, and he has a lot of bad luck. However, his son, *Stanley, has some good luck for awhile and has a whole trunk of treasure. Unfortunately, while traveling through Texas, Kissin’ Kate Barlow robs him. Stanley the First is the only man she ever left alive, because he didn’t deserve to die. He stumbles across Sam the onion-farmer’s old water source and survives.

A decade or so after that, Kissin’ Kate Barlow comes back to Green Lake, to find that the lake had dried up because now rain had fallen since that terrible night, the extremely venomous yellow-spotted lizards had started swarming the area, and her former students were all miserable people who wanted to take her money, blaming their misfortune on Kate and Sam. She tells them that she buried her treasure somewhere in the dried up Lake bed, and that they could dig for a hundred years and never find it. She dies laughing.

Sometime between the 1800s and the late 1990s/early 2000s, the Zeroni family migrated to America and also fall upon hard times.

Cut to ‘modern’ day. Stanley IV loves with his family in a small apartment with his family. His Dad, who is obsessed with inventing a cure to stinky feet, makes the whole place smell like old sneakers. One day, while Stanley is walking home from school when a pair of stolen shoes that were meant to be sold for charity (a celebrity athlete wore them) hit him on the head. He is arrested for stealing the shoes, and is sent to Camp Green Lake, a juvenile detention facility. There, he and a bunch of other boys have to dig a 6x6 foot (6feet = 2 meters) hole every day, and are supposed to tell ‘the Warden’ if they find anything interesting. There are a bunch of boys with interesting nicknames - one named Armpit actually got a spin-off book which was interesting - but the most interesting kid is a young boy named Zero.

Zero can dig twice as fast as the other kids, and was only arrested because he’s a homeless orphan. Stanley offers to help him learn how to read in exchange for help with digging his hole. The other kids are like “hey that’s kind of racist, a white boy having a Black kid dig his hole” but Zero learns to read really quickly, and the issue is kind of brushed over. Finally, one day, Stanley uncovers an old lipstick tube that was Kate’s, and the Warden (who was the granddaughter of the students who watched Kate die) and her really weird lackeys get super excited and they all excavate the hell out of the area where the lipstick tube was supposedly found.

(Stanley lied about which hole it was from because when they find something ‘interesting’ [the warden never tells the kids what they’re looking for] they get extra long showers and the rest of the day off. So he figured if he had more to ‘discover’ later, he could get more breaks later)

Eventually, they give up on the false area, and the warden and her cronies go back to bullying the kids. Zero, who was nicknamed that because one of the asshole adults (Pendanski) found out he didn’t know how to read and didn’t like talking much decided that he had ‘zero thoughts in his head’, gets bullied by Pendanski over still learning how to read, and hits Pendanski on the head with a shovel and runs off into the desert with no water.

Immediately, Zero gets replaced by another kid (who likes to Hotwire cars) immediately, and Stanley gets suspicious. He finds out that they’re just going to let Zero die out there alone (the official policy is that you can leave Camp Green Lake any time you want, but it’s the only source of water for a hundred miles, so it’s effectively fenced in) and Stanley gets angry. So he learns how to Hotwire and tries to steal the water truck to go and find Zero and bring him water. He almost immediately drives it into a hole. But still, Stanley runs after Zero.

He finds Zero, halfway up the thumb-shaped mountain, really sick from a fever and drinking old peach preserves, which smell super nice. They realize it isn’t sustainable, Stanley notices that water is flowing from the top of the mountain. They decide to go up there to find more water. He carries Zero up the mountain to find Sam’s old water source and onion farm. Stanley happens to be singing the old Zeroni song at the time. They survive and start talking about themselves and what they’d do with the Yelnats’ treasure if they found it in the lake bed. They of course agree to split it 50/50.

Stanley tells the story of how he got sent to the Camp. Zero then says that he lost his mom a couple years ago and That he’s been living on the streets since. Turns out he was the one who stole the shoes, and tossed them away once he realized they didn’t fit his feet. Since he couldn’t read, he didn’t know that they were being sold for charity when he sold them. Zero also reveals that his full name is Hector **Zeroni. I will now call him Hector.

Full of onions, peaches and water, they walk down in the middle of the night to go and find the treasure. The venomous yellow-spotted lizards, who live in the holes, don’t care about Stanley and Hector because they ate the special onions. Unfortunately, they are discovered by the adults just as they uncover the treasure chest.

They stay there all night, covered in lizards, while the adults kind of point a gun at them and kind of hope they get bitten by the lizards.

But finally, in the morning, the lawyer for Stanley’s case pulls up and says that he was actually found innocent, and that his father has discovered the cure for stinky feet, which is coincidentally a mixture made from peach preserves. She realized how terrible the camp is, and how cruelly the kids are treated, and tries to take Stanley away while leaving Hector and the treasure in the hands of the evil warden and her cronies (who turn out to be escaped criminals, ironically.). However, he and Hector prove that the treasure belongs to Stanley because the ownership papers are in his name (because his great grandfather had the same name) and also makes sure that Hector gets rescued from being murdered.

Since a Yelnats carried a Zeroni up the mountain, healed him and sang the special song, the curse is broken. And since the treasure was returned to the right people and justice was kind of served, the curse that Kissin’ Kate Barlow put on Green Lake is lifted too. It finally rains on the old lake.

All the kids get lighter sentences and/or are set free, Hector and Stanley have a lot of money, and Bector finds his Mom. The adults get arrested. The End

*the joke is that Stanley is Yelnats backwards, so all the Yelnats after Elya are named Stanley. The main character of the book and movie is Stanley IV.

**Zero is Black and Roma, but you wouldn’t know about the Roma part without knowing his backstory.

I forgot about the onions. 🤣

Thanks for tagging me. I should find this movie again.

Iirc Stanley is like one of two or three white kids at the camp. One of other kids was arrested for selling “tiny bags of Oregeno” and after they’re all freed the camp is turned into a summer camp for girls.

That’s right! Thanks for the reminder

# WHAT THE FUCK DID I JUST READ # I THOUGHT THIS IMAGE WAS FROM A GENERIC WESTERN ROMANCE MOVIE

Are you telling me you’ve never seen Holes, or read the book it was based on? Is this what you are telling me?

I’ve both seen the movie and read the book and honestly it was one of the most accurate book-to-film adaptations I’ve encountered. I fuckin’ love Kissin’ Kate. Fuckin’ badass lady.

Also I love how Hector got a happy ending ‘cause poor kid deserved it. Precious child.

This post is the first time I’ve ever even heard of it.

Holes is the book you get to read in jr high if your not-honors English teacher hates Cather In The Rye and knows if they want to assign a book to non-honors students the book needs to be actually good. another good one in that category is Rule Of The Bone, which is about a homeless crust punk having adventures.

I actually have a wip like this. Female vamp is mourning the loss of her pure sunshine (pun intended) husband killed by a vamp hunter and her only goal in life now it to watch his world alowly burn around him

Hi!

Maybe your seeing one of my posts for the first time or maybe you follow me and like what crazy shit I put out on this hellsite, either way---I have something I wanna share!

I've got a good friend and she wrote a book! Idk if she's got a Tumblr but I know how much the side of Tumblr I mess with loves literature and writing! So I'mma post links to her stuff here!

I devoured Malediction, I actually had to force myself to put down the book so I could keep enjoying it longer--i don't like to rush book reading and the best part? She's already working on book 2 of the series!

Do you like witches? Found families? Know the pain of having abusive families / "odd" living arrangements? Like to see assholes get what's coming to them? Scarlett's story might just be for you!
