FERDINAND CELS

Ferdinand The Bull was a Disney’s short film from 1938 produced at the studio at the hight of its golden age of animation.

A few fun facts? The bull's mother was voiced by Walt Disney. Milt animated this character. Also, Walt recognized himself being caricatured as the film’s matador, but animator Ward Kimball denied this. I need to find some sketches of this matador!

Picture Post, magazine article from March 23, 1946

You see Kimball working on the section called The Whale Who Wanted to Sing at the Met, and to his eft hangs an early model sheet of the Siamese Cats from Lady and the Tramp, a film that wouldn't be in theaters until almost a decade later. Ollie Johnston is credited as Disney's top animator, while Milt Kahl, in the last image, doesn't get mentioned at all.

DISNEY'S NINE OLD MEN

Had to take the time to create an ode to these nine incredible men who were there when it all started. It was tough to find autographs of some of them though.

Which one is your personal favorite? Personally I can't choose only one, but some stand out more for me. How about you guys?

Legends of Disney Animation through time...

Each of these amazing animators joined the Walt Disney Animation team to bring us those treasures we cherish as memories and magic. Just figured out that 1934 was THE year to be hired by the studios!

They are the most talented, which one is your favorite?

Ward Kimball's Captain Hooks

Captain Hook was a character animated by Frank Thomas and also Woolie Reitherman, so it is very interesting to see why Ward was doodling around on his own twists on this Peter Pan character, while he was responsible for the Indian Chief and the lost boys.

What's interesting in these concepts is that they were caricatures of some of his fellow animators posing as Captain Hook (including himself)!

First there is Frank Thomas, followed by Ward, then Milt Kahl as a cranky Hook, Marc Davis as a very stylish Hook, Clarke Mallery as an elegant Hook and Ollie Johnston as a very comical Hook.

These are pure gold.

Four Mouseketeers

Some disney animation legends would have turned 100 this Halloween, like Frank Thomas, Chuck Jones and Ollie Johnston. Ward Kimball and Marc Davis would have followed them in 2014.

Here there's a picture of Marc, Ollie, Frank and Ward. This Disney Magazine photo shoot took place in 1997 in LA, at Tam O'Shanter restaurant, one of Walt's favorite restaurant, where he used to have a reserved table, that is still there today. Next time I go to visit LA, I have to stop at the Tam and sit at his table.
