Ohhhhhh my god I’m so glad I got to flip the Keystone Motel post on its head.  Oh, that is satisfying.  The moment I realized what was going to happen to Garnet at the end of A Single Pale Rose I started praying I’d have the material for that post.

So!  Let’s talk about relationships!

This is actually a pretty reasonable reaction, all things considered!

Let’s go down the tally:

–Garnet’s best friend lied to her for almost six thousand years about something Real Goddamn Important

–Garnet’s best friend’s lie was about being her most hated enemy

–Garnet’s best friend, who she trusted implicitly, imparted two great lessons: A Gem can be anything she wants, she is free and You are free to be you, together!  Don’t ever question that

–Garnet’s best friend, who lied to her about something at the very core of their lives for six t h o u s a n d years, has now been exposed as a liar, and now all of the other Important Things she said are being called into question

So, now, we have Sapphire (who prides herself on seeing what’s coming) flying into a rage, questioning every truth she’s held close to her heart–which includes her relationship with Ruby.

So she freaked out, and peaced out, and is, presumably, taking some time to bawl her eye out and re-center.  That’s gonna take a while!  This is some earth-shattering stuff right here!  Questioning what brought them together has, uh…

…tripped up even the most stable and loving of relationships.

Here’s some reminders, though:

Healthy relationships have conflict.

Healthy relationships can survive being strained.

Questioning something, taking a deep look at it, laying it bare, is the best way to make it stronger if it’s worth keeping going.  Works for beliefs, works for relationships.

Ruby and Sapphire found each other and grew to know and love each other before Rose ever gave her blessing to Garnet.  That love is real, and strong, and has survived everything that’s been thrown at it.  It’ll survive this.

Rose Quartz was a liar, yes.  Rose Quartz told some pretty tall tales in her time.  But she didn’t tell this tale, girls…you did.

And I don’t think you want to end it just yet.

“…Sapphire…?”

“NO!  I’M FUCKING DONE!  I’M FUCKING DONE!”

“THIS IS BULLSHIT!”  THIS IS FUCKING BULLSHIT!”

“WHAT IS THIS? WHAT IS THIS?  WHAT IS MY LIFE!?”

“I can’t do it, Ruby.”

“…Well, I’ll tell you what, Sapphire.  You can give up now, or you can figure it out, because I certainly can’t do it without you, and I know you can’t do it without me.”

“…I APPRECIATE THAT!”

“But look what we’re dealing with, Ruby!”

“Sapphy…”

“You’ve got to draw the line somewhere!”

“…Sapphy…”

“You’ve got to draw a fucking line in the sand, Ruby!”

“Sapphire!”

“You’ve got to make a statement!  You’ve got to look inside yourself and say, ‘What am I willing to put up with today?’“

“NOT FUCKING THIS”

I was sent this screenshot in response to my “why don’t people like this” question, and I wanted to respond on here.

(I’m a liveblogger who’s only seen up to A Single Pale Rose, so please avoid spoilery responses if any of this has been addressed in episodes beyond that already)

Rose was not evil.  Rose was, initially, selfish and irresponsible, but was still trying to do something good for people–hers or not.  The war was still necessary, still righteous; whether she truly believed in the message of freedom and kindness and love or not at the start of the war, that message was still truth, and it inspired her people to try to throw off their shackles.  That matters, even if they failed due to completely unforeseeable events.

This reveal was always the plan, was always foreshadowed, was always in the DNA of the show, was always going to happen.  Everything you’ve seen leading up to this supports it.  It doesn’t change anything about the theme, even the theme of healing from the war.

Sometimes, a person will break a bone.  Sometimes that bone heals incorrectly and needs to be fixed because it’s seriously impacting that person’s quality of life.  Sometimes that person will go in for surgery to correct the way the bone healed.

When that happens, the very first things the doctors do is re-break the bone.

Midpoint Character Analysis: Rose Quartz

(aka I banged a rock star and that’s awesome)

(Disclaimer:  I am a liveblog!  I’ve seen up through episode 34, Watermelon Steven, and all analysis and assertions made herein are based upon such information as I have received to this point.  Please don’t spoil me about future events in the reblogs!)

Something is seriously wrong here.

Rose Quartz is Steven’s absent mother, who gave up her corporeal form in order to give Steven life via her gem.  Part of her still lives in Steven’s belly button; the symbolism of that being the remains of the umbilical cord in humans is not lost on me.  Those who knew Rose speak highly of her; Garnet and Amethyst respected her, Pearl and Greg loved her.

Please forgive me for the joke I made in the title, there; there are only two bits of information we know about her.  One is that she had a baby with Greg Universe, and it’s easy to call back to the joke I made in his character analysis.

The other is that none of the things we’re told about Rose Quartz by the characters match what we’re told about Rose Quartz by the imagery associated with her.

Everything Steven encounters about his mother, from her pets to her monuments to her shrines to her offensive powers, turns sinister.  Everything he sees about her tries to hurt him.  Everything about her that we’re told is sweetness and joy and life, but everything about her that we see is darkness and danger and death.

I’m a storyteller.  I’ve spent most of my life since I was a small child reading and dissecting stories in many forms, and I’ve learned a lot about the things writers try to tell us without words.  Everything about Rose Quartz is setting off warning bells in my head; the writers are using symbolism and imagery to send us a message about her, and that message is

DO.

NOT.

TRUST.

ROSE.

QUARTZ.
